Beautiful view on your planes spraying "chemtrails" all over Korea. I think I agree with an US pilot who said, he would rather use a piece of chewing gum to aim than the quite useless gun radar. Closer to the ground the pipper is jumping around like a puppy. That was a quite interesting campaign, but I like the prop stuff much more; it´s more personal.

jets could take a lot of .50 cal hits, a major reason all fighters went to cannons. on running low on ammo, back in WW2, at least one US fighter group would put all of the tracers at the end of the ammo belts, typically about 250 rounds. This served as a visual indicator to the pilot that he was low on ammo. Once, however this backfired in a way. The author of the story I read was flying a P47 belonging to the squadron CO, and that individual had his aircraft loaded with 500 rounds of tracer at the end of the ammo belts. He was in a situation where at the end of a long battle he saw the tracers and, assuming he was low on ammo, broke off the fight. He stated that had he known he had 500 rounds per gun left he would have felt more confident in engaging the German fighter and finishing him off.

I think there was a WW2 P47 ace (maybe Francis Grabeski?) who said he did not want any tracer rounds loaded in his plane because when he would sneak behind an enemy plane and fired he did not want the pilot to see the tracers which would alert him that he was being fired on. I may be wrong though.

@@Madlou no, I think you are right. Robert Johnson in his book, "Thunderbolt!", said something similar and that they could see the hits one the enemy plane which was enough. Looking at WW2 gun camera footage from any nation seems to confirm this. Bomber crew gunners OTOH did use tracers as "normal" which would have been 1 tracer and 4 other rounds

Great how the game programmed for the red nose Mig to be nearly unbeatable in the weather and it ends up beating itself. Always hated flight sims where they made the final boss do impossible maneuvers and really braindead tactics, flying in horrible weather and going at it solo.

I don't understand what's going on with the gunsights in this aircraft. The cannons are fixed, why do you need a sight that moves around and seems to constantly be in the wrong place?

It's a radar gunsight. The cross hairs are moving to compensate for range, speed and aircraft manoeuvres, assuming it's not being effected by ground clutter.

@@forcea1454 That makes more sense. So the right thing to do would be try to put the crosshairs on the target and let the radar do the leading? Do you know how effective this system was? I flew the OH-58D where our gunsight was a grease pencil mark on the windscreen, and flew missions with Apaches who had a computer that did all the calculations for them which seemed very effective.

@@jasonhall10 I don't have any hard information, to anecdotally it's reputation seems to be mixed. Some pilot's used it, others caged the gyroscope inside it and used it as a fixed reflector sight. In-game however, there seems to be a bug, with the sight being consistently inaccurate, and said bug still seems to be present in complaints in forum posts as of April 2021.
