Great video. Can't wait to see the teardown video of the layout

Hi. Great install. Ive done lots of hard wiring now. Bachmann capacitors/suppressors chokes etc usually cause a-lot of interference to the decoder signal I find so I cut them all off and just use pick up/motor wires straight to each component. Ive just junked a brand new pcb on a Model rail /Heljan PWM shunter thats just come out. I learnt later that if I set cv66 to 1 on the coreless motor it had it would have ran ok. Instead of doing that went to the trouble of stripping motor out, testing on DC then hard wiring a Zimmo decoder in. Have a look inside a Hornby 71 the amount of stuff on that pcb its crazy and probably not required.

Superb install mate, now the Class 29 is DCC, it'll run great. Nice one, a breath of life into it.

I have an old Hornby class 29 myself so I might give this a go. Just a couple of hints for you - firstly, lay an old tea towel down on your work surface since this will stop any of those tiny screws and springs pinging off into orbit if you drop them; secondly, a little container for all those parts you disassemble is invaluable and will save you hassle when you come to put things back together again. As to the capacitor you removed from the motor, it was meant as an electronic noise supression feature since those DC motors interfered with analog television and radio signals (you must remember seeing the lines accross the television screen when playing with your trainset on the living room carpet as a child?) but I can't tell you how it worked.

Those little capacitors are added to reduce electronic interference for televisions and radios.

Yup, when I was doing my electronics apprenticeship in Stamford I had to do a lot of customer Hornby and Tri-ang trains to fit those caps on prior to the factories starting to do them. Cheers, Geoff

Re spring insertion. Get a thin rod of plastic or metal that will fit comfortably down inside the spring, slide the rod into the spring then insert rod and spring over the brush and compress the spring down the length of the rod with a strip of stiff plastic (old credit card or similar) with a rod sized U cut out at the end. Remove rod and bend the retainer down over the spring then withdraw the card strip. Hope that makes sense.

Also ya could have put lights in each cab area that would light according to direction

Great video, I have one of these to convert as well. Can I just ask though, what weights do you use for this.looks ideal, and after some. Thanks
@ScottRails8 ай бұрын
They are wheel balancing weights. I wouldn't get these ones again though as they are a bit big for some locos, AND they are slightly curved so don't sit flat. They are designed for the inside of a wheel rim after all.

I may have missed it, why did you even bother with fiddling with the springs? Was it not picking up power consistently when you had it as DC? But yeah that looked to be a super easy, install. It amazes me why some companies are still selling DCC decoders for so much, there's really not much to them and any argument of R&D costs for the most simple ones is long gone (there's a reason why they all look the same).

@@SpringCottageModelRailway ahhh ok, that capacitor that you yanked out, got it.

You could have just cut the leads to capacitor and saved yourself a lot of work😅😅😅😅
