I remember when I first heard that Kursk submarine was down and that there are slim chances of people being saved. I was just a kid back then, 9 years old, on the beach in Meljine, Yugoslavia, with my mom and dad.... Didn't know how to swim yet.... I remember that I thought of the sailors and just got incredible willpower, got up, got into the water and just started swimming like I had been doing it my whole life. Never since have I felt that strong of a feeling, it's hard to put it into words.... just a boys try to do what he can, even if it was just that. Salute my Russian and all other Slavic brothers!

I also remember it vividly where I was and what was I doing when I first heard about the Kursk. I was 8 years old, and we've recently moved out of my hometown to a neighbouring village. After we've finished with the unpacking, we've switched on the TV, and then the news hit us. While the news anchor was relatively optimistic and said that rescue operations are underway, somehow I felt that they are dead. I had a strong dislike for water even before the tragedy, but after I've heard the news this has hit a whole new level. I still can't swim until the present day, much to the dismay of my father, who spent 25 years working at the local spa.

"The submarine sleeps on the seabed, but it's so far from land" This phrase looks a little different in Russian. And she is more, how shall I say... “The submarine is sleeping on the ground, but how far is it from the ground?” This phrase is more poetic and tragic. The approximate meaning is that the submarine lies at the bottom (almost on the ground), but it is too far from the land from which it sailed away on its voyage. p.s Курс, помним.

I was born and raised nearly as far from the ocean as you can get. Prior to college, I had only ever seen the ocean 3 times in my entire life, and only ever while looking out from lively, sunny beaches when I was young. Last year, I moved 2,600 miles to get an education in Alaska, and for the first time in almost a decade I saw the ocean. No matter how many times I've gone to stare out over its frigid surface, I've never shaken this immediate, reflexive rejection of what I'm looking at. The same way our brains automatically reject a reality-bending illusion no matter how convincing it may be, I've always rejected the reality of the ocean's impossible size as if its depths were some sort of trick being played on me. In my dorm building, the hot water runs out so fast I gave up on warm showers in my first month of college. One semester, I had an 8am class to attend at the height of winter, when the sun was only barely starting to rise at the end of class at around 10am. Every single morning walk to class, without a single exception, was so cold that small icicles formed on my mustache and the mucus in my nose froze. And yet when I think of what cold feels like, none of those torturous morning walks come to mind. Instead, all that I can think of is a day in October, when I went down to the arctic shoreline for the first time. Curiosity got the best of me, and I ended up plunging my hand into the murky water up to my wrist. I don't remember what my hand felt like to be honest, all I rememer was that it was cold. Colder than those morning walks, colder than mucus frozen so solid that it blocks my nose, colder than icicles reaching off my mustache to bush my top lip. My hand, submerged for half a second at most, felt a coldness that nothing has ever compared to. The men aboard Kursk, who sunk to those impossible depths, who sat below miles and miles of that indescribable cold, will always feel more real to me than the ocean they bravely traversed. Their memory is so heroic it eludes words, so I suppose I should let those brave men speak for themselves, for they do themselves justice in ways I could never. "Regards to everyone, no need to despair."

This song strikes a personal chord with me since I've even considered enlisting to also be a submariner when I was younger. Originally the song had one more verse. It followed the second one which is canonical: Here are the lyrics: To fly up to heaven this hell has happened Goodbye, honey, we' ve taken part in the parade. Do you remember our stairs, sun, popsicle? Capitan Kolesnikov is writing her a letter.
@alexbaker26037 ай бұрын
Tidying up the translation a bit from the literal to what I feel like is the actual meaning of the last stanza: > For us to rise to heaven we've had to go through this hell > Goodbye my dear, we've marched in life's parade > Do you remember our staircase, that sun, those ice cream bars? > Capitan Kolesnikov is writing her a letter. And IMO it should have stayed in the song, the switch from "is writing us a letter" to "is writing her a letter" is very poignant and reflects how the actual letter contains segments where Kolesnikov is writing in his capacity as a husband to his wife, and in his capacity as a commanding officer to the families and loved ones of his subordinates (and indirectly the country and the world).

No wonder they refused it - meddling with damaged submarine loaded with explosives and nuclear reactor is not by any means good idea. "Lies" most likely refers to media situation in days of catastrophe - everybody had a version and government had none they could provide to public. So while experts, journalists, retired navy officers and even foreign-funded extremists claimed that they know for sure what happened, government was mumbling something like "it sunk...". And after investigation was over time for conspiracy theories came: what you want to believe? That it was due to faulty torpedo that meant to be decommissioned, but it did not because of paperwork mistakes? Or that it was US submarine that cowardly attacked Kursk?

Россия наверное единственная странна у которой такая великая армия, у которой есть герои которых знает весь мир, трагедии мирового масштаба, победы в мировых войнах, Советский союз и вроде все тогда было хорошо а может и нет! Слава не сгибаемому народу России!
