De-Flowering my Bougainvillea Bonsai - June 2020

Deflowering is a pruning process whereby flowers are removed. Removing flowers in bougainvillea is all about its health. Leaving flowers on such bonsai trees take their toll. A tree puts too much energy to produce its flowers and this comes at the expense to the rest of the tree. Physiologically, flowers are more about the survival of the species (and of course our enjoyment too!), while healthy leaves and roots are more about the strength and survival of the individual tree. We advice deflowering especially on young trees that are still in training. Of course on more mature trees, deflower any spent flowers to stimulate the formation of more new flowers.

Yes large cuttings root easily.

Yes of course, I will soon put up a video showing the 'plastic bag method' which I have used to root large diameter cuttings of bougainvilleas and olives alike.

It depends on the stage of the tree. At first leave branches to grow widely to thicken them according to their level on the trunk i.e fattest lower down going thinner up the trunk. Then cut back to force back budding and start to form the secondary and tertiary branches, creating the desired ramification. Always do directional pruning i.e. prune to an outward facing bud. Hope this helps.
