I've seen the same problem on O gauge locos that use the same type of setup. Others have suggested a stronger spring. I like your solution better as an initial "try"! Nice!

Thanks! I'm glad you liked the solution. For this engine, at any rate, it's helped tremendously. It hardly ever derails now. Thanks for watching!

Very interesting... I may have to take another look at a Bachmann 4-8-4 that I have with a similar front-truck derailment issue. Like you, I had been blaming it all on the track (not that I'm sure it gets totally off the hook), but this gives me another vector for approaching the issue. Thanks and Happy New Year!

Good lick with your 4-8-4. I hope you can find a simple fix, too. Happy New Year and thanks for watching!

So true, observation, then action ! I had problems with a 4-6-2 Steamer, and work hard at adjusting the last axle under the coal bridge. I finally got it to pass the switch but was still derailing in the curve. The problem was poor quality and abused old snap track, at 36" diameter... it should work fine on new Atlas code 100 !! Thanks for your videos.

It can get hard to figure out when there are both track and equipment issues. It sounds like you're well on your way to getting it resolved. Thanks for watching!

Daniel , I have 2 vintage heavy cast Mantua steam ; one with 6 large wheels and the other with 8 and both have front small wheels and trailer wheels . Have you heard of any replacement motors wit flywheels ... They both work fine but you know, slow is hard to achive. If you ever do a change over of one of these i would be terrific . ITs just that you seem to use the perfect choice of words when explaining things..

I don't have any Mantua models, so I can't really give you any specific help. Long ago I had an old MDC kit for a 2-6-2 steamer, but I could never get it to run well and ended up getting rid of it. If there is room, Kato motors work well and are available relatively cheaply. I'm not sure if they come with flywheels, but you should be able to get a flywheel separately. A lot of motors have a 2mm shaft, so you'd need to get a flywheel to match. I do have a couple brass steam engines that need mechanical help, so maybe at some point I'll tackle one of those in a video. Good luck with your project and thanks for watching!
