DO NOT use any 2 stroke oil as lower unit gear lube! 80-90 weight gear oil is typically used there.

What happens if you skip the water step

if you don’t feed water through the outboard for a little while the impeller will basically shred

Ty, you may want to use lower end gear lube instead of 2-cycle engine oil in your lower unit
@sportswTy2 жыл бұрын
why would i put gear lube for an oil change exactly?
@donaldwolff10662 жыл бұрын
@@sportswTy Ty, the two cycle engine oil is mixed with your gasoline and lubricates the engine as it is burned. The lower end is just a gear box to transfer the vertical spinning shaft from the engine to a horizontal shaft that holds the prop. That lower unit (gear box) needs gear lube, not two cycle engine oil. You need to drain that 2-cycle engine oil out of the lower unit - replace with gear lube and make sure that the gas you use for the engine has the 2-cycle oil mixed in at the proper ratio. A 2-cycle engine, unlike a 4 cycle, does not have an oil sump and a dip stick where you would check and change the oil.

@@donaldwolff1066 Yes i understand. It makes sense to do that for a two cycle engine. However in a two stroke marine motor, the oil needs to be drained and replaced alongside with the gasoline and oil mixture. For other two cycle engines, what you said makes sense, but there is a specified port (as shown in video) where the oil needs to be drained when winterized, and then replaced in the spring. Thanks for the feedback though!

@@sportswTy yes Ty that lower unit does need to be serviced routinely, with gear lube. Please do not rely on two cycle engine oil to take the place of lower unit gear lube. That 2 cycle engine oil you showed in your video is to be mixed with the gas you burn in the engine - not to be used in the lower unit. I'd be happy to help you figure this out before you damage your outboard.
