I'm not 100% convinced BHVR *knew* the matches would be all Nurse and all Claudette players. Up until the last year or two, the devs left most of us with the impression that they never played their own game in favor of excel spreadsheets of raw numbers. I'd put money on BHVR just flatout having no clue the killer with the lowest kill rate by numbers would be the only one chosen.

This is the problem with many games tho, most devs don't play their own game and if they do, usually they are either not good, not willing to learn it properly or do not have the time to do so, which is why balancing usually is done with a mix of a team aswell as an outside influence, often players at the top of the ranks (but overall on every rank) that make suggestions based on the current situations. Sadly, BHVR seems to do none of that as time has shown time and time again. Not saying it's easy to balance an A-symetrical game with 2 gamemodes essentially (SwF and SoloQ) and neither will it ever be well balance for both sides but I'd generally argue DBD is one of the most poorly balanced games out there.

I think the main problem with the hatch situation is the rule itself. It's stated that whoever "finds" the hatch first gets the point. However, its impossible to tell from the view we had whether the survivor was waiting behind the rock for the hatch to open, while also trying to hide from the nurse, or if they arrived seconds after the nurse and had "found" it second.

I entered and won a DbD tournament way back, it was when the Pig was the newest killer and it was an Xbox exclusive tournament held by fans. No grand prizes, just having competitive fun and giving fans a fun show. Let me see if I remember what the rules were 🤔 - Only items found in-game via chests were allowed. - Perks cannot be repeated, so only one decisive strike for example. - Different characters, Claudette was the Meta for hiding in the shadows due to darker lighting plus her dark clothes and complexion. - And for some reason, no licensed Killers. This one was puzzling, maybe to prevent Pig players from camping at reverse bear trap boxes? I was a Freddy Main at that time so this rule hurt, decided to pick the Doctor for the tournament due to similar playstyles/strategies. - Oh and no Iridescent add-ons for Killers. Which I'm convinced was specifically to prevent instant down Huntress games. Not a perfect set of rules, but everything else was fair game. Only had one game where 3 Survivors escaped and that was on the swamp map with the boat, it was the largest map at the time with tall grass to hide in. - Oh I forgot, maps were random but repeated for each team for a full round. Meaning one round, all teams would play Coal Tower. Next round would be in Haddonfield, that kind of stuff. It was fun, I played as the Killer for my team and we actually won first place. It felt great because (this was before cross play was added) for a few months I would get messages from other players after matches who recognized me from the tournament. Messages like "Hey, you're the Doctor main dude!" 🤣 I felt like a mini celebrity haha, only problem was I would explain often that I'm a Freddy main but the tourney wouldn't let me play as him so I picked the Doc instead haha! Tourneys can and should be fun, it's a damn shame hearing what happened here.

BHVR fucked up by letting Space handle everything besides the basic ruleset and expecting a massive game like DbD to not have a fuckton of entries based on the fact that they only expected less than 20 teams to join in a no-minimum skill tournament registration. Space fucked up by taking on a job that they knew they couldn't possibly pull off and giving the shittiest most thrown-together approach possible to everything. They had TIME. Also, face camping is like the legit best strategy in that game but it's alright because there are savior roles that survivors can take up in order to save their teammates from a camping killer. Because it's restricted to certain survivors not everyone can use these so you can't have 4 team saviors. Also, perks like borrowed timed, sprintburst and the like are limited to 2 different ones per person even though they are universal. You can have 4 stack Ds unbreakable but you can't also have borrowed time and dead hard. The fact that it's a mobile game developed by a Chinese company with gacha and chibi-esque artstyle makes it all the better.

In order to have a pro scene you need clear-cut rules that at the end of a tournament allow you to point to one team or player and say "this is the winner!". In LoL the game itself says "you win/lose", but who wins when a round of DBD ends? Is it the killer who sacrificed two survivors, or is it the two survivors that escaped? Should players sign up as teams (as in the tournament in the video), or as individuals? Since the game itself doesn't declare winners or losers, then a point scoring system becomes necessary, and organizers need to make this scoring system themselves. In other words, you'll need to make a number of serious fundamental decisions regarding the structure of any tournament, and that's before you even get into discussing gameplay rules like items, addons, perks and facecamping. Again compare this to LoL, where a tournament organizer just needs to pick a tournament format (double elimination, round robin, etc.)...

For what’s said at the beggining of the video, I genuinely think that that is the least of our problems regarding comp scene. Even though the game is asymmetrical, a tournament entails that both sides will play both survivor and killer EQUALLY, which means that even though survivors may win every match or killers may win every match, it would still be a symmetrical match since the other team will have the same opportunity to play the other side as well. I feel like we should ask the questions of whether people will actually be interested in a DBD official comp scene and is it going to be profitable at all.

People put A LOT of hard work and dedication into making their unofficial DBD tournaments, and those are great to watch. For example, I'd love for the DBDLeague broadcast be an official BHVR affiliated tournament. They are by far the closest thing to a real esports scene you could want for this game. Instead of doing the player cups (that they just cancelled) they could have DBDL backed and support their own league/tournaments. They'd be very hands-off, low investment, and already have structure in place.

I've been following DBDL for a couple of years now and it has vastly improved since Dir3 took over. The volunteers are amazing and the comp community is helpful. I'm fairly confident that DBDL is more capable/ competent than BHVR could ever be hosting tourney's.

Crazy how the other similar game to dbd, Identity V, has official tournaments every year and online events from time to time unlike behavior. Netease works with behavior on the mobile port of dbd too. Even if they are different games, they are both similar in core gameplay. Could be how the games rules are set and how dbd Is so inflated in different items and rng things unlike idv where maps are set and only the persona charts can differ but they make it interesting with limiting character selection, map rotation and multiple hosts. Unofficial dbd tournaments have these rules too and keep a stable viewing experience. So 4v1 games can have successful esport tournaments but the execution has to work. Love both games but man the ways these two companies treat their game is crazy

*Looks at Identity V COA* Idk if any Tournament has done this for dbd yet so sorry if I’m repeating anything So what if for the dbd tournament which ever survivor you pick has to use those 3 perks that survivor comes with. No duplicates, this would go the same way with killers. Killers can bring up to yellow add ons And survivors can bring up to yellow items with yellow add ons (survivors can’t bring the same items) Something that IDV does for their game tournaments (and rank) is that the killer can ban two survivors and the survivors can ban one hunter So to keep it interesting maybe have that rule (Also for anyone wondering Idv is China dbd, dbd is ban in China so Idv exists with the permission of dbd, survivors all have unique ability’s and so do hunters but camping is one of the mechanics in game but can be counter with other mechanics (the game literally says how good that hunter is with camping lmao) Idv is big in China so it’s had 5 tournaments and it’s called, Call of the abyss so COA for short)

Great video! I remember this tournament from back in the day. One thing I can mention here which some people might not know is that there was clear favoritsm when it came to the tournament. Me and other people I know was simply banned from entering the tournament even if we did it before it was "filled". I know for me it was probably due to my harsh criticism of Behaviour in the past and for me trolling developers by using broken mechanics to force them to fix their game. However they had no problem with hackers entering the tournament. While the tournament was happening there was a active thread on one of the bigger game hack forums where some of the tournament participants were active. Including the group that made it to the finals who was completely open with them using lagswitching to get an unfair advantage. At one point people were pointing this out to Behaviour and tried to get their attention on the steam forum but the mods would just close the threads when someone pointed this out. One person even leaked the killers IP adress during the tournament asking people to DDOS him/her to give them an advantage. Don't know if someone actually went through with it though. Dead by Daylight will never be a competitive E-SPORT game and that is fine. The developers should just accept it and not aim to balance it around E-SPORT.

I remember when this happened. It’s a constant reminder to me that the only reason why DBD still exists is pure luck that no competition arose to kill it. BHVR constantly and very consistently made the most terrible decisions that would’ve killed any other game but since the players had no alternative to go to they just sucked it up. I’m still baffled that this dumpster fire of an event even happened, it makes me laugh to this day 😂

BHVR would really benefit from taking a few pages from Identity V’s tournaments… IDV is a mobile, chinese version of DBD (BHVR helped develop it) and they have a tournament where they a $500,000 prize! It’s big. They have good banning rules to avoid repetitive games. They have well-known players as casters. They DON’T host the tournament on the caster’s PCs. Only mobile players can compete for fairness sake. They have an event where teams will compete on a leaderboard and then those teams will be invited to qualifiers, then that’s narrowed down to 15 or so teams. Also, all the players are shipped to one location to internet/ddossing is not a problem. Obviously DBD has a smaller budget, but if they actually put in a bit of effort and budget, they could really make this work.
