Happens all the time in DC due to (1) restricted airspace and (2) the close presence of military bases and a very busy airport. It's not uncommon at all to be on a plane and watching choppers maneuver 1000 feet below the plane as it comes in for landing.

Plenty of Air National Guard stations are at civilian airports. Air Mobility Command has flights that take off from plenty of civilian airports. If you fly around the US enough, you’ll see plenty of military planes when taking off and landing.

Military helicopters often fly to commercial airports in my region of the country as part of their cross-country training. My thought is that doing so at *this* airport would have been very unusual, and the helo was likely not actually headed to Reagan Airport. Rather, it was more likely part of the patrol that monitors the DC Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA), a 30 nm radius no-fly zone that was initiated after 9/11. That particular effort has resullted in more than one near miss further away from downtown DC.

Night flying hours are a requirement in the Army aviation side, so they have to do training flights regularly. As for why ATC didn't flag the collision course of the two, we will know in time.

This is not correct. It appears the helicopter is at fault, yes, but being cleared to land in a circling approach--a visual maneuver--does not mean you are absolved of responsibility in any incident that might occur. It doesn't work that way. In visual conditions the pilot has "see and avoid" responsibility, always, cleared to land or not.

A lot of pilots hate flying around DC! There's all sorts of restricted airspace around DC. There's narrow corridors where pilots can and cannot fly. I don't believe the conspiracy theories that are going around about this crash. I think the helicopter pilot simply lost his situational awareness, and at a high rate of speed quickly flew into an area where he was never suppose to be. This was just a horrific and tragic accident. My heart and my condolences go out to all the family and friends of the victims.
