I agree with posters saying this show is a little off. I've noticed places where the band wasn't quite with Toby, Toby flubbing lyrics, Kevin failing to break a drumstick on his knee and then going awol on verse 2 of JF. Just kinda trainwrecky. But, I will say that not-great DCT show is still better than other people's best efforts.

I think the tension was between Kevin and Toby. Michael gets along with both of them so I'm guessing he was the peacekeeper in the group.
@jmspiers3 жыл бұрын
I suspect it was technical issues, not conflict. At one point Toby was signaling aggressively for some of the musicians to slow it down. In a couple of other places they were talking over each other. I noticed that Kevin was also spending a lot of time in one particular side of the stage, way out by the speakers. I suspect he was having problems with his in ear monitor. I'm a drummer. I don't play professionally, but I used to play at some large Pentecostal churches that were so loud that people in the congregation could not talk. What non-musicians don't understand is that in an environment like that the people on the platform hear just one thing: their monitor. And, they don't hear everything in their monitor. They have it mixed so that they can hear the things that are most important to them. I would usually mix my monitor so that the bass and worship leader were much louder than anything else. The speakers and everything else is pointed at the audience. The people performing do not hear what the audience hears. In a concert with 3 lead vocalists, if even one of them is having technical problems then it is VERY hard to be cohesive. I am not saying there was not conflict, but in this case I think it was technical issues, nothing more.

I grew up in the 1990s bible belt as DC Talk was at their height. Saw them at my 1st concert ever in Pensacola 1992 and Atlanta Fest Six Flags in 1995. Even as evangelicalism waines their music is still deep in my heart and mind. I wanted them to reunite for years but you can't go home again. The young girls screams are the same as secular music - the undercurrent of sexuality was a big draw even though Protestantism teaches wait til marriage. Their CDs were huge in my teenagehood and I'll always give them a listen.

The song "In the Light" was written by a guy who worked with Bono on a one-world gathering as well. The lyrics are actually all about the false light of lucifier if you read carefully and know about the occult. I'm working on an exposé on dc talk and it's filled to the gills with horrible stuff, FYI.

Okay last commentt, but Im not sure why some people are saying the show was sloppy. It wasn't sloppy but there was obvious disharmony within the group--you'd only know it if you were a fan. Kevin got off during Jesus Freak and then Michael and Tobey covered it up and Michael ended up doing the "people say Im strange, does it make me a stranger" part cuz Kevin just wasn't in synch. Then during Our God is an Awesome God, Tobey had to silence Kevin. Kevs was doing a ton of adlibs and just doing his own thing. I think there was a rift between him and Tobey around this time and Michael was trying to be the middle man. I don't know. But yeah the "hiatus" came shortly after LOLOLOLOL.
@jmspiers3 жыл бұрын
I think it was just technical issues. I've seen it at other shows. Toby was also acting frustrated with the musicians at one point. I saw DC Talk 3 times during this era, and Kevin Max always performed the same way. Vocal riffs, ad libbing, etc. There might have been conflict in the band, but I doubt Toby was upset at the way Kevin was acting. Edit: Their concerts were the best I've been to for any genre of music, Christian or secular. They were definitely perfectionists and put 100% into every show. I think Toby was definitely frustrated that things weren't clicking.
