If you want to complain, just don’t listen. Move along. I saw the Grateful Dead dozens of times before Jerry died, but I love these guys. Mayer’s guitar work starting around 5:00 is blistering. And the whole thing is made even more powerful if you recall that this was the first song he and Bobby played together. Great stuff; thanks for recording, thanks for posting.

It took me a long long time to appreciate Althea. Now its in my top 5. 25 years ago when I first started listening to the GD, my busdy always mentioned loving this song. I heard the intro and thought ok, its a nice little ditty but its no Help-Slip, Eyes or even China Cat. It sounded so radio friendly and standard to me. I dunno when it finally clicked, but eventually I heard the mellow groove it was throwing down, just kinda floating along. Jerry's solos and the chord progression were the next thing I took notice of. Such great chords to solo over. Then the lyrics sank in and I got sucked in to the story and mystery of it all. Its a good.ass song. Its also the song the got John Mayer into the.Dead. He was obsessed with it. And he played it with Bob on late night tv as a special guest which paved the way.to Dead and co!

Yes, first Dead song to "catch" John's attention,. Asked how long it took for him to "get into" The Deads musical style..?! "About a year..", lol. It took me about half that time, but I was just watching, listening, after growing up listening to Metal and Hardcore(Punk). I was already driving to see these bands in HS. I lived in a hippie type, small city, and whenever I'd ask "Where'd you get this?", "Dead tour" was the answer just about every time. First show was in Miami 88' on Fall Tour. Had a blast, but didn't know the songs, so when asked how the show was, I responded, "I could tell they're really good musicians!", which was totally true. I wanted to hear them better though. It wasn't hard to find tapes of shows, and one of my first favorites was from a show The Dead played in our hometown, when I was ten years old. It was from Ithaca, NY at Cornell University, in a building called Barton Hall, in 77'. We went on tour from 89'-92', then random shows until my last with Jerry in Vermont, 95'. I was quite shocked. Jerry was barely playing, and couldn't read the teleprompter he'd been using. It was scary! Then he passed away after the tour, while in detox. IDT that was his primary problem, but it definitely didn't help. He needed a break to take some time off. Hundreds of people had been working for the band for years, and a break would leave them out of work. So they'd keep touring. I've been amazed with how well they've been playing the last few years.👍💯🔥⚡🎶✌️

His tone and signature PRS guitar with his two rock and slight ts10 distortion sounds mighty clean on the edge of breakup. Where’s Oteils bass in the mix? Phil’s stand out, in the front bass as a lead instrument sound has always been such a fundamental aspect of what made these songs so unique and wonderful. I’ve rarely been able to find him in the mix from a variety of recording sources
@jimlutz80925 ай бұрын
Get better speakers, I think. Oteil's bass is thumping in this recording. And as a musician, he is head and shoulders above most with a bass in their hands. Allman Brothers bassist. Tedeschi Trucks Band bassist. After those gigs, I'm just surprised he's not bored to death with this one!

@@jimlutz8092 Oteil has stated that each step from Colonel Bruce to Tedeschi Trucks to the Allman Bros. has helped prepare him for this penultimate gig. Why would he be 'bored to death' when the Dead's catalog is head and shoulders above the others? He seems to be enjoying every minute of it.
@novakaya5 ай бұрын
I know it’s not a soundboard dude. I’ve checked out a whole range of their recordings…boards, high quality audience tapes and live. My point was in general I can’t hear a lot of what he’s playing up there. Maybe decades in the Phil Zone spoiled me and tuned my ear for the bass line accompaniment of this material to present in a very distinct, forward, lead way. My sense is part of what’s going on here is Oteil is a phenomenal bassist, but comes from a different school stylistically. Unlike Phil he’s a more keeping the bottom end steady kind of player and isn’t running a lot of hyper psychedelic orbits around the beat. So he syncs up with the drums and they form a harmonized backbone Thoughts people?

This john jam is forced to say the least. He is trying to recapture a solo and pull out all the stops to entertain the people who paid to see them in Vegas. Tbh youd feel and hear more magic at a guitar center on a friday night. @stevewelchontario
@kevincoleman90354 ай бұрын
The magic to jam and the grateful dead was the Rollercoaster ride around the country, the ups and downs, the carnival that came to town. This is and off shoot trying to sell a culture to everyone who missed the real thing. The dead is not contained nor created in a vacuum. It needs outdoor summer time spring and fall, indoor shows are for the winter. Old dead shows you can taste the summer off the chords and the sounds, the crackle in Jerry's voice, the desperation in Brent's. This has become an unfortunate sideshow fulfilling lives with an energy they fear they have lost. More people of this dead clan should drop out and tune in. Quit your job sell your house and go walk in India.

Never was into The Grateful Dead, didn't like the lead vocal. Then the bass from Tedeschi Trucks, Oteil Burbridge, joined the group and that caught my attention, but when John Mayer joined the group I knew I was in! He is a perfect fit for this style of music, light years better than Garcia...... just my opinion (Please don't hate on me). Got to see them in Hampton Coliseum in Virginia on 11-8-2019 and was very grateful for the oppurtunity. I was able to experience, first hand, that these fans are most definitely a breed apart from the fans of any concert I have ever been to (And i have been going to concerts since the 70's)! My favorite song is Sugaree and I think Mayer just KILLS THIS SONG!. I love the keyboard player, Jeff Chimenti and Bob Weir (Although I think Bob is a bit overrated). Anyhow, sad to see this band calling it quits, but I have one good live memory of this group that I will never forget. Thank you Grateful Dead and thank you Dead and Company. Gonna be a long time b4 anything like this band ever happens again..... if ever!

The band and John’s vocals are on one time sequence, while his guitar is on another totally out of synch with the band’s cadence. Attempting to do too much. However, there are some very interesting and imaginative moments from Meyer. I believe this version needs some refinement before attempting to be as bold.

There were some incredible moments for John Mayer at these shows - where he blew my mind with his playing - but he also came out flat on rare occasions - however he seems to be getting better and better and overall is amazing. Jerry tried lots of creative guitar maneuver's and not everything worked out - but when it did it was spectacular. John is getting there - and it's so much fun
@jimkeogh85525 ай бұрын
@@stevewelchontario I agree. Initially, Mayer appeared to want to just “mirror” Garcia’s play, rather than internalize and pay homage through his own interpretation. Compare the difference between Meyer’s early stint with Dead and Company with, say Warren Haynes, who appears so natural and intuitive in his playing. Now Mayer is certainly trying to interpret more than cover, and because he is, he has a tendency to attempt too complex a version, definable by notes which don’t “fit.” There are passages in this performance when John nails it, and those passages are both imaginative and “wow.” As a percussionist, I know it’s natural to play a piece of someone I emulate, and completely overdo it. Both Steve Taylor and Rob Brown taught me that often it’s about the notes you leave out more than the notes one attempts to “stuff within.”

I get it's DEAD and Co ...but why did Bob take the last solo??? John Mayer is killing it and the final solo you give it to Bob weir for a mediocre slide solo????? Frustrating. Stick to rhythm Bob.
@vlada5 ай бұрын
Because it's Bob. Which is fine now. His slide solos used to annoy the f out of me 40yrs ago but as time winds down, Bobby is the uncle who farts at the dinner table, we just laugh and say as always "Yup, that's Bobby. It wouldn't be a Dead show without it."🍻
@stevewelchontario5 ай бұрын
Ha ha so funny. I have come to appreciate his eclectic one of a kind guitar playing, there is definitely a genius to it, but he is certainly a weird guitar player.

@@vlada Good ol Bob Weird. He can go too far and sometimes be musical drama queen but then... often it works! It's not for nothing and ... and there were years when he was the one keeping up the front of the stage and music while Jerry was no so present. And never underestimate how much musical conjuring he's bringing in. Stuff you don't exactly notice. Like Phil, having one of those guys in a jam means it's got levels of twist, play and odd delight showing up. But yeah, when Bobby gets out the slide, there may be cringe involved.

This is mine & the most beautiful woman in the 🌎's theme song, Anthea Page. Just change 1 letter. We had a time in Vegas staying at thr Las Vegas Country Club with my friend who was the grandson of the governor of the Bloody Kaintuck and former commissioner of baseball ⚾️. But we woke Mr. CJF up at 6:00 a.m. and I said, "We gotta go." I had lost some 💰 and was going back in to win 🏆 it back, or... we drive 🚗 due north up into Yellowstone and Lake Ellery and then down into Steinbeck and on to SF where we were gonna stay w an archi-girl w whom I'd had sex in a ballroom at the Intercontinental in Miami, under a table, while the party went on around us.
