Thank you Jordan for this memorial/biography of Susan Hayward. She was one of those movie greats who managed to capture the screen from the moment she appeared. Although I had heard about the controversy surrounding the cast and crew of 'The Conqueror' I was truly shocked when you related the mortality rate. Although her life was a sad one, your narrative painted a picture of a lady who was both sharp and capable - loved the retort she gave to Selznick. Once more, many thanks Jordan.

So glad you added this! I was in Carrollton in 1984, and it's amazing how large the cemetery has gotten! It was very small and I recall there being only one or two statues in the cemetery. The foot stone that reads Susan Hayward Chalkley, and the plaque that reads Susan Hayward, and has the Seabees emblem on it, were not there. The headstone did have their names and dates on it at that time. The church appears to have expanded as well. I spent quite some time at the church and the cemetery, and the church is very beautiful inside, and was quite small with a "country church" feel to it. The acreage across the street, where their home and lake are located, looks exactly as it did 40 years ago! The one movie of Susan's that I rewatch time and again is a little known comedy called "Young and Willing" from 1943. Susan gets to show off her comedic timing. It also stars a young, up and coming, William Holden. Definitely worth watching!

The church building and the cemetery/grounds are indeed very beautiful. Susan Hayward was a giant! She and Ida Lupino really pushed against and crashed through the glass ceiling in Hollywood. Acting, producing, directing...they did it all. Building a church? I never knew about this...but it's easy imagine that Susan Haywood WOULD do such a thing. Mahalo for such a sensitive look at the final resting place of such a remarkable woman.

I know Susan Hayward was a great actress, but my favorite film of hers is that homage to high camp, "Valley of the Dolls." She and Patty Duke both chewed the scenery and spit it out in that famous catfight scene: "Now you get outa my way, 'cause I got a man waitin' for me!" Only a great actress like Hayward could deliver that cheesy line with a straight face.

My favorite of her movies is "Back Street," with John Gavin. She's great in it. I always remember it for John Gavin's character, racked up in a full body cast, unable to move or talk, he just barely gets her name out in a whisper-- "Rae, Rae, Rae..." My aunt was a downwinder from growing up in the desert of southern Utah. She died with half a lung. She was so young and an opera singer. The government was doing tests in the desert for years. Those poor people.

When I was little she was my parents' favorite actress, partly because my mother bore a strong resemblance to her. When "I Want To Live" aired on TV I remember being horrified by the story, especially after finding out it was true. My favorite of Susan's films is 1952's "With A Song In My Heart"..another true story but very different. Susan portrayed famous songstress Jane Froman & her life story is inspirational & truly interesting. I'll never forget the scene where Jane performed for wounded soldiers during WW ll. Susan moved me to tears every time I saw it. I recommend it to anyone who likes musical biopics (some great old songs!) & a beautiful, touching story. When was in my early teens she absolutely was my favorite actress! ❤️ My Mother had worked at the towns Theatre and I was able to see any movie I wanted free! I remember Valley of the Dolls … I remember one line … not all of it now … but do remember her fighting and having the other woman pull off her wig! The line I one remember now was … “ They are living high off the hog!” Lol 😂 I saw her on the Academy Oscars when she presented the Oscar with Charleston Heston ! She was such a powerful actress … I still remember … I Want To Live … she really deserved that Oscar! ❤️❤️ Thank You for doing this Vlog … I didn’t know a lot of what happened to her! Wow how sad her story was. Never knew her tbh, but thankfully we have Jordan keeping us informed of all the former stars from the past. I've watched many of the videos you've done of old Hollywood actors and it's clear that most of them had a life of turmoil eventually which makes it seems as if Hollywood is cursed in some way ffs. Both Susan and her husband died at the young age of 57, me being 59yrs old myself, it's just way too young. I see her twin sons are 79yrs old now, so they managed to live longer thankfully.❤
