What I liked about this story is Cooke's world-building skills! He even has a scene that's depicting Ted "Wild Cat" Grant's last title boxing match with an up-and-comer named Cassius Clay! It reminded me of the film "Requiem for a heavyweight." Great story. R.I.P. Darwin Cooke.
@ghostwarrior38786 ай бұрын
I like that fight scene as well, they could have easily stuck to real world history and had Clay beat him to begin his rise, but I liked Ted's character, he got back up and just going, and beat him.

New Frontier is one of the greatest comics in all of the medium! Darwyn Cooke (RIP) outdid himself. This series was a cohesive, seminal masterwork. I frankly would love to see this adapted in live action either in film or big budget streaming mini series, like an epic Elseworlds Justice League completely set in the period. Its a brilliant distillation of the era, tone, & impact of the DC universe. This was a great choice for episode 300 guys! Great job as always! Cheers! 🥂 👍🏾👍🏾❤️

This whole epsiode is filled with "Oh that's a fun/interesting idea" followed swiftly by a *HARD* turn into some grim darkness. I absolutely love it. Definetly going to pick this book up. Can't wait for Guy Gardner reborn. 56:09 - 56:25 | This description is perfect, this book is like a microcosim for the DC universe itself, a bunch of separate stories tying together to tell one big story. 1:00:03 | LMAO I swear I thought you guys were talking about the Chicago NHL team, the Blackhawks, at first and I was like "WTF? Why is a hockey team in this comic about 50s-60s American politics and the rise of Superheroes?"

I read this book about four years ago for the first time, and was in tears of joy by the end. This book is such a beacon of hope and inspiration to me, and is one of my absolute favorites, right up there with Kingdom Come and Watchmen. I cannot find a more enrapturing and brave showcase of what we as people can aspire to be, and I'm so glad to finally see it on Back Issues, for the 300th episode no less. Thank you guys, this one means a lot, and you hit it right out of the park.

OHHH THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! I got a bit emotional when I saw the thumbnail, New Frontier was a very important book for my younger self who was still learning about having hope in a dark world. Also, it's the book that took me back to drawing (a turning point in my life). You did it justice, guys. From a loyal fan, happy 300 episodes. Nothing will make me laugh harder than your take on "All Star Batman and Robin The Boy Wonder" (I go back to that one a lot), but this one I'll hold very close to my heart.

I don't no what it is but Darwyn Cooke's art gives me such a good hopeful feeling. It's something I don't get from any other artists in the industry. It's sad we won't be able to see anything more like this. But I'm happy we got what we did.

Sal, Tiffany, Ben & Ethan all of you are amazing talents, Pofessor Sal, your encyclopedic comic knowledge, mixed with your teaching skill set fits perfectly for great content. Tiffany, you are so sweet and obviously have the patience of a saint for being in the middle of these 3, Ben, your one liners are the hilarious love the awkwardness you add, and Ethan, your dry wit is the glue that keeps it together. So just a quick bit on Johnny Cloud before I continue on with the rest of the video, because DC's old war characters really resonate with me. Johnny Cloud is full on Native American- a Navajo, and first appears in All American Men of War #82. In his first page, we see the mounted chief shaped cloud who Johnny Cloud explains was present when he was born, hence his name. So the character sees it when he's born and when he's "born" to us readers. He starts out as a fighter pilot but unlike Enemy Ace who shares the same creator as Johnny Cloud, Robert Kanigher- Johnny always gets his planes shot and busted to hell. He does have that war chief made of clouds on his plane however. Darwyn's homage to The Losers is beautiful to me and I honestly tear up reading Johnny's death every time.

I remember buying the art of Darwyn Cooke before owning this and I gotta say Cooke was an underrated modern legend of the industry. I only wish that he could have found a way to be an artist in the industry sooner in his life other than his first short that DC released in the 80s. He honestly inspired so many to pick up the pencil with his works and I hope that those artists can be seen in the future.

I absolutely love this book. I picked it up at just the right time too. I was honestly feeling tired of superheroes and was leaning a lot heavier into indie stuff and was just considering abandoning superhero stories forever, but then I saw New Frontier on amazon and spent my birthday giftcard on it. I liked the movie adaptation and always admired Cooke's art so I decided "Why not? What better story to leave the whole superhero genre on?". What I didn't expect was how adoring of a love letter to DC and its history this book was. I was absolutely stunned by everything. In all honesty, with all the timeline and universal reboots that DC goes through, I think New Frontier is as close to a "Marvels" type book as DC can get. Reading this and then rereading Marvels (also rewatching a ton of Back Issues) made me excited about the superhero genre as a whole again.

Another 300 and even more than these Back Issues! Thanks so much to you guys. Seeing this fantastic book on the shelves behind the couch during several episodes, I couldn't wait to hear it read by Sal. This wonderful story, which after all is what every good comic should be: an honest synthesis of our experiences with all the contradictions that the future can hold for us. In addition, Darwyn Cooke shows us some heroes who, although fallible, can reinvent themselves to face reality not only with their fists but also with their inner strength. I am desolate because of the somewhat trivial interpretation I give to this work, but I am convinced that a quarter of a dollar of this banality would do good for the comics industry. The loss of such a sensitive and responsible author is truly heartbreaking. That said, I renew my most sincere wishes to you, ComicPop Gang from the desolate lands of Latveria!
