DAYUDAY of the Bukidnon, Higaonon and Talaandig

After people started pushing me and after I could not find any clip on KZbin showing this traditional Philippine musical instrument, I just had to make a little video myself. It presents the one-string violin DAYUDAY (DAYURAY) of the Bukidnon, Higaonon and Talaandig... Stuff from my research archive...Stuff from my research archive... 1982-1984, 1993.

What's the origin of this instrument? Was it an influence from foreign cultures or independently innovated by lumads?

We can speculate a lot about the origin of specific musical instruments. The "seed" of an instrument starts to grow in a place or a region, spreads to other areas and cultures where it is modified in many ways, resulting in all kinds of new and different traditions… There is hardly any existing musical instrument that doesn't come from somewhere else… The spike fiddle dayuday of the Philippines, first of all, reminds of the spike fiddle erhu from China. As you might know, there is this theory that many Philippine tribes came from the area of southern China. Basically, I think this is where the Philippine dayuday comes from. But this must have happened a very long time ago, and the tribes migrating to the Philippines might have brought this instrument along.
