I remember a simpler time when players were given free reign to make decisions on how to break down a defense. Nowadays? It’s all scripted- this looks more like American football. Sad what has happened to creativity.

It’s because defensive organisation has gotten so much better that it kills spaces especially between the lines. That is where creative players thrives. Nowadays, you need to be structured to draw defenders out to get the spaces

@@mfir050 No, scripted attack can only get you so far before being found out. Modern video analysis speeds up this process. There is still - and has to be - space for freedom of expression. You simply just do not tell the likes of Messi or Hazard what to do in the final third.

In my opinion this is just one of many resources the team can fall back on. There are different kinds of players ones that will be creative out of the box, ones that will create in a restricted certain like this and ones that want to be told what to do. Having many combinations like this these caters for all types of players and many times, they just use pieces of the combinations in an actual match. Rarely will you find it all working as is and btw these training patterns are old as the game I believe.
