The glorious opening sequence to Terrence Malick's mesmerizing film, "Days of Heaven" (1978) -- starring Richard Gere, Brooke Adams, Sam Shepard, and a fantastic Linda Manz as our narrator.

@@jadamorgan3399 Condolences. She was an example of how the Hollywood industry doesn't know what to do with the abundance of talent available. She should have had more opportunities to grow as an actress and gotten more work.

0:12 might be my favorite shot in all of cinema. That song played while looking at that bridge with that train and that sky. Wish it was longer.

Malick is the only director I know (not personally) that I can truly identify with on a visual level. As a professional musician I get a sense of Mahlerian presence. In fact, I've watched countless scenes of Terry's whilst listening to certain bits of Mahler. I digress. Terry is the greatest visual director of our time. His sense of wonder is unmatched by anyone else.

As a non-native speaker i can say that i always loved this kind of accent. I know nothing about it, but it has old times vibe for me. For unknown reasons i'm a bit sentimental every time i hear it. Also this movie is real art in the highest sense of the word: it's not Hollywood (if you know what i mean), it's all true. That ending: first tragedy and then life goes on, indifferently...That is real life.

I've never been to Texas, and more specifically the panhandle, but I hope its as beautiful as Southern Alberta makes it look. As for the 'immortal' train-on-the bridge shot - that was photographed on a massive iron trestle known as the Lethbridge viaduct aka the High Level Bridge built in 1909 and spanning the Oldman River Valley; its something of a visual icon in the Prairies and to many across Canada. Other visual cues to the film's slightly less than Lone Star setting: the letters 'CP' appearing on the boxcars: these are old Canadian Pacific Railway rolling stock, the mountains of Waterton Lake in the fugitive sequence (I was never clear where the characters were supposed to be at that point), and, most notably the Alberta Wheat Pool grain elevators; and please, correct me if I'm wrong - and I have done just a quick research attempt - no such grain elevators of that architectural style existed in Texas. Of course, all of this is said out of affection - for where I live - and for Malick's elusive film, which remains my favourite of his for reasons I can't identify; truly, few other films have such a singular atmosphere, create such an enigmatic presence.
