@davidclemens15782 ай бұрын
I was in the Air Force in the early eighties stationed near Boise Idaho. I had a 82 Ford ranger four-wheel drive that I put in an aftermarket cruise control. the truck actually had a 5-speed manual .For three years, I would come home on leave to Minnesota which is about 1400 mi one way. So that was over 2,800 mi round trip and had absolutely no issues. It functioned exactly the way a factory installed one did. To engage it you would press the set button at your specified speed then to slow down or stop you would tap the brakes then you would either shut it off or press resume to go back up to the set speed. You would either tap set or tap resume to increase or decrease the speed by a mile per hour. It obviously did not have the modern adaptive cruise. When I got out of the air force , I also put one on my father-in-law's Ford escort with a manual and it worked fine other than at one time it did lose a magnet, it used four on the drive shaft. If I remember it was front-wheel drives and it only needed magnets on one of the shafts.I replaced it and it worked fine.

For the cruise, how about a Vernier throttle? twist the knob to set you speed, smack the big red button to return cruise throttle to zero, dad had one on a 61 Ranchero for those long road trips between Houston to Lindsey Oklahoma and back in the 70s

Why not just do it old school with a wrench on the crank pulley? That way you also have more control over what you are actually doing. No need to abuse the starter and battery.
@ELNomad552 ай бұрын
The starter problem sounds like the solenoid. Remove it from the starter motor. Disassemble the solenoid and you'll find a large flat washer that is the contactor. Remove and file smooth removing all the arc burning. Replace, reinstall and you're all set.

I'm NOT a "Chevy guy", but what I did on my '67 GMC pickups starter was I took the solenoid apart. The big copper cable stud was kinda like a carriage bolt. I removed the retaining nut on the stud, pushed the stud out of the plastic square isolator, then turned the stud 90° or 180° which exposes a fresh contact surface, reinserted the stud, and tightened the nut. Then reassembled the solenoid & starter. Worked like brand new.

Ok dan, i like the idea of adding a homemade cruise control (in florida they call it a huckle buck, making something out of nothing) but lets look at safety. If a accident happens, someone cuts you off or you need to slow down mega quick that aint gonna work. You might want to make a air bag out of something and hook it up to a helium tank to inflate quickly. Just lookin out for you guys safety. I, me personally would paint the door to match the 2 lane blk top look but its your door do what you like.

If you don't have some kind of rev limiter, when you "pop it in neutral" with your cruise control on, your engine will rev to the moon. And, before you can turn that knob enough to slow it down or turn off the ignition, it will likely break something, you don't want broken.

I doubt you'll read this. But if you notch out the side of the u-joint cup, and change it to a bolt to the dash with a single nylock you would be able to just kick the rod out the side of the cup if you needed to get off the gas in a hurry. Heck at that you could setup another little catch with a magnet or something that would keep it out of the way when you don't want it and you wouldn't have to adjust it in and out as much for when you do want to engage that "cruise control". Either way, I agree, it's a terrible idea and I fully support it! 🍻cheers

Dan, I never comment because I figure you are like me, and you want what you want. I am %100 with you on that every other time, but the cruise control seems a little dangerous. There was a photo recently posted online that I think you commented on about a dude's throttle getting stuck, and he totaled his car and someone else's hot rod in the process (It might have been the brakes) and you were adamant about making these cars safe. I am pretty sure they make an aftermarket set up that is pretty safe and hooks up to your brake light switch to shut it off when the sh!t hits the fan. PS hi Danni!

For cheap and easy cruise control, how about just order a Holley carb with a manual choke. Hook up a choke cable and remove the choke butterfly from the air horn. Now you have cable operated fast idle with several steps on the fast idle cam for different rpm's. The fast idle cam also has an adjustment screw. Easy, done in 5 minutes or less.

If you made a pocket on the back of the angle bracket to hold a threaded nut from turning and then drilled a larger hole above the nut and add a compression spring over the threaded rod below the dash angle iron and you needed an emergency release you could just slap the shifter ball up and it would fall thru the hole and the spring also going thru the hole would shut down your throttle

That cruise control system looks dangerous. Look into jeep rock crawling. They use a mountain bike shifter and cable called a hand throttle.
