Fun fact: Despite the fact people say he hates Goku due to the crying he actually doesn’t, in the Japanese Dub of the Z Broly movie Paragus explained that Broly actually sensed Goku’s power when he first arrived on the trap planet/New Planet Vegeta (Specifically in the scene where they were sizing each other up and everything faded to black except for them and their auras.) and that caused his saiyan instincts to go out of control which made him see Goku as a powerful opponent he wanted to fight and kill, the crying had nothing to do with it. He says quote, “Could it be Kakarrot? Does this mean that Broly’s instincts as a saiyan have been awakened by Kakarrots power, and he is starting to overcome my mind control?” Also in the JP dub he only knows Goku’s saiyan name because Vegeta said it right in front of Broly. Broly also only starts remembering Goku right when he is defeated. Also regarding Second Coming and Broly waking up to crying: It’s pretty obvious that Broly only remembered Goku right when he was defeated, since the crying scene appears a second time right before he is defeated where he yells out Goku’s saiyan name louder than he did before. And in the second movie it’s pretty obvious that a mix between the final blow from the first movie, being frozen, and being beaten left Broly in a mentally horrible state. Goten’s crying definitely reminded him of Goku’s crying, and he was definitely pissed about losing to Goku, especially after doing all of that trash talk. Broly probably did have a feeling of familiarity with Goku before he fully remembered, but that is it, Paragus and even the scene where they size each other up shows and says that Broly was focused on Goku’s power.

I think even with the many times you've mentioned this fun fact. You can at least concede that Z Broly's be fixated on Goku is flawed with his backstory of being exiled by King Vegeta in mind. He should be focused on Vegeta. In fact, why didn't Vegeta trigger his saiyan instincts to go haywire? He can't be that much weaker than Goku for it to not register and it's not like either of them did well against him at full power. A simple change of who Broly goes after makes it so you wouldn't need to post this comment every single time Z Broly gets some pushback especially with Second Coming being a thing and muddying the waters of your point with the crying.

Hello. I just got back from watching the sub of the Broly movie, and i have some notes. So based on how it's presented and the scenes we see when talking about it, the Saiyan Instinct that Paragas is talking about is Broly wanting to mindlessly destroy things. We arent talking about Sayain pride here, which is what pushes saiyans to fight stronger opponents, since Broly has no idea how strong Goku even is, and Saiyans dont feel that urge until they KNOW the person is stronger than them. Saiyans historically also needed technology to read power levels, so you can't really say he sensed Goku, especially since he had no reaction to Goku's presence until physically seeing him and ki sensing is a learned ability that Vegeta didnt even come across until earth. Even if you wanna conflate the two, Paragas is only speculating that Broly's instincts being riled up from Goku's presence is what's allowing him to bypass the controller. It's pretty clear that hes not explaining WHY Broly's instincts would be reacting this way in the scenes you'rerefering to. However, If you look at the scene after that speculation, Paragas pretty much spell out that it was Goku making Broly cry. Lemme quote Paragas word for word here. "Assuming the controller is really working, it must have been his meeting with Kakarot. Broly and Kakarot were born on the same day, one right after the other. If it is Kakarot...." There is then a flashback, which the following lines are said by people off screen. "I'm shocked by Paragas's son. He's just been born, and yet his battle power is already 10,000. Bardock's son with a battle power of only 2 made Paragas's son cry! His battle power may be low, but that kid named Kakarot at least has a lot of guts" The scene then hangs on the shot of Goku screaming, pans to Broly crying and then fades from crying baby Broly to the the currently tweeking out Broly. So based on how this scene plays out, Paragas himself seems to think that Goku's presences is resurfacing Broly's memories of being terrorized by baby Goku, which is setting off Broly's destructive instincts so hard that it let's him bypass the controller. It's pretty cut and dry even in Japanese that Goku making Broly cry is the source of Broly's instincts running out of control when Goku is around.

It's not the point you can love the dub better even but i'm telling, A LOT of DBZ era dub is just either mistranslated or straight up invented dialogues. GT is the biggest culprit of that. The reason why so much people cry about goku in modern dragon ball is because the dub is now better and more faithfull and not that fake dragon ball english fans thought was DB. In a way theres a good discussion to be had about Goku's character. My headcannon is that broly got ptsd from when he was a baby and subconsciously remembers the crying while being stabbed, remembers the pain and misery, but doesn’t actually remember the event too much, maybe was told about it by Paragus later, so he’s been told, but doesn’t fully remember the event himself. Now that he’s older, BECAUSE of what he was told by his father, the name kakarot and crying triggers the ptsd. He knows it was kakarot crying next to him, and in the back of his mind, not fully understood by him, the crying is a deep seated bad memory. Copy Pasta Ready : Broly never went crazy and hated goku because he cried. As shown in the movie and reitered in DBS broly, that power was so much that it drove him close to insanity or more so the representation of a pure sayan as usually described. We see him as a kid, absolutely going mental and destroying everything in sight to the point of hurting his father from his fury. During the whole movie we see broly trying to control and not go crazy and paragus created the restrain mecanism just for that purpose because he even feared for his own life. Why we see them as babies then? Well again, just like DBS broly is it fate. Paragus himself talks about their fate being linked since they were born on the same day. Goku wakes up broly's fury and sayan instinct. The flashback just shows that while being such a weak baby kakarot manage to disturb broly despite his insane strenght. The medical guys even says so "that kakarot kid has guts". Much like Vegeta's vs Goku back in early Z, this is to show the sayan views, Broly is the legendary super sayan he represent the ultimate sayan. So by his strenght he views himself as superior and hate how someone like goku resist him. Btw in the first movie, broly don't actually just shouts KAKAROOOOT over and over again. He actually has dialogues, this misconception is from the next broly movie where he actually just shouts Kakarot most of the time. (Sure it's not deep but at least he shows personnality and has more dialogues than DBS Broly) Here now, PLEASE, dragon ball fans : 1 - Stop taking PARODIES as actuals sources. 2 - Stop using the english dub as reference. It has mistranslation and outright invented dialogues that contradicts the very material they are supposed to dub. There's a lot of nuance in the relationship between Broly and Goku. Goku was another low-class survivor but Goku wasn't almost stabbed to death because of the power he was born with nor have to rely on it to carry him and his father through space to survive, so in Broly's mind Goku doesn't deserve his survival.

The reason I love the sub version more is that in there they don't change dialogs. When you change dialogs it's almost like you are not watching the same content. The thing about his backstory I agree it's absolutely a joke. Saiyan Scholar says that the crying represented Broly with competition, and even as a baby he couldn't tolerate anyone competing with him. Which is why years later he feels he must destroy Kakarrot to prove superiority. I agree with him that way it makes more sense. However I would change it to him hating Bejita instead for what the father did.

While Z Broly is my favorite character. Just because like you said “how cool he is.” I remember seeing something about why Broly kept coming back. It said because Broly is supposed to be the “most powerful being in the universe.” So, how does the next “stronger” villain come by if you’ve already beaten someone who’s stronger. I guess it just ain’t that deep. It was just a quick movie they didn’t care much about making a big deal about until later on. They could have made his backstory so much better just by replacing the flashback from Goku crying to Broly being stabbed. That would make such more sense on why he crashes out. I understand people in this instance would argue that Goku gives no connection to him being stabbed, but they could have just made that connection in the movie.

In Broly’s defense, goku’s any/everything is the trigger of the stabbing. He never saw who stabbed him, nor recollects who did it. All he remembers is the baby to his right, his crying, and the stabbing. For all Broly knows, Goku’s any is the one who stabbed him. Anything related to goku, Broly wants gone. Simple as that.

Can we not like both without trashing the other? Why, becuase they gave Super a backstory? yeah most of what you said is true super broly character wise was not much deeper than z broly but i think super broly is a full realisation of a canon broly, he doesnt have the overly misinterpreted backstory that no one can agree on his motivations are clear and the way he acts is carefully conveyed in the movie and you said it yourself his relations with others and with his father are way better. he is not mute cuz of unexplained cte he doesnt talk and hulks out cuz of the controlling environment his father put him through he cant even make friends or defend chelai without getting shocked, he is just a way easier character to diagnose and breakdown/understand/sypmathize with, also he has done a lot more in the manga, even fought gohan. also in relevant to the story and has a lot more going for him in the future. also just has the better movie too.
