he does want to live, that's the main part of his character. his suicide attempts are because every failure reminds him of his humanity - which is his main issue. he doesn't feel like he's a human being. and if there's one thing that's easy to succeed in, it's failing suicide by intention

@@vaestar.. it can be both! Your body NEEDS air- so no matter if you’re suicidal or not… your instincts will kick in and you’ll do what you can to get air. That’s why most people jump in big bodies of water when committing suicide, like over bridges and stuff. Because you won’t be able to get out, and get the air. It’ll be quite the struggle though so Dazai probably wouldn’t do that lmao. What’s really weird to me is that you can see the moment his body starts to itch for air- like he starts twitching slightly and flailing his limbs before getting up and realizing how painful it is to drown lol-

I remember seeing that scene, it just didn't sit right with me idk why😭 the way he looked and the way his voice sounded just left me unsettled by the fact he does want to live, and that death brings out his will to live. Because to him, being on death's door makes him feel alive if I am correct.

It makes him feel human he actually doesn't feel he's human, and his suicide failures are a reminder that he is. It ties well into rl author dazai, and the book no longer human, a depressing read, but for someone with severe depression somewhat uplifting and reassuring. Ironically it helped me getting through a heavy period in my life.

yep! it's usually a commonly known fact amongst the fandom. each character is based on a real life author and their abilities are named after their most famous works. the author osamu dazai died by committing a double suicide by jumping into a river which is why bsd dazai is shown to jump into the river and talks about committing a double suicide
