Silver Ocean Causeway - on DirectDraw has a different animation in the tunnel each lap (space, fireworks and Afterburner style jets) but in Direct3D it's limited to just one animation. Likewise the in-car view was culled. I think large bitmaps in Direct3D games were a no-no back then (see Need For Speed II SE losing the in-car cockpits too). Possibly because some graphics cards only had 1MB memory (or lower)? Although Virtua Fighter 2 did some funky stuff in allowing you to combine Direct3D with DirectDraw (meaning you can have the higher quality scaling backgrounds from DirectDraw with the filtered Direct3D stage and fighters; never seen another game allowing you to mix-and-match D3D + DD in one game!

Wow so informative. I learnt so much. This is a brilliant video. I didn't know there were so many versions.

So many versions yet we can’t get a port for modern consoles

Seen all your footage before but watched it again! I, like you, also started with CCE which I got many moons ago. Enjoyed it but couldn't understand why the music didn't sound right. It was a while before I found out it wasn't the ordinary Daytona and was a second release 😂 I've got both on Saturn nowadays.

It's a shame we didn't get the option for both soundtracks like the Japanese players did.

Stunning video! I sure wish you were on DF Retro as the co-presenter in place of the insufferably smug Audi Sorlie or that other guy with the awful high-pitched voice.

@@MrThunderwing You're welcome. I'm now curious to play that original PC version you showed. It looked a fun alternative to the arcade iterations (via emulation which don't play well when using a joypad) and the excellent PS360 iteration which I also own on console but nowadays choose to play via RPCS3.

@@sambagogo777 I haven't tried playing it since finally switching to Windows 10 (the footage was from when I was still using Win 7), but Deluxe is basically abandonware now, so shouldn't be too hard to track an ISO you can play.

@@MrThunderwing Cool. I just found the official D3D update patch via PC Gaming Wiki. Now to find the ISO and hopefully get it running on Windows 10. Cheers.

Not a bad Saturn racer, better than many but no Sega Rally👏 😎

The Japanese version, Daytona USA Circuit Edition, also supports the Taisen (link) cable for 2-player system link gameplay! The Net Link + phone line simulator setup is not required as in the North American network games which is how a pseudo-system link setup is created.
@MrThunderwing6 ай бұрын
Shame the link cable never got released over here, my mate had one for his PS1 and 2 TVs and I used to take my PS1 over to his house and we'd play link-up WipEout 2097 and Command and Conquer. Mind you, before I got my PS1, I was the only person out of my friend group with a Saturn

the Saturn had better resolution then PS1. Daytona was a really fun Sega-only racing game. Unlock the horse to maximize fun factor

I heard that sega of America requested that the soundtrack get re-done like shinobi x and sonic cd
@MrThunderwing6 ай бұрын
Interesting, I wonder what the thinking behind that was?

@@MrThunderwing I reckon Sega of America weren't feeling j.pop/k.pop scene in Japan and were more than likely feeling the European dance craze that was ruling the 90s.....I'm surprised the jet set radio ost was kept intact

This sad excuse of an EA NASCAR style Daytona USA was possibly the reason Dreamcast never got Daytona USA 2. Instead we got Daytona USA 2001 which by now had to make up for the mistake that was Daytona USA CCE... As a game to play it's just a mediocre snooze fest that is an insult to original 1st Saturn release. Great as a music CD though, Sons of Angles is sweat, 777 Speedway is very ITV Bruce Forsyth Play Your Cards Right theme tune and we like a Brucie Bonus lol. 😁
@MrThunderwing6 ай бұрын
I think mediocre snooze fest is a bit harsh, I found it very enjoyable to play... I mean Sega did make an _actual_ sad excuse of an EA NASCAR game in the arcade for their Hikaru board a few years later and that was a _genuine_ snooze fest. The moment you see the EA logo in a Sega arcade game you know something's not right.... Liked the Play Your Cards Right reference though, I can hear it now you said it.

I was 14 years old and on work experience at a local Garage when that mean machines sega issue came out. On the last day I was kindly rewarded with a £5 note for my 5 days of intense child Labour. Regrettably I spent most of that money on that said issue as I had VR at the time on the 32X. I wasted days trying without any success to activate that cheat before the penny dropped…..not the brightest spark back then clearly. Oh and I had to give the change back from the £5 note 😂
