What happened is that Raditz showed up. Goku says they agreed that Gohan was too young to train at 4 years old. Then Goku died. Some of his last words was telling his friends to take Gohan back home to Chi Chi, but then Piccolo kidnapped and abused their baby. Luckily, Piccolo was redeemable and Chi Chi sees him as part of the family now. Unfortunately, because she only saw Piccolo from when he wanted to murder Goku, she didn't want her baby going on a space trip to revive his kidnapper. Cause, y'know, it's outer space and she just got him back. Goku thought Piccolo was different than his dad from the beginning, so he was all for it. (Plus, he's Goku. What's a little space between friends) He was proud when their son showed inner strength and spoke up for what he believed was the right thing to do. Chi Chi was shocked and sad, but gave in cause "Honor" and fuq d'em kids. Bulma reassured her that it was most likely going to be a safe trip.(Of course, we know that didn't pan out, and Gohan almost died again) Chi Chi and Gohan got his stuff together. Also, funny haircut. Then, when Goku came back from Yardrat, he and Chi Chi discussed Gohan again. Given the circumstances, Goku is like, "We need all the help we can get." And Chi Chi is like, "Hell no. Where have you been? What the hell happened with Namek, that wasn't safe! He's a kid. He should study and play." Goku goes to pat her on the back but oops, extreme saiyan strength. Time to patch up wife-y and beg for forgiveness. Then they agreed to have Gohan train for his own protection, but not to have him do anything crazy by himself. (And then, y'know, Goku breaks that agreement and everybody is like "What the hell is wrong with you?!") So they trained for 3 good years, with Chi Chi making them lunch everyday. (Maybe just packed Piccolo some water cause he doesn't eat) And Goku got sick cause he goofed up. Chi Chi took care of him and sent him back on his merry buttkicking way. And of course, Piccolo is pumped, gets powned, Vegeta pulls a Vegeta, Trunks is trying, Krillin does a Krillin, Tien takes one for the team, and 16 is left trying to process all this. Skip to exiting the Time chamber, and we got a free week. Chi Chi is like, "You made my a boy gangster? Anyway, Happy Birthday son. Go out and have fun, you earned a vacation." And then Chi Chi talks to Goku and it's like "Hey, is everything gonna be okay? Is our family gonna be okay?" And he's like, "Yep. Catch ya later, home girl." Then the *thing* happens and everyone loses their mind. Goku chooses to stay dead cause Bulma said he's a danger magnet and Goku is like, "Guess I should leave then, cause i keep putting my friends and family in danger." Now, Gohan is Earth's protector (for a few years). Meanwhile, Chi Chi trains her and Goku's youngest son until he unlocks Saiyan Hax and wants to fly. In Conclusion, ahe-he-hem🧐 Shit happens🤷🏽‍♀️🫠

Goku wouldn't have married anyone then. His life would be fighting and training completely. This also would cause problems down the road as Goku being married to Chi-Chi saved Earth because Gohan. During Feriza arc would be a win but once the Android arc and Cell arc, that's where the a great struggle would happen because no Gohan means most likely no discovery of Super Saiyan 2. The story definitely would be different.

He literally had no time to check up on her.
