Point 3 and 4 hit me like a truck, like damn, you really called me out, I really got to say that this video is an eye opener man, so I got to thank you for the great video. For the longest time I was so scared to draw female characters because of how horrendously bad my comprehension of their anatomy was so I just didn’t draw them, but now I’ve started practicing and I can see I’m starting to get better the more I practice. I got to thank you man, you’re a real inspiration and I wish you the best on your crusade to becoming the best.

Yay new video! Also it took me 5-6 years to get to the level I am at now. It's not what people call "professional" yet, but I am going to towards it. Number 3 hit me hard. Honestly, I already know that's why I'm having trouble improving. It's hard as an artist to see someone better than you, to see someone progress faster than you. When I see that blank canvas and try to draw something I'm bad at, it's like confronting yourself that you're below your own expectations :((

Thanks for this video. It was very enlightening and encouraging. I will confess, my drawing of hands is still a little wonky but I am improving. I WANT to improve, mainly because a lot of my characters use their hands. One draws objects and animals to life, the other does bloodbending and another does sign language. So, getting the hands right is important to me.

i say doing both is good cause when you do a drawing or colored illustration you get to practically apply what you study. when you apply your studies in your illustration, you'll make a mistake then you can learn from that mistake and then not make it next time. the process of study, practice, fail, learn from failure and repeat is the best! hope that helps

I just want to ask a question. When you say repeatedly drawing the head do you mean you Drew it with the Loomis method in different angels or did you fill your sketch books with heads from your favorite mangas? Cus i am not going to lie this video does motivate me to do better and not be lazy. But i am in the dark a bit when it comes to what to draw. If that makes sense. I mean that should i copy tite kubo and murata to learn from them when it comes to heads or just draw the head using a guideline like the Loomis method? Its a bit confusing not gonna lie. 😮 Think i am having a problem with nr 2 and a bit of 3. Not really scared of trying new things. Just not confident in my ability to pull it of. And i will say you forgot nr5 which is "fundamentals" alot of people myself included are avoiding this. Because fundamentals are boring as hell. 😅 One last question DD Mark. Should i copy a reference several times before moving on to the next one or do one of each in succession? Might be a dumb question but there it is.

The first one I always do, when I show my art to a friend or another artist I always want to know what I did wrong instead of what I did right because if I always hear the good then how am I suppose to fix the bad. Harsh criticism is the best thing for an artist to improve in my opinion but, the 2nd and 3rd I hate to admit it to myself but I'm telling myself anyways wether I like it or not...they are a problem for me. I am going to become a Mangaka someday and publish my manga so the world way read and hopefully watch as it becomes an anime but my art is far from the top of where I want to be and the 2nd and 3rd points hold me back. I wasn't taught how to draw faces and body's correctly and I am not sure what method works for me yet and the backgrounds especially creating a new background for my manga it takes me too long to think and I hate that, I've had a character model all done but she doesn't have any clothes on, I'm trying to make every one if my characters (main and side characters) who are important to my manga unique and different but it takes me a while to know what they look like and what their clothes are. I'm trying to improve the speed at which to draw and think of the characters design and perfect clothing that match each character (if there is any advise you can give me it will help alot) and last the 3rd one. For some it's not hard to discipline yourself but to others it's a battle in your mind. What I mean by that is I'm always telling myself that I need to practice hands and faces as well as backgrounds and especially details like shading and I do, I do practice but then you loose that grip on the rope and you fall not doing what you said you are doing, for me I'm always holding on to the rope with one hand trying to hold on and keep pushing because a person in my head is always saying "If you want to become a Mangaka then you got to keep going and don't loose hope, you may think that your not good as the others but they had hard practice and time they spent practicing, you can do it to...your manga that you love to make... it's not going to happen if you give up, a thing is only impossible if you say it's impossible but if you continue to push through and reach for that goal that you want to become then it's closer than you think." I'm 19 years old and I have 2 mangas in the making though I'm focusing on my first one but still putting any ideas that I get down for the 2nd manga. I still have a long way to go to become the artist that I want to become, self motivation is rough but sometimes I find something to motivate me to keep going, I always think that my characters are right behind me helping me along the way. I need alot of practice and I would love to get intouch with other artists and ask any advise and learn from others to improve myself. I know this is long but I thank you for this video, it has really shown and told me that there are problems right infront of me that I need to fix to improve. I will be going to a manga/art and design school in Japan to at least get more experience and knowledge which I'm excited for. It may be years like 2 or 3 before my manga is published and serialized but I'm going to work and push myself to shorten that time span and when I get my first book of my 1st season out I would be very happy if yall could read it and let me know what yall think of it. But that is in the future, and the way I'm looking at it.. it's a bright future and I'm happy, so I will see yall on the other side 😀

You can have a "nice" sketchbook saved for when you have certain ideas that you want to draw and paint. But yeah I don't like how artists sometimes pretend that all those drawing were done one after another. I have my nice $25 sketchbook for the good ideas and then the $10 book for everyday sketching

3 was on I'm really on as I never stepped up and drew realism. *barfs* (not in a way that disrespects those who draw realism. I mean this in the context of I don't like drawing it.) All I drew was anime but never knew that it came from actual real life. Recently I began to kick that feeling in the face and draw realistic anatomy for some time until I actually understand how the body works l.

Things also to consider are not to get consumed by the critics or use and handle it in the right way. I stopped drawing for a long while because I only saw my flaws and when I still kept doing it, it brought kinda the fun and mentality downwards. It ate my psyche away because I felt like I can't improve. It's a difficult way to balance how far you should critique it and when to appreciate it. I just recently started drawing again and now I just try to stop looking at my art as a literal piece of shit. If you can't relate to this, good for you and I envy you for that, but for people who also have a weak mentality just try to see your art in a parenting way, you love it but you can still spot on flaws. What I'm trying to do now is just to draw things I like instead of just studying 24/7.

Definitely a great video, with some solid advice, especially about discipline. It is funny to me how my perspective has shifted over time, because I used to be afraid of including backgrounds in my art, now I try to force myself to include at least some sort of background in every finished piece I'm making. I can tell the areas where I struggle and I am trying to actively attack them, and it is interesting to me that the more I push to try to get serious and grow, the less video games and such take a large chunk of my time. And it's not like I think they're evil or a waste now it's just that I realize that they are the dessert, my art is the main course, and it's time to eat well and grow, not pig out on sweets. I use them mainly as a reward or an "if I have time" now, rather than specifically making time for them.

this vid is very good therapy for someone who had quitted art or had a burn out since I got that terrible health problem, I used to spend time in things that are so far from my domain aka art. it was hard for me to choose between my health or art but recently I comeback to art despite my health issues and began to remake my old manga´s that I made in 2017 "before I stopped for more than 4 years"

the last one ive really been trying to fix more by participating in artfight. my goal is to draw about one attack every day that im not really doing anything else. it's really been helping me improve my art and get me out of my comfort zone as well!

The 3rd one is my problem, I always fear drawing ears and eyes, when I draw I always try to cover the ears and eyes because it’s hard for me to draw them, I sometimes used to draw bandages on the eyes, someone wearing a hoodie so I don’t have to draw the ears, sometimes shadows, but recently I was drawing eyes and even if it looked bad, I’d try again and again, and now I can draw eyes! I haven’t started drawing ears yet, which is I’m gonna start practicing on next, tysm for making this video, everytime I watch someone so I can know what are my mistakes and stuff, all I hear is “you’re not gonna improve” and that let me down sometimes, but you’re not like that! Thank you!!

I’ve watched a bunch of videos on why I’m not improving, yet this one is the best one I’ve seen, and since I’ve improved very fast, tysm

Thanks for the video. I love you're advice about taking risks and taking risks. I'm trying to work on a fan comic for a game series that really love, but I think I need to be more discipline and be consistent on working on the project.

as i watched this, i was drawing a scene that I almost gave up on. it's more detailed than I'm used to and even painful. I'm hella motivated to continue until the end and to draw more once I'm done now that I've watched this.
