I don't remember if anyone mentioned in the stream, but when Tom thought a Highland Ben was preserved (he was probably thinking of Glen Douglas), one of the Highland Small Bens was set aside for preservation. Ben Alder was stored at Wick for about 12 years, but was sadly cut up in 1967 or 68 for reasons I don't know

Right on both counts for your speculation on the more odd features. The louvers on the chimney, from what I've seen in research, were indeed a form of smoke deflection just as you said; as the train moved along, air would be drawn into those louvers and would help lift the smoke up and over the cab. Regarding the positioning of the driving wheels, I believe you're right again that it was largely to make room for the firebox. It may also have been to help with maneuverability; I believe the rearmost driving axle was designed to be able to shift side to side when rounding curves, thus allowing the engine to go around much sharper curves than if it had a more fixed wheelbase with the drivers more evenly spaced. It's a feature seen pretty commonly on American 4-6-0 Ten-Wheelers of that same period, most famously on Sierra Railroad No.3, the type upon which the Jones Goods was based. Basically, what worked in California could also work in Caledonia. Also right about the Stroudley livery. Stroudley worked for the Highland Railway for a brief time and experimented with this livery there. When he transferred to the LBSCR he kept the livery concept, slightly darkening the yellow to be more gold-orange but otherwise changing very little, which became the famous Improved Engine Green we know today.

6:10, the extended wheelbase with the setback rear axle is indeed for the firebox. It is a classic rural 4-6-0 and sometimes 2-8-0 or 4-8-0 design. 4-6-0s from Africa to USA can be seen with this design to allow for a fire box, dampers, and ash pan to stick down.

Of all the liveries, my favorite livery for the Jones Goods is the Drummond Green with red cylinders. It reminds me of a lighter version of Great Central green. Actually, come to think of it, I like this much better than GCR Dark Green, or any other color green for that matter.

Good video, just to point out that the 4 Preserved Scottish region engines that were restored in the 60s were The Jones Goods, The Caley Single, Gordon Highlander and Glen Douglas. The Small Ben was set aside for preservation but was scrapped in 1966 as it did not have the original Highland boiler.

That Ben was No. 54398 Ben Alder (Highland Railway No. 2). She was withdrawn in 1953 as the last survivor of her class. She was stored at several sheds, including Inverness and Boat-of-Garten. Thankfully, there is a replica planned of the loco with her original boiler.

Anyone else think that this would be amazing in TDRS? Maybe for Zeke's heavy goods initiative perhaps?

The Jones Goods is truly a marvel. I adore the new weathering technique, striking the perfect balance between careworn and clean. I wish more devs would put such care into their texturing (*cough*Victory Works*cough*). I also found that this is an engine with character; standing on her own she looks pretty beefy, but she's actually quite small, yet surprisingly powerful and fast. The new HR wagons are a very nice touch as well, especially the new brake van; shame the interior is all blacked out and there's no head-out passenger view for it, but oh well not a deal-killer. And once more the new weathering is fantastic on these. I only have a couple bits of criticism about it, and even those I feel are pretty much nit-picks that should not reflect too badly on the model as a whole: 1. I don't like the spacebar whistle; the loop is pretty far off, starting with a good 1-2 second delay after pressing the spacebar and cutting off instantly when released. This is more than compensated for by the excellent variety of B key whistles, including at least one very long one. So in this case, not so big a deal, just wish the looping whistle could have been done a bit better. But I understand looping whistles are hard. 2. Is it just me, or is the driver's view camera position in the cab feel... off somehow? Like, it's right behind the reverser lever, in fact clipping into the reverser in some positions, and it feels just a bit too high. I dunno, might be imagining things. Or might be the way the cab is. Just something about that position that feels... off somehow, not sure how best to explain it. 3. For every little detail added, like the dripping water from the injector drains, it kinda felt like there was another detail missing; the driving wheel cranks don't rotate through the coupling rods as they do on a lot of the CR engines; rather, they're part of the coupling rods themselves. I didn't think most folks, especially me, would even notice something that subtle, but I did. Also, a few control positions were off, like how the handbrake command was halfway across the fireman's side of the cab and nowhere near the brake wheel. Again, none of these are big things, and a lot of them might go back to this engine being near-complete several months ago, held up waiting for Sam of BPP to make the HR decals for the tender. All told though, I do not regret for a moment pre-ordering this beauty and getting my hands on her. She's a marvel and will be getting a lot more use from me in future.

It was definitely similar to Stroudley's LB&SCR livery, as he introduced it first onto the HR in 1865, Jones continued it until around 1884. So really the Jones goods would never have worn it, no idea why 103 was repainted into the yellow but the bright banana shade isn't correct really
