I'm keeping my eye out for a baitcasting combo rod+reel just for doing this. Bostin's Nath normally carries his Perch tiddler rod with him,when out on the Pike, but he too is thinking of switching to baitcaster. Some nice sergeant majors coming out in vid 👍👍👍

I started getting into bfs last year. Atm my setup is shimano calcutta conquest bfs and tsurinoya elf ajing trout. Fishing with this setup always puts a smily on my face. Casts even 2g lures easily. Loving this content. Tight lines!

My favorite way to perch fish on local canal. I prefer a fixed spool reel, 1000 to 2500 size, 13lb Daiwa J Braid (single strand) and 12 inch 6lb flouro leader. My small rod has a casting weight of 2g to 7g. Walk anywhere with it, a small landing net and a small bag of lures, jigs and neds.

I will warn you... BFS IS ADDICTIVE!😂 I probably only used my pike setup 3 times last season and probably ended up catching more pike than I normally do and even managed to catch a 80cm pike on my 5ft tsurinoya dragon that is rated 1-5g 😂.To be honest you'll probably get on better with some 8 or 9 lb braid, I tried 5lb fluro on my setup and was getting back lashes all the time and soon as I switched I was casting much better and with less effort
@somersetfisher26943 жыл бұрын
@@pikeandperch I know what you mean, tbh I only tend to fish with fluro leader when going for trout and when going for perch I'll fish braid through to a short 15lb wire trace. The fg knot ain't too bad to tie when you've got used to it and goes through rod eyes nicely to. Keep up the good work man🎣🎣🎣💪
@kevinwoolner26213 жыл бұрын
@@pikeandperch I use cahira nitinol in 6 and 12 test , it's titanium wire and very thin , and good leader material, tie it with 3 turn blood, good instructional videos on how to tie it
@jeffslade18923 жыл бұрын
@@pikeandperch I go straight through with the braid. Some brands tie better knots than others (Daiwa J-Braid). A grinner (uni) with a couple of extra turns will hold if the braid is not too slippery (Berkley). Or a palomar, or even a fly hook knot. Speaking of which, a big brown gold head dragonfly nymph can weigh a couple of grams, if they are hatching. Choose braid by diameter not strength, the thinnest is far stronger than we need. The very thinnest I find too wispy to cast well.
@jeffslade18923 жыл бұрын
@@somersetfisher2694 why use a trace? Fly leaders are tapered mono or fluoro and we don't lose trout. (I tried an old shooting head fly line on a multiplier once, "will a weighted line work?" and no it did not work ;) A small 'brook' fly rod can make a decent BFS rod but you need an Abu GripLok reel seat) Braid can be thinner than nylon leader. Perch have sharp teeth but braid is tough and defies scissors, discard end when frayed. Unlike mono it still holds when nicked a few times. I've had leader knots fail on the weak leader (braid pinches nylon) but not the braid to hook knot. A few braids defy knots, they slip, they're no good; the braid must hold a knot. Try different knots out before going fishing. Some knots take too long to tie on the bankside; simple works. Delicate presentation can be done with 0.08mm - 0.13mm braid (0.08mmm braid is over 7kg, 4-lb mono is about 0.13mm) If you are beach casting then yeah fg knot braid to shock-absorber leader. But we're not lobbing a 6-oz lead.

Casting BFS takes a little getting used to after a bigger casting reel. The reel has to be quite loose to cast the light weights, so it relies more on the magnetic brakes and your thumb. I have a preference for the very thin and floppy silk-like japanese light braid over the stiffer and more springy nylon/fluorocarbon for throwing loops off the reel. Even though it has a shallow spool, don't fill it.

I scaled my gear down years ago - stands to reason there are more small/medium fish than big fish . Got a # 1 weight fly rod , small fish on light gear . I've caught jacks on BFS and Savage gear mayfly nymph . Check out Perch Jesus channel - he catches a fair size jack on BFS . Its great for trout and chub too . I found The Major Craft benkei BFS 2-7 g has more poke , and is a better choice if jacks and snags are about . Casting super light baits is down to the reel quality mostly -some blokes modify their reels with superlight spools etc . Bigger hooks harder to set on light gear - so your sharpening tip was spot on .
