Daytona USA 2: Battle on the Edge (Advanced) Hornet Classic Secret Car

This is some gameplay from Daytona USA 2 Battle on the Edge using the recently discovered Hornet secret car. I mentioned in my '25 years of Daytona USA: Special Edition' video that I was trying to play it like the original Hornet in Daytona USA 1 (and the Hornet in Daytona USA 2: Power Edition) by doing the 4-2-4 gear drift, and as a result I kept losing loads of speed. I've subsequently realised, thanks to another video on KZbin, trying to play it that way doesn't work. It is it's own animal entirely and doesn't handle anything like any of the other cars in either this game or Daytona 1.
Fuck me, this car is like the Shin Akuma of Daytona USA 2, once you start to understand it. With the speed, over steer and suspension all cranked up to the max, you don't actually even need to touch the brakes to initiate a drift; just turn sharply and the drift will initiate on it's own. You just need to drop down to 3rd from 4th afterwards (in most instances) so that you can accelerate away again quickly.
I've included 2 runs here: the first was more consistent overall and slightly quicker. In the 2nd I got a blisteringly fast first lap, then bollocks'd up the remaining ones, which was very annoying.
Weirdly, I actually found it easier getting first place on the Expert track using the Hornet (using Automatic transmission), than on the Advanced. Stay tuned for that upload soon...
How to access the Hornet:
"Present in Battle on the Edge is a hidden "Specialist Only" Hornet car with modifiable performance. This car was originally thought to have been unused, but it has since been revealed that it can be accessed via a code on the course selection screen. Multiplayer colors are also available for the car.
To unlock the Hornet, perform the following steps when starting a new game:
Before starting the game, move the gear stick into first gear.
At the course selection screen, move the stick into fourth gear.
Finally, before selecting a course, press the view select buttons in the following order: 1, 4, 2, 4, 1, 2, 2+3 (together), and 1.
If done correctly, you'll get the Hornet in place of the usual selection of cars. The car's stats can be modified using the view buttons and the steering wheel."

So........ What you're saying is that the Hornet was NOT an unused car in Daytona 2 BOTE but was a secret unlock? And for all these years we didn't know that?! WHAAAAAAAAT?! AND you can tune the car???? Wow, this is seriously awesome. I see that it does indeed handle very differently to the Daytona 1 Hornet and that for PE they made the car more like the Daytona 1 version.

Yup, it was discovered by one of the guys from 'The Cutting Room Floor' website at the end of last year. Apparently this code was know to the Team Marubaku guys, a group of elite Japanese Sega arcade racers from back in the day, who have seriously god like driving ability, but they never shared it with anyone.

you have to use the 3rd gear much more -always if you under 335 only reasons why to go with 4th is if you need stability(to start drifts) or if you go over 335kmh. start drifts with 4th - for example switch 4th at 0:48 fro stability and start drifting.. in advance cource keep 3dr gear until you are 335kmh at video 0:28 you switch to 4th- not good, keep 3rd you will find out, good luck! btw i like a lot of your racing videos!

I was messing with this car earlier today for the first time, it's incredibly strange and it works best with the settings maxed out but becomes stupidly difficult to control. You're supposed to keep the car in 3rd gear 99% of the time unless the car starts reaching about 330-335kmh on or before a straight away, only then can you go into 4th gear until you need to down shift for a drift. I noticed this when the car was struggling so much to keep up on the beginner course while I was staying in 4th gear.

Yeah, it's definitely weird. Like i mentioned in the description, I found it easier getting first place on the Expert track using it than the Advanced. I had a brief play around with it again on the Beginner stage after this and I was still getting far slower lap times with it than the Phantom Full Force. There's definitely a 'knack' to it.

I tried this code yesterday on real hardware. Interesting fact, that cars weren't in their classic liveries, but just in yellow roof and silver body, like without any painting, with 41 sticker for manual , and red roof and same body and sticker for automatic. Also, I've never get attention to moments after race finish and just realised, that BOTE hasn't name entry and records list, unlike PE

BOTE normally has the name entry and records list, It seems that any times you set with the Hornet though are ineligible. Also, the speed record for the corners doesn't appear. That's weird that the cars should look different though. There are different multiplayer colours you can use, but they would normally nave the car number on them (i.e. player 1- 16) rather than the standard Hornet no 41.

@@MrThunderwing and this is double strange, becuase machines were in link mode, but Chums, Scorpio and Phantom was in their original liveries, so, as I see, link play affected only on hornet, and in so strange way. Btw, the machines are in very-very used condition, so I couldn't finish the race not on any of them

6:22 that red monster would have scared me too to making that drift that didn't work out. I know it's not the first time I see it since 2:05, but still I feel like this track has hazards mode on since the red monster thingy appeared

I don't think the game has a Hazards mode in any track, meaning the monster is only an aesthetic piece.

You must be going wrong somewhere, because it's not difficult to get it working. Have you definitely got your view select buttons configured correctly?

@@MrThunderwing Thanks for letting me know that it's not difficult, wasn't sure if it was my timing - you're right then it must be something else... All the view buttons work during a race, considered maybe I had them mapped backwards but tried the reverse order and still no luck :(

@@lounowell4171 maybe try mapping your view select buttons to the number keys on your keyboard (I think that's what I did, can't 100% recall...). It makes following the sequence a bit easier.

You might want to try Googling that error, I think it's something to do with an audio file and might be something to do with whether you're using the 64bit or 32bit version.

@@MrThunderwing Thanks pal, I will give it another go. Googled it yesterday but couldn't find anything related do it, but maybe I looked in the wrong place or not hard enough :) Both my setups are 64 bit version and very identical. Weird it works on one and not the other.

There's an "audio balance" option in Supermodel now, but it varies from game to game and depends on your speaker set-up, so there isn't a generic one size fits all setting. You'd need to experiment a bit with it.

You can do it on any device that's been set up correctly with the view buttons and gear inputs.

@@bruce6942 You don't need to keep it held down, just press your button for 1st gear before you start and then press the button for 4th (on whatever screen it says to in the video description) before you press the buttons for the views in the order it says.
