Dude my friend joined band this year and started with trumpet. His trumpet was so cheap, the mouthpiece didn't have branding, the trumpet didn't have branding, the trumpet didn't have a serial number, etc. I tried playing it because his F (in the staff) sounded bad. That was because his trumpet was flat on the F note and only the F note and his slides were stuck so I couldn't fix it. My personal trumpet is $2,000. He played it and it sounded like he knew something. Gee I wonder why... I definitely recommend an intermediate trumpet or maybe the $500 dollar for beginners. Not much else. Being first chair in 7th grade (year 8 for other countries) is hard man.

I have played maybe 15 different trumpets so far, but only five so much that I can build a solid opinion about them. However, I noticed that the magical price is 1500€. Up to this point more money means better quality. Above that they just have different features. Some you might like, some you may dislike. If you have a trumpet with real gold, it will be expensive. However, the weight of the trumpet is a drawback, so you might choose a cheaper finish like a copper nickel coating (those are the silver looking ones. Real silver is very rare). I know several professional players and most settle for a trumpet that is around 3000€ to 5000€. One of them has a 8000€ Dowids, but plays a 1800€ Yamaha because "it just feels like home". A really expensive trumpet won't make you better. It can, but often you prefer what you are used to anyways.

@shadowgolem915811 ай бұрын
Some of the difference is in the playability. Some is in the subtle overtones (hard to hear on a youtube video). 1000 to 5000 you are talking particular name brands and matetials and very specific build requirements that become very dependent on the player's style. Often they get tweaked or tuned for a pro player after they are purchased.

I agree with your assessment. I played for 7 years and haven't for the past 28. Now one of my kids wants to play the trumpet and I'm trying to find the best option for her to start with. After this, I'm going for the $1,000 trumpet, but used! Something she can use through the years. I have a Conn from around 1965 that I used for my entire time, but the value of it is too high for her to take to school. I may just get back into it, too! Thanks for the video!

Played through high school and into college on a Bach Mercedes which sounded good enough, I guess. Then got a great deal on a Bach Strad LR180S37 and got a lot of compliments on tone quality. Still have the Strad, but only pull it out for a little nostalgia these days.
@tylerhenderson1679 ай бұрын
I got a killer deal my junior year of high school, on a (yr. 2004-5) New Bach Stradivarius model43G. Retail was right at $4,200 plus tax, incredibly my band director, Mack Roberts, had pull at Capital music center in Montgomery AL. Walked out only paying $1500!!!! Still have and cherish this horn. It was a total improvement over the beginner Bach I learned on in middle school. I went to college and saw several other players had Strads but they were the model 37. In my opinion the 43g is more of a concert horn, but it is capable of having a FAT bold velvet smooth sound. Doesn’t ever have a thin hushed sound. The big bore and reverse lead pipe helped to eliminate overpowering the horn. Also, not mine, but a Yamaha xeno is a great solo/concert horn. There are so many different types styles and concepts for different types of music sounds and players . I played more than 50 different horns before I found “the-one” I’ll never forget that day. I got to play a 20 pound $57,000 trumpet!! It was cumbersome, but had the darkest boldest sound I have ever heard/played!! Sorry for the lengthy rant. Hail Sinfonia! Epsilon Nu!!

I hear no difference in the sound anywhere! But I think that an expensive trumpet is going to be easier to play, will respond better, and will be a joy to hold in your hands, which means you will most likely practice more often and treat it with more respect (precision). I’ve got two cheap trumpets because I fell into the trap of “don’t buy an expensive trumpet if you can’t play.” So now I’ll be buying a third one for a lot more money and be stuck with the additional two cheap trumpets that I probably won’t be able to unload easily.

I am a student trumpet player in high school right now. I believe that a student should start on a less expensive model, probably between 500 and 1000 dollars. I think a student is ready to purchase a more expensive intermediate or professional model trumpet, once they have reached the level where an upgrade will make a noticable difference in their playing. I started on a Jupiter student model, which served me very well for 5 years. This year I upgraded to a Bach Stradivarius 37, and immediately noticed a huge difference in tone quality, intonation, and ease of playing.

After 50 years of playing the trumpet/ cornet/ euphonium and playing on over 50 different horns what I've learned is that no matter what horn you play you're going to sound like you. Intonation and how the horn feels when you play it is key. Does the horn come alive when you put breath into it? Does it sing for you?
@stevenuttley10 ай бұрын
Are these new? A $1000 second-hand trumpet could easily be as good as a $5000 new one. In fact it could be the same trumpet a few years older! That said the last 2 sound similar. Once you reach around $2000 differences will be minor and down to personal preference. $10,000 won't necessarily get you a better trumpet. It might get you an instrument by a boutique maker with the ability to specify different lead pipes, bells, different alloy compositions, valve sets etc. if that's what you want but the quality of the instrument gets pretty high at around 2K so above it you're either paying for incremental improvements (which might even be illusory) or the ability to customize and get something to your exact personal taste.

A good trumpet player can make a bad horn sound good, but a bad horn will wear you out fast. It takes a lot of effort to correct for pitch, and coloration and a stuffy horn that doesn’t allow one to blow freely will really hinder one’s playing. The listener will not notice the difference between a good or bad horn right away, but the player sure will.
