Two small corrections, friends! Firstly, I misspoke on Saiyan tails, as finleyfield6912 correctly pointed out. They don't get two tails, but their tails do grow back twice. Somehow I mixed that up in my head, thanks! Also, Piccolo's power multiplies by a factor of 3 when using the SBC, not 4 like I said in the video. I was calculating his power before he took his training weights off. Other than that, we all good.

Also Nappa is not the only saiyan with facial hair. Vegeta and Broly's fathers, both, have facial hair. Not only in the anime but in the manga as well!

Two things about zenkais: Cell, Gohan, and Trunks aren't pure sayians and zenkais can go unnoticeable when compared to the 50x boost of SSJ1.

Half Saiyans and obviously Cell can still experience them, and a zenkai would only make a super saiyan's boost that much more noticeable. 3x50 is 150 but 4x50 is 200.

20:40 I think this why I've enjoyed recent arcs of Vegeta training. He was his planet's Gohan, a prodigy with immense potential, but he probably never received proper training from a master. From Whis, the Yardrats, and Beerus, he's made some tremendous gains and though he'll never outshine Goku in his own show, he's a realistic rival for Goku now that Vegeta is getting the training Goku benefitted from over his years.

Amazing video. Such an interesting people. I like the idea of Saiyan having very low genetic diversity, hence them looking similar and basically having the same faces sometimes. It makes sense that before becoming a space travel capable people they probably competed with each other for resources (given the huge amount of food they eat) so intraspecies compitition kept numbers low and removed weaker genetics from the gene pool.

Been watching anime since 2012 but took a while before I finally tackled the big 3 and then _finally_ watched dragon ball the past ~8 months. All 4 anime, almost every movie and now reading the super manga. Not only is it easily one of my favorites unsurprisingly, I find the lore about the different species but especially the Saiyans super interesting and underrated. Since I’m so late to the party I’ve missed lots of the discussion about it and I’m itching for more. Everything about them is so cool, really appreciate this breakdown. Thank you so much! Could you give me examples? Like, do you mean the panel in the manga or the toriyama quotes? It's somewhat hard to do usually because a lot of it is from memory (though of course some is researched), and then I go double check stuff and write the script, and it's only after I finish everything else that I put the pics in and by then it's pretty difficult to go back for every quote in a 30 minute video haha.

I listened to this yesterday so I can't recall all instances, but for example I remember that when you said "Vegeta killed Nappa in a ruthless fashion" I put up the screen to check, hoping to see the manga panel you were refering to, only to be disappointed. Same thing for the Saibamen video when you said "the Saibamen were pretty shaken when Vegeta threatened them", I did not have the image in mind and was hoping it'd be on screen. It's nothing major, and in both those instances it's manga panels that most fans would know (I havent read it in ages which is why I don't have them fresh in mind), but I think it woud do wonders for the quality of your video ! I like the natural way sayans use their ki blast. Goku and Earthling use martial arts inspired moves,but sayans more like throw ki blasts, it is more noticeable with Raditz,but also Turles. Feels really raw strenght,no technique,also the use of knees and elbows more than punches. Nappa seems to have the "raw" theme to a point, with body tackles,mouth blasts, large explosions and so on. Very animalistic.

Zenkai boost works like the situation with Gohan and Goku in the room of spirit and time. You train in base form because transformations are simply a multiplier of your base form so the stronger your base, the more powerful your transformations become and your base form even becomes stronger to support the toll of the transformations on the body and mind as the multipler from the transformations increases. Also you can spend long periods of time in a trasformed state and overtime the transformation becomes easier to control until it pretty much feels like a natural state causing you to be able to transform without having to use much energy because you're so used to the transformation and then power up from there

For some reason, I always think that Goku and Vegeta they getting very stocky build. That’s why when you mention that they get taller I think they get more muscle mass as they get older and they trained but that’s just me though. I also think that pure blooded sayians get more than Zenkais because their bult for fighting as for train, ability and potential have sayians have the advantage as for the tails pure blooded sayians have tails, but half sayians don’t and I am aware that in the Saiyan saga gohan had to tell when he was a kid but that was a retcon since the interview the toriyama’s said that have sayians don’t have tails that’s why I do believe that pure blooded sayians get ssj4. It’s interesting that Nappa was a 4.000 but when he use the attack against Goku, it went up to 7000 only for a little bit like you mentioned

Great lore video man on the Saiyans that is very knowledgeable and you have only in 30 minutes short time you managed to cover a many aspects of their culture society and their worldview. Growing up and still now I still think the Saiyans are culturally evil is miniature actions until they start interacting with humanity on planet Earth mainly through (Vegeta who became a better man and a better person)they were not really good people even with the cultural differences they have to earthlings I still argue that they are fundamentally evil at least on a cultural level/societal levels.

That is not what his power is in the manga, however. Piccolo's SBC was below that and able to pierce his armor and body, and the saibaman were 1,200 and confirmed to be as strong as Raditz.

@@pooheadz189 Piccolo's first SBC only grazed Raditz's shoulder causing minor damage. Piccolo's second SBC was shot at a weakened Raditz (from Gohan's attack). Further, after Tien beats the first saibaman, Nappa states "ばかな…!! 栽培マンの戦闘力は１２００だぞ…!! パワーだけならラディッツに匹敵する…!!" which Herms 98 translated to “Impossible…!! The Saibaiman’s battle power is 1,200…!! In terms of power, it *rivals* Raditz…!!” VIz translated the 匹敵/hitteki, to be equal to but Viz hasn't been without mistakes and I trust Herms over them.

Plus, while Raditz was weakened, he did not have a battle reading of his weakened state, but he did have a battle reading of Piccolo's attack, which he was certain would kill him regardless.

Son Gohan [#SA1#GOH] Chapter: 204 (DBZ 10), P12.1-2 Vegeta: “At any rate, the battle power of Kakarot’s son is unusually high, even by the standards of Saiyan children.” Nappa: “Maybe his reading was wrong.” Vegeta: “No, it wasn’t wrong. *Raditz really took a large amount of damage from that brat’s attack.* It seems that mixing Saiyan and Earthling blood begets a powerful hybrid.” *This quote from Vegeta supports my claim that Raditz was indeed weakened greatly from Gohan's surprise attack, which made him especially vulnerable to Piccolo's 2nd SBC as been previously stated.* Chapter: 203 (DBZ 8), P4.1, P8.3, P9.4 Context: Gohan gets extremely mad as Raditz torments Goku, powering up, but this power goes away quickly Raditz: “Ba…ba…battle power 1,307?! [ ] N... now his battle power is only 1. It... it completely changes with his em... emotions…[ ] Only a child?! You’re joking! The brat has a higher battle power than *you!* I’ll kill him now, while he still doesn’t know how to use it properly…!” *This excerpt is especially important because Raditz himself offers a comparison of Gohan's 1,307 power level to Goku's with the former exceeding the latter, but notice Raditz does not include himself along with Goku.* 8. Saibaimen [#SA2#BAI] Chapter: 215 (DBZ 21), P1.3 Context: after Tenshinhan beats a Saibaiman Nappa: “"I'm-impossible...!! The Saibaiman's battle power is 1,200...!! Going just by power, he *rivals* Raditz...!!" *Here is the main quote, which uses the more vague term 'rival' instead of the more specific 'equal' in terms of the Saibaiman's power level in relation to Raditz. Case in point, you reference 25% as vast, but Yamcha's power level of 1,480 was close to Daizenshuu 7's 1,500 listing for Raditz (Yamcha being numerically 23.3% more powerful than than a Saibaiman), yet Yamcha ultimately died to a Saibaiman's attack.* *This, it is pretty clear from all of the above evidence, Raditz was indeed at a power level of 1,500, which can still be considered rivaled by a Saibaiman's 1,200.*

@@charzanboo9940The only quote there that could be construed as his battle power being above 1200 there is Raditz saying Gohan's battle power was above Goku's and not his. Though it could have been said because Goku is Gohan's father and ironically he's here to save Gohan. Piccolo's initial SBC had a PL of 1330 and Raditz was still scared of it, and Yamcha's saibaman fight only proves my point, because Yamcha handily beat the Saibaman in just a few panels. And a self destruction attack is more damaging than a regular attack, case in point with Chaiohtzu and Vegeta. If it wasn't, then there would never be any need to use it because it would be the same as regularly attacking, without the need to kill oneself.

I’ve always found the Saiyans as a concept extremely interesting from a narrative standpoint. I don’t think I can name a story that frames an entire race as simultaneously brutal conquerors with very little in the way of redeeming qualities while also being sympathetic as victims of empire who were colonized, subjugated, and ultimately exterminated by a more cruel force. This is made even more impressive by the fact that they never sacrificed the former perspective to achieve the latter; you legitimately feel sorrow for the Saiyans exterminated by Frieza, and you sympathize a bit with Vegeta at his death, but you also completely understand why Goku renounces them during the Saiyan Saga, and while Vegeta does improve as a person, he still carries in him the hubris and brutality of his heritage. A part of me wonders if it’s a classic case of Toriyamas improvisational plotting, or if it’s an actually poignant and nuanced point about colonialism and empire.

I would say it is a good commentary on colonialism, but not on purpose from AT's perspective. It's a really neat point on how, just because you're a subjugated people, it doesn't mean you're automatically morale.

@@pooheadz189 I agree. While I do think Toriyama can be good at weaving consistent themes and points through his plots, some developments just accidentally mesh. You can read Vegetas plight as a nuanced message about colonialism; though it’s far more likely that Toriyama just wanted to make Vegeta more sympathetic for plot purposes. I will say though, and this may be projection on my end, I always interpreted the Saiyans to be a challenge to the readers on imperialism. If you can sympathize with the Saiyans; those bloodthirsty, elitist, backstabbing, callous, genocidal, selfish, monstrous Saiyans, and recognize their right for justice against Frieza and their right to freedom; then what does that say about the rest of the races under Friezas heel? Nobody deserves to be colonized and exterminated, not even the most vile of life. On that note, will you ever do a Video on the Frieza force or Friezas race? I’m especially interested in how Vegetas armor is called “Saiyan Armor” even though we see that it’s standard use for all of Friezas men. Reminds me of how the late Roman military would adopt Germanic symbols, weapons, and styles because Germans were stereotyped as “militant and scary” so the military adopted their look to intimidate foes.

Maybe the reason why saiyans prioritize combat over sexual reproduction is because once they've proven to be very powerful and skillful they can pass down those genes, whereas the weak ones will continue to train and fixate on fighting and might die in combat before they attempt to get laid. Therefore each generation gets way more powerful than the last because only the powerful are reproducing

I think you might be wrong about the saiyans only being able to grow the tails back once. Goku actually grows his tail back two times in Dragon Ball: the first time was during his fight with Giran, and the second time was during his offscreen training before the 22nd tournament. Additionally, Vegeta and Raditz don't seem to be able to regrow their tails. Raditz even confirms that he could have snapped off his own tail when Goku grabbed it, but didn't immediately do this since he would lose it permanently. Toriyama said in an interview that the tails don't grow back once a saiyan surpasses the Oozaru in his base form, but it seems like that definitely wasn't the case for Vegeta. I think a simpler explanation is just that the tail can grow back before the saiyan gets his growth spurt, but not after.

It was never said their tail only regrow once, it's just convenient for Toriyama to get rid of them sadly. In gt goku's got his 3 rd tail and i assume it would grow back by going ssj4 or just being exposed to full moon. Piccolo at 3500 and nappa at 4000? It must be some mistake, maybe i should rewatch og japanese dub i thought he'd be around 1500 max...idk👍 Also Toriyama confirmed your growth theory in super hero movie. Edit: piccolo's pl is 1200/1400 and nappa at least 8000. Daisenshu etc are flat out wrong as they contradict real reading.
