I've been a residential carpenter my entire life and really enjoy it. I mean, I loved my job. Building is so fun to me, and I made a decent living at it. I got very impressed watching a woman frame this floating dock. You rock gal! I cannot frame houses anymore, due to being paralyzed, but I still build a lot of stuff. From decks to birdhouses, to muzzle loaders and muzzle loader accoutrements. Is not building just really fun and rewarding there gal?

This is the best video yet! That's exactly what I'll be doing for a fishing raft. Mine will be 4' X 8' for the same reason... Using dimensional lumber w/ minimal cutting. My deck will be marine plywood w/ outdoor carpeting.

Thanks so much for the video! We did this today for our (small, freshwater) pond and it's awesome. Me (handsome athletic stud) and my son (14 skinny disaffected) managed the whole project. We built the frame and dragged half of it into the pond, got the barrels in / under, and started laying decking down. Then pushed the rest into the pond and - with an extra barrel for flotation, got the other barrels in there. I HAVE NO IDEA how anyone could build this on the ground and then push it into the water without an army ... The lumber weighs a ton, but the $10 barrels we found online from a (literal) crackhead work like a champ ... My truck was riding Low-Low on the way home from the lumber store ... crazy. All said and done, once you have the materials, this is actually a 4 (four) hour project. Sooooo cool! We have many more "Pond-Days" in our future - many thanks!

Important to use screws,not nails. As a youngster we built a diving platform. The wave action and stress of use by groups of us would cause nail heads to work their way above the surface. These cause quite a bit of injury to your wet feet, tearing holes in the bottoms. Having no screws back then we just hammered them back down again often and roughed it.

Nice job on the dock and keeping it simple and easy. One thing I’d suggest based off my dock experience is to rotate the barrels so the bung openings are parallel to the water to avoid any possible filling of them. I also used plumbers tape to seal the bungs. Huh huh yes I said bung. 😂

I have built a dock and a couple rafts with 55 gallon plastic drums. I learned some things, the hard way. You want to seal the drums in the middle of your temperature difference. For MN sealing the drums at 30 degrees works good. The first dock sections I sealed the drums at warmer temperatures and in the winter they caved in some, so I drilled a small hole in one cap above the waterline, but somehow they still can fill with water. So seal in cooler temps. You can't have too much floatation. My first dock / raft had drums has 12sf per barrel, my last has near solid drums at 6.55sf per barrel. There is no such thing as too many drums.

Fun project. Couple things, barrels are cheap, load it up. Leave space between blocking and barrels... if they need draining over time getting them out and in that tight space is a headache. Use framing nails, not deck screws as the screws are weak and will break over time. Screws for decking only.

Thank you so much for an awesome DIY video. You make it look so easy. You’ve given me the inspiration to build a floating dock this weekend at my friend’s cottage following your exact plan except, I’m planning for 3 barrels on either side to a total of 6. I’m a little confused as to why you cut 2 of the joists at 117 inches to arrive at an exact square of 10’ x 10’ since the boards have a 2” thickness. Also, now that you’ve been enjoying your dock for some time, do you recommend any changes to your plan that I should incorporate? 🙏
@dcwoodworks4 жыл бұрын
I am so glad you got inspired! the reason I did that is because the 10 foot boards are 120 inches long and I wanted a perfect square(and not to have to cut the deck boards because the come at 120 inches also) so I had to subtract 3 inches (1.5 for each butt joint x 2) to account for and then when put against the other 120" joists they now are 120 in length (1.5 x 2), does that make sense? also we are finally getting some great weather here in Nova Scotia so I cant complain!
@UdishWijay4 жыл бұрын
That’s exactly what I understood it to be but I calculated 4” (2” for each butt joint x 2) based on your list in the description. I just wanted to confirm if I got the reasoning right and you’ve answered my question. Thank you so much, Denika! I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to all the queries. Keep making great videos. You rock!

Did your dad get you into building? There are some very successful women contractors in America. You would make a great one. It's so much better to work for yourself, not stuck indoors, and make so much more money than a regular 9 to 5 or office job too. You should consider becoming one because everybody cannot think like us, but you surely do. Builders picture things in their minds differently from normal people and you definitely have that trait. What's the max amount of people you have had on it? Does the weight have to be balanced on it or does it stay fairly level?
@dcwoodworks4 жыл бұрын
We have had 7 people on here and it barely looses height above water, anymore people and it would just not fit us but probably still float. I completely under estimated how many can go on, it's impressive. The only time I found it was unbalanced is if one or two people are on a corner but even then it just tips slightly and might "sink" 6-8 inches so I would say it balances really well.
@manmeetslady1507 Жыл бұрын
You could have put couple more on it to to give make it more stability on all four sides you did a good job 👍🤔 and only thing that's missing is a little ladder so you can climb up on when a person stands on it it shouldn't not dip that much in the water like it is that's why I say it put a couple more underneath to give it more stability it would be a lot better you have extra 👍🆒✅
@dcwoodworks Жыл бұрын

Can you use 2x6 instead of 2x8 to lessen the weight and cost?

How much weight can this support/Does anyone know roughly how much weight any given number of barrels can support? Either way awesome video thank you!

A little late, but it's just water volume displacement. The weight of water the barrel will hold is the weight the barrel will support. A 2 foot by 3 foot barrel (Actually 23"x35") holds 14541 cubic inches of water. Convert that to 238 Liters makes it 238 Kg of displacement, or 523 Lbs. But that's fully submerged - you likely want to build your dock or platform so the barrels are less than half submerged. Two reasons for that - one, the little openings at the end of the barrel can remain above water most of the time. You'll seal them, but better to have them above water anyway. The second reason is that if your platform naturally floats with your barrel less than half under, as you step on it, the water line on the barrel is still getting wider as it sinks, meaning it won't dip as much as if you only had 1/4 of the barrel out of the water. So for every vertical inch it sinks, you're getting the maximum buoyancy support because the water line is at the widest part of the barrel. Sorry for mixed units, I'm Canadian so it's metric for everything important and inches for construction.

How much do you think this would cost today in the U.S.? Trying to decide whether to built it myself or buy a used one. Thanks for the video.

I’m not sue about USD but in Canadian today it would be about 700$. Hope that helps! Lumber has gone up so much

Were the barrels already sealed and watertight? Or did you have to do anything to them to make them watertight?
@dcwoodworks3 жыл бұрын
Good question, They were already sealed!

Would be better with nice protection of paint, in one year the dock will be needing repairs, congratulatíons per service.

We’re actually on year three and it’s in great condition. It floats above the water because I didn’t put water in the barrels first. So it will last a while

DC Woodworks - Is the dock difficult to remove from the water when storing for winter? I'm planning to make my own in a couple of months. Our house is on the Cuyahoga River and I'm excited to see how this works! Already have 6 barrels...now just need the wood!
@dcwoodworks2 жыл бұрын
Its definitely difficult! but with 3 - 4 people its no problem at all.

oh no! I hope you were able to build something to replace it! I got my barrels from a local buy and sell. did you find any?
