I liked reading the comments and the video. I think I will follow this advice, while at the begging is a good idea to sound like others to learn how to use the tools, at some point we need to break from everything we've learned and create our own sound. So what I take from this is to not be afraid to be authentic. In the industry they are afraid to be different, they repeat the same formulas that already sold not to risk too much the investment. (for that so many tracks nowdays are remakes of past hits) But this time, we need to put ourselves out there as authentic as we can. Here I go! I will try my best to be authentic. Blessings to everyone starting their producer career.

I’m so glad to have a positive impact with the videos! The title looks a bit scary and pessimist but it’s my opinion and I think everyone should compare less and create or focus on their own stuff (in most aspects of life 😂)

During the golden age of EDM, producers and DJs were having fun and were ecstatic in their craft. Nowadays, however, it's all stale because of corporate intervention. Artists are living off to survive and aim to be Tiktok-worthy. The art is gone because business is king.

Is it corporate greed when 90% of the melodic house charts are artists doing their best impression of Anyma or Stephan Bodzin? Is it corporate greed when the entire dubstep scene decided they were going to do their best impression of skrillex? It's not corporate greed dude. It would love for it to be that simple, but it's not. I'm behind the scenes enough with labels and distributors to know we don't have an A&R problem, or a "the label wants this sound" problem. It's actually the producers this time. Which is good news, because that means they can all wake up one day and decide to be themselves. However, most people aren't risk seeking. They mimic what they know already works. You can try to blame that on the labels, but I assure you, nobody at the labels are telling these guys what to make. Producers are making songs and hore them around to different labels. The electronic music scene never got bigfooted by the labels like other parts of the music industry. We should be proud of that. But that means there's nobody to blame.

I kinda agree with you on this Niko! We can go more in depth about society haha but nowadays people want fast results. And if you want fast results, what you’re gonna do? What already works… Labels are kinda the same tho. When a new genre pops and becomes popular, people (listeners) want more of this, so labels try to release more of this cause it’s what market wants

@@thexguymusic yeah but the way you just said it isn’t the way the other guy said it lol. Blaming the downfall of electronic music on corporate greed sounds more like a conspiracy theory. It’s way more complicated than that. And by the way it doesn’t even appear to be dying. Yeah maybe it’s not as trendy as it was 10 years ago but it’s not going anywhere. If you make good music people find it. In 2008 some of the crap that was on the charts was explained more by the demand outstripping the supply…at least now you have to be talented. I mean for the love of God I had a Beatport top 10 on the electro house charts and I barely knew what the hell I was doing in 2008.

@@thexguymusic It's possible. Something interesting happened in the hip hop industry in the US. You're familiar with the term "Trap" i'm sure? Typically 808's, Phrygian melodies etc. This was a sound popularized by DJ Paul, the producer of Three 6 Mafia in the early 90's. By 2004, that sound was outdated and gone from hip hop. Only to revive itself a few years later, and explode into relevancy 100x what it was before. I have no idea how that happened, but it just shows you that the peak of the mountain can be deceiving.

This is wrong. You can have an "EDM Renaissance" so to speak, but it would require something from producers. What was happening in 2008-2013 had more to do with a lack of formula in the music itself. This is why people used to joke about Skrillex ruining EDM. Skrillex gets nominated for a grammy, and the dubstep scene realized that what skrillex was doing wasn't all that difficult on a technical level, so within a year, 90% of the dubstep being released was everybody's best impression of Skrillex. Well that didn't just happen in dubstep. It happened to the entire scene. Pay attention to the artists who break through today. They're all doing something different. Afterlife is a great example of this. However, this wont last very long, because everybody's already releasing their best impression of Anyma. It's not EDM, it's the unwillingness of producers to be themselves. They're all trying to sound like somebody else, and it leaves the industry stale. In 2008, everybody was experimenting with different sounds. That's what made it interesting.

i agree. look at the tech house scene as well. although i still think its possible to be different in each and one of these genres, it just takes some experimentation.
@NikoBased

@@lilbthebasedgod2054 What's going on in tech house? Is there a couple artists everybody's trying to sound like? Or is it having a renaissance? EDM producers are on another level with the mimicry. I think it has a lot to do with how open-source the scene is. The electronic music scene was really the first time producers were openly sharing trade secrets with each other and random people online. It allowed thousands of producers to come out of nowhere fast (the good), but it left the industry saturated and overdone (the bad). Anything that rises quickly, falls quickly. It's like a law of nature. With that said, as long as you're not exploiting the formulaic nature of EDM, I think you can break through still, and if lots of producers do this, there can be a new golden era.

this is exactly what I said haha but you agree with me. When something gets massively popular like the EDM industry in 2013, it’s a matter of time that people will start copying… This happens with every industry, look at graphic design for example. That’s why I focus on the point of making what you like and not a “product” or something like everyone else (which it’s not bad, you can do it but it won’t be ‘original’)

@@thexguymusic Well I guess I was more or less responding to the title of the video. I get that YT titles have to be somewhat hyperbolic for views, but I did watch most of the video.

Okay, so I have been in the Studio just making stuff since 2012. Basically never released anything 👀 So I got something like 4000+ unreleased EDM / Golden Era songs. I've been trying to find my own sound, and it wasn't until last year I finally realized what it was. I think I could bring back a new Era of EDM, however. I'm curious how I should do it. I don't care about Record Labels or Copyright. Suggestions?

So true, but the new era is quite generic too. There are two million tracks sounding like Afterlife, Anjunadeep, etc. I think producers have forgotten how to enjoy making music and are just focused on monetising, ha ha.

The golden age of EDM has nothing to do with the big room and progressive house of that time. It had everything to do with the fact that producers were discovering how to make professionally mastered electronic music while being creative. Producers at that time were finding their own sound and style while creating music at professional level quality. So the mainstream picked them up. EDM started being played on the radio. It blew up. At the same time, the fan base changed from underground warehouse ravers to the beginnings of “PLUR”. The community was entirely about acceptance and bringing people together to enjoy beautiful and emotion filled music. Both of these factors created a new world that felt incredible to be a part of. It was innovative, fun, and made you feel good. Now days, the EDM world has gone to shit. Producers can literally go on youtube and watch videos on how to make tracks that sound like any artist or like any genre. It’s entirely formulaic. 75% of the EDM released today sounds the same. Then all these new producers have to do is have one track blow up on Tik Tok and then they are playing mainstage at EDC. Gone are the days of grinding for years in clubs just to get noticed At the same time the community is horrible now. Festivals are filled with influencers, chads, drug dealers, and more low lifes that aren’t there for the community and the music. They are there for the clout and/or to make money. So because of all of this. I will continue to listen to recorded live sets of the few artists that actually try and stay far the fuck away from festivals. The golden age is gone and will never return

Is it a coincidence that edm popularity completely plummeted when covid hit? Why does edm like Hurricane, Roses, belly dancer all sound watered-down. Is that because people are trying something new thats not great or is it just making the track more commercial friendly than it was before?
@thexguymusic
@thexguymusic 3 ай бұрын
I don’t think it’s because of that but it could be related with Tik tok popularity… Don’t want to go too deep on this but it’s like people want everything fast (short videos) and more music (ton of music released weekly). So this will make everyone copy the “trends” because they want fast results… Idk, just my opinion haha
