I met Dorothy in 1969 when I was 13 canoeing with my dad and brother out of the Kawishawee Lodge near Ely. As you paddled up to her island, there was a bright red stop sign on the bay shore inviting us to take a break and come one up to her place. We had not seen many folks in the prior days, it was hot and the Knife Lake water was all we had to drink-straight out of the lake by dipping your tin cut under the surface. The landing was packet with canoes, and it was a real treat to enjoy a cool bottle of sweet root beer and meet Dorothy. I am surprised not to see any pictures of the stop sign. I found it to be such a dichotomy in the wilderness and a memory that stays with me.

It was water from the lake, that made the root beer taste good. Plus canoeing makes you very hungry and thirsty. Million thanks for entertaining us. St. Paul,Minnesota.

They do a nice job of maintaining the trails around the property. I can't imagine living there (with the outhouse that far away, especially) in those Minnesota winters. Yikes! She was a tough lady for sure.

The “kwitchurbeliakin” is so funny! Being I’m an “Indian” myself. Lol it just goes to show the way others would translate ojibwe. That’s actually how we became “Chippewa” is because people couldn’t pronounce ojibwe 😃

Good grief, pun intended. Now you're up in Ely? Are you looking at buying property here in the land of 10K lakes? You're nearly an honorary resident at this point. Dorothy's story is well known in MN, although she's not a household name. I think a lot of us have heard the story of the root beer lady, but plenty of us can't tell you all the details. Cool to see you venturing north to check out outposts beyond Minneapolis. I don't travel north nearly so often these days. I'm sure you've been to the bear sanctuary in Orr, MN, in the past. It's wacky!

Suggestion if youre ever in Alabama. This would be good for an October story. The Face In the Courthouse Window. Carrolton County Courthouse. Lots more stuff in Kathryn Windhams book, 13 Ghost of Alabama and Jeffrey. Not far away in Philadelphia, MS is where the Civil Rights workers were killed and buried in a pond dam in the 60s. It's near the Choctaw Reservation. Tallulah Bankhead family all buried here in Jasper, Al. But she's buried in Connecticutt. Nearby their grave is George Lindsey's tomb. In the next county north is Pat Buttrams grave. Jay Sebring was born in nearby Fairfield. Jim Nabors was born in Sylacauga, but ashes are in Hawaii. Heken Keller's family home in Sheffield, Al. The famous Muscle Shoals Sound are recording Studios are nearby, also the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. Hank Sr. And Audrey's grave in Montgomery. Lots more. Thanks. Love your vids!
