Gabriel {BYOS} f traditional grip. Doesn’t make you any better and actually uses less muscles then matched grip so it puts more strain on them. Plus, you aren’t marching with a snare that’s tilted from your knee are you? Sorry for my rant lol

@@jackargie1092 most people will agree with u but the thing is is that SOOOO many people use trad grip on lines that you just are forced into it a line is supposed to be all the same so its hard to switch everyone to matched when they have been play trad for years on end.

Drum corps is very political. BD has an average age of 21.5 or 20.5 each year. The idea is the older you are the more experience you have. In Brandon's case he was too good to not contract him. However you look at it he worked hard to make BD and he also went to Academy camps as well. He lived in Tucson and most likely he had Academy be his back up corp if he didn't make BD that year. So after he was done he moved up and continued with Blue Devils. Academy is a great corps like all world class corps. But people don't really stay in the lower corps till age out unless they choose to. Everyone wants to be in a Top 12 corps.

Just wondering, what if going into auditions you are physically unfit, more specifically being overweight and stuff. Would it effect your audition and how they would look at you regardless of how you play?
@jakekessler29728 жыл бұрын
They will take weight as a reason to cut you. However it just depends on how well you can keep up with the physical aspect. Because when you audition, you are not only auditioning musically and visually, but physically as well. I suggest starting a workout before auditioning. The activity is extremely physically demanding.

@qwerty00183 Plus, travel costs are something to be factored in as well. Brandon might live right up the road from the Academy's housing site, for all we know. Traveling to Concord every few weeks before spring training might have been a bit tough financially.

It isn't disrespectful to assume something like this at all. It is, afterall, his "beginning corps." I started marching at Brandon's age as well and I didn't end my career with the corps I had started with. There are people I know who stay until they age out, sure. That doesn't make Academy any less important to Brandon's development as a musician. If he stays until he ages out, great. Based on when I marched, corps that were under the top 5 often had members move on to the top 5 by ageout.

@qwerty00183 It's easier to start out in a lower corps to help improve not only your playing skills, but also your marching skills. I don't think anyone can get into any corps by being JUST a good musician; you have to be well-versed with the physical aspects of the activity as well. That's what I think, at least.

@hhmudirector10 жыл бұрын
Anthony, 1st congrats on your accomplishment. No small deal to be a drum corps member at 13 or section head by 16. That being said however I just want to give you a devils advocate. I think Brandon's story became bigger because of the "internet sensation" he was. To be as young as he was when those videos came out to be hanging with the BD line is unreal. I know 30 year olds playing their whole lives who cant handle those beats. 2nd (and I know I will get flamed for this) I think its much more common for a 16 year old trumpet player (or flute or clarinet etc) to have advanced skills because those skills are taught at a much earlier age. Many publics schools and kids who take lessons often start as young as 3rd or 4th grade. For percussion students, even if you start that early, its rarely contemporary rudimental snare. 99% of students dont even get exposure to that until they are in good competitive HS ensembles. There is the occasional rare elementary or MS program, but again those are all but extinct. Most drummers only have drum set available to them and that doesnt help you much if you want to break into the rudimental snare thing. Finally, being a leader is more than "recognition". Be proud of what you have done, and what you have accomplished. Dont feel slighted because someone else got a video. HAve fun out there! It doesnt last long even if you start young.
