The best opening scene and movie score pairing for a car movie that Hollywood has ever done. I love how they snuck in head on shots of Dale Earnhardt Sr. Looking back from the present it makes the movie just a little more special. That and the featuring of Richard Petty as well.

During an April 29 show coinciding with what would have been her father’s 64th birthday, Kelley Earnhardt Miller took fans’ questions about the legend and shared a story that “will show a lot about my dad’s heart and just how he cared for people because he was very intimidating. “On my dad’s truck, he had this sticker with a rebel flag that said ‘American by birth, Southern by the grace of God.’ At the time, we had this housekeeper named Ann, and she was the most awesome lady. She was an African-American lady, and she asked my stepmother about my dad’s rebel flag on the back of his truck. “And so the next thing we know my dad’s out there with a knife and a razor blade, and he’s cutting the rebel flag out of the sticker. He didn’t want to offend anybody or make anybody mad in that manner. It was so sweet. It was a little kind-hearted thing. She just thought that was the best. She’s like, ‘That’s just so awesome that you would do that.’ He had a good heart, a big heart.” That part of his legacy has been carried on by Dale Earnhardt Jr., who weighed in strongly on the flag last week and declared it “offensive to an entire race … it belongs in the history books. That’s about it.”

I was 5 when this movie came out. Saw it at the drive-in theater then got it on VHS when it became available and watched it hundreds of times. As an adult I've solved 2/3 mysteries. 1. Why is Schrader on the pole leaving the starting grid but when the green flag drops its clearly Bodine? Answer- Schrader won the pole however, had to use a back-up car in the race therefore had to drop to the back of the field. 2. The garage area is shown and you can clearly see Davey Allison's Texaco 28 in its 1989 paint scheme white/black with gold numbers. But in the race you can see the Texaco 28 is all black with gold numbers. Answer- The garage scene was filmed in 1989 at another track possibly North Wilksboro or Charlotte. 3 (unsolved). Rowdy spins out Richard Petty? Petty really does spin out in the 500 however, due to a tire going down and makes no contact with any other cars. I've always wondered how they made that look so good. As Rowdy continues he's no longer at Daytona its a different track possibly Charlotte. Also in that scene is a Woods Bros 21 car in its 1989 scheme which that year was driven by Tommy Ellis. Which makes sense since he drove a movie car in the 1990 500.
