I am afraid Shakadang and Taroko Gorge are now too dangerous. It seems that the Shakadang trail is to be the eternal resting place for the poor Singaporean couple (from Australia) caught in the 0403 Hualien earthquake and the resulting landslides. The lack of real safety protection for hikers on the trails, plus the damage caused by human intervention in quarrying and for tourism, means that future fatal rockfalls are inevitable. The use of helmets was never followed through - but the fact they even existed shows it's not a safe place for mass tourism. The 'hair nets' used as barriers on the highway will not stop rocks weighing one hundred tonnes. The Gorge should be left alone now. No more lives should be lost. (Sorry I am writing this in English - my Taiwanese is too basic!)
