My mum died from cancer in 1985 when I was 28. From the moment my mum had been diagnosed and given a few months to live, my life changed forever and I definitely grew up and stopped acting a clown. I guess what I am trying to describe it that her illness, suffering and death took the fun out of my life for a very long time.

The power of simplicity

The power seems to stem from the simplicity but, on closer inspection, it really comes from the nearly perfect coordination of melody, lyric, rhythm, scoring and, of course, the harmony. This song is so unfairly underrated. I wish I could shake Gilbert O'Sullivan's hand, personally and thank him.

Gilbert O'Sullivan was really BIG in the Britain in the 70s and had LOADS of hits. Another sad Song he did was 'Why Oh Why Oh Why’, which was about being unwanted - his Songs had stories. I could relate to the latter, because I, myself have always been unwanted and never counted - nobody cares about me, whether I live or die... I even get this confirmed when after all the Channels I Subscribe to and Comments I leave - nobody ever responds... Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this beautiful sad Song.

Gilbert did indeed write the song himself, and did so at the age of 15, believe it or not. It’s hard to imagine after hearing this song, but his songs were usually much happier and playful.
