If your going to stick with just a DCC decoder & not a sound decoder, get rid of that junk bachmann decoder & get a digitrax one. It'll run much smoother. As for the wires getting in the way, get a shorter wire harness. Digitrax makes those too. In such a small engine like that, the shorter harness will make it easier to add the decoder without the wires getting in the way.
