Hey all! Today I dive into DCS, I want to explore why it is such a great simulator, but at the same time, why is it so bad? We will dive in its history, going all the way back to 1991, the year Eagle Dynamics was born. And we will end on the present day, with a passionate rant.
It was fun going through air combat simulators history, and learning how far Eagle Dynamics has come. I only wish the best for DCS, and I hope someday, it achieves to be the simulator it aims to be, and stops being such a headache lol.
I may be swinging at DCS quite hard, but consider it from a very passionate fan of in many ways, an amazing simulator. To watch more about DCS in a more positive note, check out this video from ED: • DCS WORLD - Top 10 Thi...
A correction to what I said in the video, I did fly the F-16 on release to try the flight model during a stream, forgot about it as I didn't sit down with the manual until other day to really try and figure out what was going on. The stream was really fun! Was not able to jettison my ordinance and was really confused about it, now I know why... Sigh...

MagzTV F-16 first impressions: • DCS World: F-16C Viper...
Before the release of the F-16, there was some controversy in the forums regarding early access modules, Nick Grey, co-founder of ED (Which I totally did not mention in the video) posted a message on Hoggit, you can read more about that here: stormbirds.blog/2019/09/23/ea...

For people who haven't played DCS or are wanting to get it: Dont get what X-Check is saying wrong. DCS is a wonderful game, without the bugs in mind. I've had DCS for a year, a friend told me about it. I got into it and learn the Su-25T. My first experience was, ehh. I spawned in the Frogfoot on a multiplayer server, I figured out how to startup and took off. I met up with my friend in the air, then got shot down. I spent the next week learning the Su-25T. After about 5 flight hours in it, my friend got the F18. At the time, for 2 guys who didn't know much about fighter jets, it was a really good plane, it is literally capable of doing anything. I got the F18 at about 20 hours of flight time and spent my next 2 weeks on my computer watching tutorials by Grim Reapers and other youtubers, I did the ED tutorials, but they don't cover the systems as well as the community. I flew with my friend a few days later and we shared knowledge. Skip a few months, I got the F14 and holy crap it is godly. Well made and designed. Thank god for Heat Blur. I learnt it and now I know how to fly it. Now I bought the F16 in pre-order hoping it would come out great at first release. Yeah, nah. It came out without any immediate bugs I noticed. Until I saw a formation of F18s all with their ladders out... The F16 is a great plane, It has enough systems to do basic things. If you are a pilot that is interested in Formation, sure know yourself out. But for combat it was not ready. If you look at all the planes in DCS, they are all made from different developers, the F18 was made from ED, so was the F16 and some other planes. But if you want to buy a plane. I'd reccomend doing research before buying, especially the more expensive modules. For beginners, I recommend FC3 pack, comes with multiple planes, low fidelity though (no clicking in the cockpit) but it is a great starter pack. Once you master 1 or 2 of the planes there, you will be able to decide what you enjoy, Air to Air, Air to Ground or generally everything. From that you can decide what planes. Now to put DCS modules (without bugs and stuff) in a short sentence: The more expensive planes have interactive cockpits. The cheaper planes don't, you have to use Keybinds like RShift + L to start the batteries. I'm free to discussing DCS in X-Checks discord, or just in the comments. Anyway, hopefully this gives you some insight to DCS. It's a lovely game with a great community, just the Devs treat you a bit harsh. (Good Dynamic Campaign(ish) servers to play on:) Best one is: HOGGIT Other good one: OCG Servers.

The level of visual detail is definitely coming on in VR now though which is good...I cannot go back to 2d but understand others’ views may differ. The sense of scale, depth perception and overall immersion is jaw dropping. The dynamic campaign is top of my list for DCS to add too....as long as I can invite a friend or too along to join in. As for missions in DCS now, I agree they can be like going to you own surprise party...however there are plenty of good multiplayer servers out there that will keep you on your toes. BlueFlag is a good example and it is flown over a (very simple) dynamic campaign on the ground.

A very well put together overview. I've been flying FC3/DCS since 2006 and you've nailed every issue perfectly. I never watch KZbin videos of this length but you managed to keep my interest alive throughout the whole clip. I find your argumentation to be spot on. The thing that worries me is that I am afraid it is bound to get even worse due to their current business model: As they add modules, their maintenance cost will continue to increase. They will need to devote more and more time and resources to fix and update products that are Not making any more money for the company. Eventually, it is going to become so complex (and messy) that the cost of continuously updating and fixing DCS World will be more than the revenue they can bring in with new modules.
@XCHECK

Thank you! That meas a lot c: I hope they realize that this business model is a ticking time bomb, it just can't keep going like that forever. after you get past the "study" part of the sim it seems like you really need a dedicated group of bros to fly together to keep motivated. learning the plane is one thing, learning how to co-ordinate with other pilots in different aircraft seems like the real fun of DCS, tied together by a decent mission maker.

Join a group on the Internet. I didn’t really get into DCS until I joined the reapers. The groups create that feeling of being a fighter pilot that was never built into DCS. Great video! I love the tone and I agree with your feelings towards the sim. It is really frustrating that some issues have been there for years and still have not been fixed and in some cases, even acknowledged. I do think ED does not have its priorities straight quite often. However I also think the community doesn't give them enough credit sometimes and it is also true that some issues are sometimes fixed without any announcement. The base engine doesn't get as much attention as the paid modules, of course, but it keeps getting improved, very little by little, baby steps, but it actually does. Having said that, I really hope they get some competition. Not because I want them to fail, but because I think it'll be good for the hobby as a whole, and even for them in the long term.

A good game is something what you love despite of its disadvantages. It's what I feel about DCS World. I remember the Hornet's release day - it was a revelation, just what I needed when old sim Hornet 3.0 kept crashing on Windows 7 and 10, and Jane's Hornet didn't want to run at all. The Hornet had some great improvement since the release day, and I'm sure the Viper will go the same way. Yes, they are in Early Access but there are regular updates. And it's not only ED who develops new aircrafts, we have also Belsimtec, Razbam and Heatblur, they make amazing modules too. MiG-21, Mirage-2000 and Tomcat have everything I need to fly and fight. And the Mission Editor is a powerful tool, especially when you learn how to use the triggers and special waypoint options. You can create very complex, interesting scenarios, even with some level of randomness. I know that dynamic campaigns are great thing, but only with clever AI to generate missions. Otherwise, missions are repeatable or you can fly a CAP with no enemy encounter. In my opinion Falcon BMS is the best Viper sim for now, but has terrible Mission Editor and far worse key mapping tool. And it's hard to "look around" without a tracking device. Not to mention the obscured air-conditioning knob. And DCS is a sim not only for hardcore pilots, but everyone can enjoy it - just playing Flaming Cliffs or switching to game flight model. Some modules have wide set of training missions with detailed explanation. Also, flight manuals and Chuck's Guides.

Love this video X-Check. A lot of passion and heart went into this with genuine feeling for Eagle Dynamics. I fear the situation will not change anytime soon. A couple of things - my first taste of Eagle Dynamics wasn't simulation but supporting the Oracle database back in the early 90's as I started out as a Web developer using Oracle as the database backend. Second thing which you missed but probably now know... Microprose is back and is producing simulation software again. A number of titles in the works including Warbirds 2020 targetted late 2019 or more likely Q1 2020. David Lagettie in an interview with PC Pilot also stated there will be a number of large anouncements in the next few months to look forward too - campaigns + simulation this is exactly what the community needs and should help focus DCS World as well. Looking forward to that video X-Check!

This was a great summary of the flight sim genre in the 90s/early 2000s. Having experienced that time myself as a teenager, what's so interesting to me is that Flanker 1.0/2.0 hasn't changed THAT much in 20 years. Great video, thanks for taking the time to illustrate these points. I must say though before Falcon 4 came out for me there was EF2000, at the time I thought "If it never gets any better than this I am happy", it was fantastic! Then Falcon 4 and same thing, I just thought this is it! Now I am flying in VR, in DCS with my friends (who are all in VR), I can see my mates head bob up and down as we laugh and banter away, details I could have never imagined I would ever see all those years ago. For me every time there is an update we get a little bit closer (ok sometimes its two steps forward one back, but I accept this as the overall trend is they are trying really hard to make this as great as it can be). Its not perfect but damn its pretty bloody amazing if you regularly fly with a great group of mates online and evolve with it over time. Also I have to respectfully disagree about the night flying. We regularly fly night missions and I think that's the point, its night, its supposed to be dark! I have spent many hours in the mission editor trying to make sure it is dark, the moon cycles from what I have found are accurate so if I want to create a scary super dark Case 3 carrier recovery after a mission I will stare clear of full and quarter moons. I feel for the ED team when they release an update and there is an unfortunate bug or something is broken, it must be as frustrating for them as it is for us, but more often than not it is addressed quickly. I can only imagine how complex a task all this is and personally I take my hat off to them. Looking back to my EF2000 days I now know it can and will get better and it will blow our minds.

Hey X-CHECK, great review, and as a newbie here in DCS I am glad I ran into it. I've been reading the docs, flying the F-5, ordered the F-16 on pre-order, bought the Nevada map, and I absolutely love the VR immersion. Yeah, things in VR land could be better and I trust in the future they will crawl forward, but frankly I wouldn't have gotten interested without that immersion, so it's a complete game changer for me. Many of the details that you point out, the flaws (e.g. the lighting in 2.5 I saw and scratched my head about already) are real and I'm sure hard to live with for someone that has been around the product(s) for so long. I understand your frustration, but I can also see the Eagle Dynamics conundrum as well. I'm a software developer myself. I know the complexities of doing it right, how much software engineers like to get paid, how hard it is to keep them interested in the same project for two years, much less ten years. A project like this takes a lot of man-years to create. I might be wrong about this, but the main issue is probably the economics. Yeah you feel like you're paying top dollar for that F-16 or F-18 module, but it really doesn't go far when you're trying to pay a team of devs. They're in Russia so maybe not as pricey as my home the USA, but they want to be paid regularly and well. Hate to say it though, it doesn't help that this is total niche territory. The market is pretty limited. I mean to really enjoy it, you need a top end gaming PC, for me a VR headset, HOTAS Joystick, pedals, Track IR maybe. And you've got to be really patient and want to read a two hundred page flight manual, and even those are lacking (Thanks for the Chuck Owl tips!) This product is definitely great for hobbyists, but it's not exactly Overwatch in scale and popularity. If you don't want to do all this, then yeah, go fly Warhammer or something simpler. ED needs to make money to push it all forward and bring it to a level of perfection that this kind of audience expects (people like you), and the only way they've figured out how to do that is to release a half-baked module as frequently as possible. Sadly, platform feature bug fixes are not a measurable revenue generator. As to the crankiness of the forum moderators and whatnot, imagine you're a hard working ED tech. You don't get paid a lot but you like the work, testing the new planes and features. You get to take care of the forum as well. People are complaining and there's not much you can do about it immediately because the you're are all working on the next money lure. Nobody's going to fire you if you just ignore the complaints or censor stuff so that the big picture doesn't look so bad, but you might all go belly up if the pre-release doesn't go out. It's an attitude problem, but nobody's getting paid to be nice there. There's often little focus given to "big nagging bugs" in the field at a software company where all the glory is in making new stuff, not fixing old well known issues. The number of fronts they have to push forward on is imaginably vast. I can picture working there, seriously. They'd need a hundred SEs to do this justice, with the right tools and discipline. I'm sure they don't have that and can't afford it. What ED probably needs is a decent recurring revenue model. IMO they need to figure out what people are willing to pay a subscription for. I have a feeling they could probably set up "dynamic campaign" servers and charge people for that if it's in such demand as you say. Once they figure something out hopefully they can afford to go back and fix stuff that they've been breaking as they make progress. It's called technical-debt and it can only be fixed by a compentent team that is given the time to do it. Usually those people want money! It works better that way anyway :) In closing what I'm saying is, I don't excuse all these problems outright, but I understand them, and the best thing you can probably do is go to the forum and tell them what you'd be willing to pay $10 a month for. Maybe they'll work on it and dig themselves out of this "mess". In the meantime, I'll enjoy learning what we have. It's a great sim. So thanks for the history, and I'm glad I watched it. It saves me the trouble of learning it piecemeal.

I’m the guy who used to play janes combat simulation games I was a fan. I also payed the flanker game. I feel nostalgic of that time. I remember paying janes F15 campaign, taking off with the f15e fully loaded with limited fuel and shortly after take off having to renerverous with a flight of f15c for escort. Then refueling, doing fence inn, dropping altitude screatching the ground piping up a t attacking a scud site or an airfield . I was a rookie then and seldomly retured home alive but when I did it felt just sublime. I one returned one 1 engine only, all systems NOGO and over temp on the single engine. You can imagine how I felt when I landed safely🤗😍😍😍👌🏻

I saw this video come up in my feed and thought here we go another ED bash. Wow was I so wrong! I've played all of the titles you mentioned being 47 years old I grew up with SSI and Microprose. Listening to your video I expected just vitriol against ED and DCS World but instead everything was honest and truthful. The issues you raised were exactly the things I find so frustrating with DCS World and for the first time I've not bought an aircraft that I really want. I have come so close several times to buying the F-16 but I hold myself back because of those issues you talk about, the basics. I'd never considered the dark side of Free to Play being that they no longer develop it and improve the base platform but that is exactly what is happening. Thank you for your honest exploration of the great, most beautiful mess that is DCS World.

I appreciate the work you did to make this video. I'm an old fart that first tried a flight "sim" on my brand new Apple IIGS (AH 64 Apache) about 100 years ago. Last year I tried DCS. I bought the F/A 18 Hornet. Yes, every issue and complaint you stated may be valid. Is there anything out there better? I don't get to "fly" every day and I am still trying to master trapping on the carrier and air to air refueling. I'm the kind that won't be happy until I have it down cold. I have trouble spotting ground targets and can not acquire air targets worth a flip. But I enjoy the process of learning it. I like that it is hard to learn and master. Its the hard that makes it good. The tutorials from Wags (and others) are very helpful. Could ED do a better job at pubic relations? Probably. So can Apple, Microsoft, Ubisoft and just about everyone else. I guess out of your whole video I would have liked a bit of balance with some more positive commentary. Sorry for the long post...

Thank you for such a well made video. Enjoyed the history lessons and your well formulated thoughts clearly giving your perspective. It has got me thinking and wondering how things will go for the future. I do believe that the core business of any cooperation should be the following: making finished quality products that satisfies the (long term) costumer which makes them coming back for more. Not leaning to much on a monopoly position or the pure consumer driven behavior of it’s short term costumers. I do think however that this video should not scare away (military) flight sim enthusiasts! There is still a lot to enjoy! A lot... I just came back from a looong time and get kicks out of this sim. Been playing Falcon as my nr 1 sim...but the graphic detail is really showing its age and pulls me out of the immersion a bit. The ‘gameplay’ however always pulls me back into it. Anyway, this post made me a bit aware and got me worried a bit. But like I said, there is still a lot of fun to get from DCS...the graphics, the sounds, the flight models, the details, the chosen planes, ... and come on, those smoke coming from the engines!😉

A fair and accurate assessment of the current state of DCS World. I love it, I own most of the modules, but you're absolutely right about the neglect of the core game. ED doesn't seem to grasp that improving the core makes every single one of the paid modules more valuable. If they improved the AI, or improved ATC, they'd make each aircraft more appealing. Implementing a dynamic campaign might negatively impact the sales of scripted campaigns, but I don't think they're making very much money off of most of those anyhow, and they could always start selling different dynamic campaigns. There's so much untapped potential there, and a few new jets won't unlock it. Only improving the core game will propel DCS to the heights it deserves to reach.

You may not be aware but more than 50% of the company is working on improving DCS core functionality. Having been an Eagle Dynamics customer since the Lock On: MAC days, I can but only dispassionately agree with everything you have to say in this video. I have seen DCS rise over the years; in both popularity and in features only hoping for polish and proportionate reprimand to the countless bugs and lacking features in the game. But as the title has made its way through 2018 and now 2019, I can only but realise that the business model that ED has integrated into its simulator is slowly killing this title. As you said, Persistent "release" of Beta testing or "early access" titles just to keep their financial vault sufficient enough to survive, is what is simply ruining the platform. Having bought the F/A-18C (which don't get me wrong, has come a long way since its early access release in 2018) and most recently: the F-16C - my interpretation of this business structure has only become more suffice. Thanks for making this video, this is what the customers of DCS want to say and have been saying for years. It's good to know that someone with a pretty large media stature has the same opinion. Thanks X-check.

Bloody good video. In fact we were discussing this very topic on Hoggit. Right now, there are only two things that keep me in DCS: 1) VR 2) Carrier Landings in the F18. And maybe some Harrier flying. As soon as Falcon BMS gets VR support I'll be out of there. I have completed many F4 campaigns in my day and the missions you get involved in are incredible. I had one where we were flying CAS from our frontline airport, only to have said airport attacked from both the ground and the air! In the end I had to improvise and then divert to an airport we still owned. Plus, not many people realise that you can order your ground units around in F4, just like a wargame :) I'm a software developer. I know that to make anything like F4's dynamic campaign would be really hard and costly. In fact there is only one other game that I can think of that came close and that is Total Air War. But even then, F4's campaign blows it into the weeds. When you fly F4 you really feel like a small cog in a much bigger war. The radio chatter and emerging situations make it so immersive. I would still be with it, but VR came along. Once you have flown with a decent VR headset (I use the Vive Pro), it is impossible to go back - the difference is night and day (I actually have a few DCS VR videos on my channel including an F18 cold start, carrier landing and then shutdown). DCS doesn't have to implement a dynamic campaign - at least not in the sense of F4 - though I would really like them to. They could, instead, make the other kind of dynamic campaign that consists of randomly generated missions within the framework of a war - such as IL2 Stalingrad. This would go a long way toward removing the clinical feel of DCS. It would give players a reason to go back rather than having to do a bunch of fixed missions. That said, I did hear a rumour that fellow You-Tuber BunyAp got hired by DCS after he wrote one of the WW2 campaigns. Apparently, they hired him to work on some kind of dynamic campaign system for DCS....

I 100% agree with you about them doing a lot for the simulation side, but nothing for the experience side. I can drop hundreds of dollars on modules, spend dozens of hours learning the modules, and then what? Air-Quake? Running pointless single missions in single or multiplayer until I get bored? A good, working dynamic campaign, including one that works in multiplayer, would instantly solve a lot my issues with DCS, and give me more incentive to spend money and time on the sim. Flight sims used to be my favorite game genre, but I've been practically out of the hobby entirely since about 2010. Only the Heatblur F-14 and DCS's free month have drawn me back in for another attempt. My previous opinion on DCS was, it sure is pretty to look at, but a real bitch to try and play. And module prices are ridiculous. The F-14, F-18, and F-16 all cost over $105 Australian when not on sale. (Steam pricing) You can often get nearly TWO full price games on Steam for the price of one of those planes, assuming the publishers aren't assholes with their pricing. $50-60 Australian, I could live with, considering how much work goes into making the modules, but $100+ for one? GTFO with that pricing. Especially when some of those modules release in horrible states, and stay in beta with missing features for years after release.

yeah, your problems also start from the fact that you're "buying an early access module to support the simulator's development" You know what doesn't make a company productive? Paying them before they've even completed the product. by trying to "support the simulator's development" you're basically giving them no reason to feel any urgency. They will not feel the need to deliver a product on time to a paying customer because the customer has already paid them. Early access is a nice format to allow developers to basically use their playerbase as beta testers, but any use beyond that is just straight abuse. I got the f/a-18c because i wanted to try a naval plane and everything involved in that. but now that i have it and it has enough function to it i'm not going to give them any more money for these new Early Access modules, because i don't want to give them the idea that they can just vomit a WIP product for $80 and i'll just throw my money at them.

Did they listen? *Dynamic Campaign: We now have a basic test version that works within DCS World to evaluate the real-time strategy element of the system. We are using this to debug the system. In parallel, work is now underway on the UI interface and the AI machine learning code. This is complex and is receiving a lot of focus at the moment.*

It would be really cool if you could do a video on IL2 and all its versions over the years. I started playing IL2 on the Pacific Fighters expansion as a stand alone when I was really young back in 2004. Soooo many hours in those dynamic campaigns. A couple years ago they had the classic IL2 on sale on Steam with all its expansions and I leapt at it. Best money I ever spent, and here I am in 2019 flying the crap out of a 2004 simulator and loving it. I'm a little confused though about the versions that came after, to the point where I don't even know which one is the one they are developing now. A quick note on the history - Spectrum Holobyte developed/published the original Falcon for the PC, arguably the first 'realistic' combat flight sim, Falcon AT, Falcon 3.0, along with many other simulators. Microprose developed Falcon 4.0 because they purchased the holding company of Spectrum Holobyte, Sphere, Inc. So while they did publish Tetris, that wasn't the extent of what they did.

Man, this video has so many true and undeniable facts in it already. I double down on the topic of the night scene lighting issue. I totally gave up on trying to create night missions. And I would add to that topic the evident fact that ALL of the airports and airbases are always so empty, dark and lifeless that it completely breaks the immersion of playing a FLIGHT SIMULATOR, and it has always frustrated me that, after so many years, there are still no ground crew/staff walking and driving by, you know... like.... actual airport staff working... And this issue also apply to the Carriers. I can CLEARLY remember when ED posted tech demos of the flight deck crew with WIP animations being done, supposed to be added in a "near future" to the Stennis carrier. Not to mention the long ago promised reworked Kuznetsov carrier 3D model, that we saw when they reworked the Flight and Systems Model for the SU-33 Flanker. From time to time we can see renders of the Flankers taking off or landing on the Kuznetsov, with a BEAUTIFUL high-detail 3D model... But they never even bothered putting it in the actual sim. And speaking of human characters animations, this is another point where DCS (but, to be fair and honest, EVERY other flight sim also has this same flaw) leaves much to be desired. The only module that did an reasonably decent job in terms of pilot animations was the F-14 Tomcat (Kudos to Heatblur for this masterpiece of a module). Your pilot behaves and moves like a freaking ROBOT. On the other hand, I must leave a compliment to ED for applying the idea of being able to control your pilot AFTER you ejected and landed on ground. This has led me to some PRICELESS pearls, and some nice screenshots next to my aircraft. If you eject (Ctrl+E 3 times) from a grounded and stationary Mustang for instance, you can play and walkaround your aircraft and get some cool pictures. But all of the other character animations have WAY too much ground to cover in order to achieve a convincing realism. Infantry moving, walking, running, crouching, going prone, getting cover, being tossed away from explosions, embarking and disembarking from transport vehicles, ground crew (if there even was any) rearming, refueling and repairing our aircrafts, and et cetera.... These things would be really awesome to watch, and would provide such a great level of detail for the DCS movie makers out there. All of this would turn DCS into a DREAM coming true for us.

Brilliant video! I share your passion for the game and I started with Flanker 1.0 myself! And while I love it, it also hurts me to see what a mess it is. I appreciate the need for Early Access model to generate money but ED need to fix the core to maintain and grow the user base. Right now, IMHO, people are interested because of how shiny and deep it is. And we fly it because of .. as you said it ... the ultimate satisfaction it provides! But every few months, the old open bugs get on our nerves and we feel the need to visit the forums, and type carefully worded messages for ED. Eventually though, someone else will enter the market and take the user-base away.

I whole-heartedly agree with everything you have said in this video. When I started with DCS in 2008-09 in V.1.2 I loved just about everything about DCS. I turned a few friends onto it even. They gave up on it long ago because it was too complex for their flight sim needs. I have stuck with DCS until only recently. This summer, I played online 3 times for 1 hour each time over the course of 6+ Months. The last flight was fun, but I'm tired of shit not working that used to work perfectly fine until a "fuckupdate" was released and fucked everything up (stuff that has ZERO relevance to anything they/ED were working on) . I stopped buying Modules a couple years ago although I did get the F-18. Yet I have not even sat in the cockpit yet. I've spent many hours in the Harrier and have only gotten more frustrated with it. It was great when it was released. It's far to busted and/or incomplete for me to waste my time learning in it now. DCS and the 3rd Party Developers have ultimately made me turn back to other, more fulfilling hobbies that have less wasted expense. As much as I have yearned for a good flight sim (since Jane's Longbow 1 and 2), I have recently become so disappointed with all the money I have spent on shit that doesn't work. I/We have spent a shit-ton of money to be ED's PAYING Beta-Testers. What's up with that ? So here I am 10 years into DCS + Thousands of $$ and countless hours of training, learning and fighting, and now I can hardly bring myself to click on it's Icon, knowing I'm apt to only get frustrated and/or pissed-off and won't touch it for another few months .... only to get the same results. WTG DCS. You've turned me into a hater and the opposite of a promoter. And I don't think anything is going to get much better any time soon. And at almost 60 years of age, I'm not too hopeful that I'll ever see DCS become what it should already have become.

You missed a couple of points in there. The DCS 2.0 update was free and was actually a pretty great update. The other part which was glaringly omitted was the single non-aircraft module that makes DCS a combat simulator rather than a flight simulator, that module being Combined Arms. Now that is a steaming pile of shit in module form if ever there was one. I agree with your sentiments regarding the broken module issues currently being flung out the door, but this IMO shows a greater issue than that or simple alienation. Don't forget that Eagle Dynamics is a business, something that you don't really touch on in this video. I have suggested a subscriber 'opt-in' business model for years where by people would get a single vote per month/quarter (possibly more depending on the 'subscriber level') that they could spend on a particular item in the roadmap/bug list. People who pay for this would get discounts on modules etc but it is largely a directed funds injection on the things the community feel are important. I think it would do two things that are very badly needed atm. 1. Funds injection that is not module related. 2. An ability for the company to gauge the level of frustration regarding a particular module / feature. This would need to be quite transparent, i.e. understanding how much money is being given and a clearly visible idea on what effort is being spent on each of the issues being worked on. The importance of a subscription based system cant be underestimated, but other than having a say in the prioritisation of development and maybe a shiny badge in the forum there is nothing no pay to win bs. It is a simple direction of funds to fix current game issues without the need of giving the community some half baked new shiny thing. Anyway, good video, but it was a little negative. But thanks for starting the conversation. OzDM OuT

Thank you for pointing that out! Tbh, I do not own Combined Arms as it seems of not much value, so I couldn't really comment on it.

@@XCHECK I'm actually ok with Combined Arms in DCS. I've played Arma 3 briefly, and while also not a perfect simulator, I've always wonder what it would be like to combine the DCS flight simulation with playable detailed ground operations. Arma 3's aircraft are basically arcade quality, but the ground and soldier simulation is quite fun. I'm not sure if both communities would come together, but its an interesting fantasy to sim "total war". From a business perspective DCS is going to have to refine the ground war part of the game too. Eventually the early/first release aircraft revenue is going to dry up. In not so many years they are going to have every unclassified modern aircraft/helo that people are interested in buying in the simulator. I own the A-10C, P-51D, AV-8B and F-14. Honestly, only the F-16 and maybe the AH-1 are even in consideration for purchase. Big bombers, trainers and cargo craft aren't going to sell enough to keep the company going in 10 years. I don't know about you, but I can only learn so many aircraft with my full time life. ....Also I've decided not to buy the F-16 until it appears done.... I would bet others are doing the same... So that's delayed cash for ED right now. The problem here seems to be running a business and making money. Customer service, focused initiatives/projects and quality of your product are huge. Especially with a program this massive. Matt Wagner seems to do a good job with communicating to the western customers. He recently addressed that a dynamic campaign is under development for 2021. Instead of a competitor, what if a western investor bought ED and with fresh management and capitol invested in this product? There is a lot of good work in DCS, it would seem pretty challenging to start from scratch with a competitive product. Would make more sense to fix the quality issues in DCS, continue to develop the features the community desires (dynamic), possibly branch out into other military sim areas (navel/ground) and figure out a long term approach to revenue (monthly subscription?). Sorry for the long post :)

Great video! I'm so glad someone finally speaks the truth about combat sims today. Remember the good old days of Microprose and Spectrum Holobyte sims that came with giant manuals and were actually complete upon release? Let's make flight sims great again!

I love DCS and I share alot of your view points. If this sim did not have potential the forums would be silent. Passionate people who see potential in things they love have a strong voice sometimes. Thats a good thing because it shows we still have faith and hope for ED and DCS. This SIM is much more than a game. Its a hobby and passion for aviators and aviation lovers all over the world. The core SIM needs to be updated and a ground breaking dynamic multiplayer online campaign needs to be thought out and seriously developed. I too buy modules im not very interested in like the F-16. I do it to support the further development and financial stability of Eagle Dynamics who has the potential to make this SIM great! Because without them, Our hobbies and dreams are lost as well. For as much time as I've studied and practiced with these aircraft. I feel like a football player who trains and practices constantly but has no game day or Superbowl to compete for and put all the training and studying to use. This is why a polished official online dynamic mulytiplayer environment must be created! As a person below commented. Creating mission in DCS is like planning a surprise party for yourself and your the only one attending. Its pointless!

I must be one of the oldest DCS players, I am a 63 year old retired Paramedic (Had to retire after injury in work several years ago) I learnt how to build my own PC, a few PC's l;ater and my current gaming machine has Haswell I7 cpu, 16gb RAM , 1tb SSD and a 4TB HD, 2X Nvidia 1070's (in SLI) Gigabyte MB, 850watt Corsair modular PSU in a Corsair case. Okay, it's not the most up to date but it suffices plus my NHS pension although 'alright' it certainly means i have to count the pennies! Always enjoyed anything aviation related, used to have thje old 'micrpose european airwars'(WW2 sim on my swin98 machine) I then progressed to Microsoft Combat sim (it was again a ww2 sim 'game') and then I discovered DCS and WOW...but...it is not the most intuitive game to learn, or, was that my 'mature' years you know, the 'you can't teach an old dog new tricks' anyway I persevered and even treated myself to the thrustmaster HOTAS joystick/throttle! And now? well I still get 'lost' sometimes or perhaps I fail to appreciate some 'minor' oddity and fail to progress! It was so refreshing and informative to watch your video! Ultimately it made me realise that DCS is what it is , i.e. Utterly brilliant but flawed too! I write this in November 2020, we are in the second phase of the horrible pandemic, one i would not to well should I succumb to it (age plus co-morbidity, hypertension etc) If you are reading this and this terrible diseased is still ongoing, please take care and stay safe everyone
