I recently watched the “Run It Back” episode about the 2008 Phantom Regiment show where Dan Potter from DCI got the staff from that show and the drum major on a Zoom call to discuss this show. This came up in the conversation about committing to the bit during retreat. Rick Valenzuela was a little alarmed that Koji and Kyle just kinda dropped Will not so delicately after dragging him out there. Rick expressed further alarm when they draped the cape over Will, including his face. Rick said he was thinking, “Oh my God, he’s gonna suffocate under there.” Will said he had considered staying down there the whole time, but ultimately got up when they were announced to have won the Spirit of Disney award, so it was kinda decided for him. They did joke about if he 100% committed to it and making Dan Acheson place the trophy by his body.

It's already been said, but the pure emotion from the members of Phantom Regiment is gut-wrenching in the best possible way. You don't even need to see their eyes to understand how much this meant to them. Their heart lives on to this day, and it's truly touching to see.

This was one night I wish I had attended DCI Finals. The raw emotion from this crowd let you know who the drum corps community was pulling for. No disrespect to the world class organization that is BD, but Phantom's show was top notch. I put this show in my Top 10 of favorite DCI shows of all time.

In 2008, Eli Manning and David Tyree made what is considered one of the greatest Super Bowl plays of all time to secure the New York Giants' third Super Bowl win. Two people over 10-13 seconds made history. 6 months later, Phantom Regiment picked up their first ever (solo) gold medal. 150 KIDS maxing out over 11.5 minutes made history. I was there over 10 years ago and and I STILL get goosebumps EVERY time. WHAT a show, WHAT a year, WHAT a moment.

I wish every year was like this. it makes finals night way more emotional, and a lot less predictable since usually the ranks never really change after the southwest championships. in my mind i wish there was a category and a way to measure heart and soul that is poured into a performance. looking at the '08 performances from bd and phantom, i felt the music from phantom therefore seeing them take it all in the end made it that more emotional for everyone. take the crowds reaction for example.

Christopher Hale that's is subjective as well because us Blue Devils would say 97', 03', and most likely 76' amongst a few others. I can't speak for all of us but the ones I marched with might agree. Also, I would agree. I sat in the stands marching Academy in 08' and knew PR was going to win because I hadn't felt that much emotion from a Drum Corps, EVER. Until I got to BD in 09' and realized they truly didn't care about winning, but have the most fun they possibly could throughout the season, and I did. All three years I was there.

@ScotAshton
@ScotAshton Жыл бұрын
Z88 Scouts and 96 Phantom so different YET the commonality was not a bunch of props and 32 measures of flourishing 16th notes while standing still, while the guard had mirrors and way too much make up, followed by a 16 measure drum break and a 16 measure drill.. no not at all.. they played with raw emotion and pure emotion, and they got down to the business of passion and soul, and it met the crowd where they were and elevated them to a higher expectation minus all the props and soprano bugle licks. It wasn’t calm and control and a cool, calculative machine manipulated by judges numbers as Concord BD so often does (And is a master of the right algorithms..) NO this was SPIRIT AND HUMANITY WITH GUT WRENCHING POWER DEFYING THE ODDS and the system with a sheer love of music stirring both performer and audience .. which is WHY people get into music in the first place. Sadly along the way, some individuals cave to technique only with head and knowledge surrendering to a mechanical way of presentation, but losing the heart and sweat which is sweet and drench an entire stadium with its pure passion. That’s what Phantom had in 2008. That’s what Madison had inMalaguena in 1988 and that’s what Phantom had a 1996 as well. !!!!!!!!

It sure does! Oh hell yes! Oh fuck yes! It’s emotion with unbridled passion and sweat … the blue Devils. Don’t know how to do that, but the Madison scales of 88 and the Boston Crusaders of 2022 in the Carolina crown more than a couple of times in the phantom regiment of 2008 and several times definitely knows what that is all about. The fans of DCI know it as well, and whether they care to admit it or not. …. So too do the BD concord crew.. ( complete with all their parts perfectly in sync , just right, mechanically precise, but lacking the UNBRIDLED PASSION 99.9% of the time! Yep there it is. One other commentator here said” BD doesn’t know what it means to be Spartacus!” Oh yeah! 👍🦾🦾💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

For the record .. and yes, it is years ago… PHANTOM had more emotion and passion and precision…… than the co- champs Blue Devils of 96…. I do not know how the judges can compare apples to oranges, because both were superb, but Phantom had the evening in both semi finals and especially all the more in finals, and should have been the sole champion. They were Exemplifying The SOUL of Music …. Depth of emotion and SUSTAINING Shostakovich is QUITE DIFFICULT ….. but Phantom did it with raw emotion, planning , preparation and depth … 96 was theirs ALONE! ( and the fans knew it if you heard the conversations afterwards, they knew it… )

omg i cried right along with those guys in phantom (6:19), wow was that emotional! Best crowd reaction EVER! By the way, i thought you weren't supposed to move during retreat, or as little as possible?

Actually, he's talking about Crown's percussion (they placed 6th). I believe BD's percussion took 2nd.

Michael Goss devs got 5th or 4th in drums. Top 3 in drums went Phantom Cavaliers Bluecoats that year.

The Cavies and Phantom are defenataly my top two, then crown for sure. i hate the Blue Devils. its not that it think they are bad, they arent, in fact all drum corps are pretty amazing. But the Blue Devils are like the Yankees to me. And BD always seem to win at all thier stops, like for 3 years in a row they have won at houston, when in 2008 the cavies did wayyy better with samurai, and 2009 SCV did extra raw with the ballet for martha, and 2010, MAD WORLD blew evrything out of the water

Dude, DCI was on PBS for about 20 years. If it were something viable right now, they'd do it.

2008 was a tough year.. Everyone was so competitive.. With Samurai, Finis, Constantly Risking Obscurity (Not sure if I spelt that right), Knockout and of course Spartacus.. I bet it was tough for the judges to decide.. But I choose Phantom's show over BD's any day..

at 5:45 is the moment when DCI should have realized that when someone other than the same 3 corps wins is when you get a crowd reaction like that. I have no allegiance to any corps cuz mine folded in the mid 2000s but as a business person and from a marketing stand point...that is how you make fans come back and SELL TICKETS!
