Because this 5 cylinder diesel is cam chain driven, rather than belt, - I've spoken to mechanics who told me that they've personally seen examples of this engine with 750,000 miles on the clock with regular servicing.

You're making me laugh the fact the diesel sound is bugging you and you can't let it go! 🤣 Love yout reviews! Most Mercedes diesels are quite rough when they're cold and at lower rpms and the first couple of gears but they do quieten down nicely once warmed up and you're cruising. 🙂

Just bought one of these, fab car and plenty of power, had been owned by an older lady whos just given up driving. Well looked after and well built car. For a 2.7 diesel its very fast and not at all noisy. Much better class of car than other German rivals. My only complaint is the inside of the roof looks very high from inside.

Yes I agree, very good test, thanks. If you think the W203 C270cdi is proper rapid, you should drive a W203 C320 Cdi version. V6 smooth and almost C55/C43 Amg fast. Mercedes is always best.

That's what I was thinking... the c320 cdi must be phenominal. To be honest I was not previously a Merc fan but reviewing this car objectively really left me with a deep level of respect. I really liked it but somehow of the 2 cars it's the BMW 330d that I enjoyed driving the most.

Excellent review sir! I've had a 2001 C270 CDi Avantgarde for the past 4 years and have been really happy with it. Boot space and practicality isn't too great, and there are elements of cheapness to the interior (faux carbon fibre for instance). But overall it's a lovely, spritely diesel saloon which is perfect for motorway cruising. I regularly pull 45mpg on the 35 mile commute to work. I would have no hesitation in recommending one if you are in the market for an efficient luxury saloon.

i got one which has got 66k, you can barely hear it when accelerating and on idle it has the second best sounding diesel engine. the Mercedes diesel knock is legendary :)

Nice one Dave! Enjoyed your test and seemed fair too. Have had lots of odd old Mercs. Have had a 5 cylinder C250 TD before old shape. It is an acquired sound the 5 cylinder noise. I love it although odd. Better than four pots and shorter than a six BMW for length to fit in. Me I could sleep next to engine. LOL Just purchased a C270 2001 thanks for the test.

My dad has a 2002 c220 cdi coupe 143bhp so it wouldn't be far off the c270 cdi pace because it's very light and A lot more powerful than i imagined the power start's to come in at 1,500rpm and just pulls like a train after that i've seen her overtake up steep hills 40-80mph and still takes no time at all i'd like to buy a c220 cdi saloon in blue and re-map her upto 173bhp apparently the most you can get from a c220 cdi that would bring the torque upto 290lb-ft flying machine

So basically if you take petrol engine and sport version you avoid both negatives of C-class - the rough sound and the engaging of driving :)

+benzfen The engine is a little rough sounding but it has a surprising amount of mid range grunt combined with reasonable MPG. Your choice.

/Dream Car Garage 1 (DCG1) Actually for this old car, especially as a second hand, I prefer LPG converted petrol engine - nice sound, cheep fuel... the only disadvantage is the limited mileage. No matter how good is the diesel it is still rough and vibrate at idling. Diesel is more for agricultural machine :)

benzfen That's a great way to go. I have a brother that's a great believer in lpg and has lpg'd about five cars to date. His last being a bmw 545i. It's like running a super car for the price of a super mini.

/Dream Car Garage 1 (DCG1) Yep, I'm from his "party" :) LPG has higher octane rate 105 and if it is properly tuned there is no differences in power and speed, but it cost more then half of the petrol price in most countries it is even cheaper then diesel per 100 km. On top of that it is much eco-friendly then petrol and diesel. A bit tricky for modern Direct injection engines but LPG developer start solving this problem as well :) So I can say only: Long live the LPG :D

Yuck the dashboard in the Mercedes is horrible compared to the MG ZT's! Look at those nasty air vents

I get what you mean when you compare it to the BMW, I have a 3 series and my god does it absorb the bumps, it might as well be the closest thing to a jeep sedan. But it's not exactly a smooth ride like a Mercedes, it handles and corners like nothing else though...
