Hi from Britland! I was stationed at RAF Wildenrath West Germany from 1978 to 1981. 19 and 92 sqds based there had Phantom FGR 2s but we used to get a lot of visiting F4Es our VASF guys (Visiting Aircraft Servicing Flight) would ground crew for. They would scramble from a running start (that is not at cockpit readiness crew had to run to the aircraft) and would be airborne from the HAS in under 4 minutes (close to half of that time!). A mate of mine was on VASF and told me they could even beat Battle Flight into the air because of the "shortcuts" they took!!! btw the F4E crews loved working with our guys because of the, let's say "unconventional" way they worked...! Sometimes the manual is there purely for guidance purposes only...!!! Any ex F4 drivers out there like to comment...? Nice video, very nostalgic for me 👍

I see a lot of people talking about the noxious fumes but one of the few real life cartridges start of the F-4E that's on youtube happens around a crowd of people, with the canopies open..

That’s true funny enough… maybe the Germans are crazy haha 🤣 but the USAF -1 manual does say don’t breathe this stuff haha

We do not even have a VA that could determine that your lung being liquid is not service related. So as a German lawyer, I don't see a problem here.

I mostly have seen Phantoms taxiing with Canopies open prior take off. Thus I wonder why to close them before I do anything else?
@Ticbow4 ай бұрын
I think in those circumstances they will have done a regular start using an external air source instead of a cartridge start, or it's possible that the noxious fumes are gone by the time the jet is taxiing??

Thank you for your video! Quick question. You said, during the engine start, when the light dissapears we can release the ignition swith located in the throttle. Where exactly is that light so I know when to release it? Thank you again!
@corvobatarin67856 ай бұрын
To go even faster, you can flip on both generators and start both engines more or less simultaneously. Not by the books, but faster.

In fairness to Spud, this was probably recorded days ago and therefore wasn't affected by whatever bug prevented today's release. It sucks we have to wait another day, I agree, but it is what it is and I'm glad there's a decent and user-friendly startup tutorial out there already.

I always get a giggle when I hear Pop music from the late 60's and early 70's whenever there is a Vietnam era weapon system/operation in a movie/simulation/game. Those pilots saw themselves as old west cowboys/gunfighters/sheriffs... not rock and roll hippies of the time. They even wore spurs on their flying boots. Country and Western was what they listened to in their spare time/driving to and from the ramp.
@Spudknocker7 ай бұрын
Hahaha I know right? My grandfather who flew in Vietnam HATED 60’s and 70’s rock and roll he was all about Herb Alpert, the ventures etc haha kinda funny! But not it’s just become the cultural zeitgeist

@@Spudknocker Love that old music too, wholesome and calming stuff. Just what you need to be a cool hand in the cockpit. Platoon was a great movie, but it's sound track was not accurate at all. Love your tutorials on the Phantom lately, keep up the great work!

@debbiestimac51757 ай бұрын
FYI, advancing the throttles to mid throttle and then back to idle before hitting the cartridge or engaging the huffer is so you know the throttle linkage to those big J79's is moving freely and not bound up/needs grease/adjustment. Just like how you sweep the control surfaces before moving the jet out of it's parking spot. You don't want to get any one of them jammed in burner/wrong setting for the flight regime and not be able to retard them for landing, prevent overspeeding the jet, etc.
@Sovereign_UK7 ай бұрын
I would also like to add, holding the ignition switch down before the engine start would destroy the igniters. It's not implemented as of yet, but it will be.
@Spudknocker7 ай бұрын
Absolutely! Just can’t have every explanation in every video haha
@debbiestimac51757 ай бұрын
@@Spudknocker Oh, I'm just putting out there for the kids that think it does anything to the FCS, set a switch or something. I'm pretty sure most have never touched a choke cable on a carbureted engine except maybe for a lawn mower. Those J-79s were very analog in operation, a wonder of engineering IMO.
