Pls don't allow for your son to be handling the knife or any sharp tools like that.Why not try to push the machine closer to the left as closed to the wall and place your plants at strategic areas as to have freeway access to and fro on the small balcony.You can even put the laundry detergents on the ground next to the machine if there is able space or get your hubby to make a shelf above the machine for such.
