DMB been covering this song since the very beginning. Always an incredible jam when you saw them live. Was lucky enough to see them perform it with Neil Young. So many great versions of this, hard to pick a favorite.

Dead and Company actually formed in 2015 after the Grateful Dead farewell concerts. John Mayer and Bob Weir bonded after performing Althea together on TV. Dead and Company has three original Dead members, Weir and the two drummers, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann and added Mayer on lead guitar and vocals, Oteil Burbidge on bass and Jeff Chimenti on keyboards. I saw them each year from 2015-2019 and it was a blast each time. Weir did lead vocals on his songs and Mayer sang the Jerry songs.

Dead and Company started in 2015 after Bob Weir and John Mayer played together on a tv show. The band consists of three original Grateful Dead members (Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzman) along with John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge, bass, (who also played in Allman Brothers and Tedeschi Trucks) and Jeff Chimenti (keys) who has played with Bob Weir since 1995. They have sold out 30 shows at the Sphere in Las Vegas this summer.

I was at this one. The whole show was beyond dope. It was perfect. It was the last night (of 3) dead company shows here in Boulder, on what was advertised as their last tour. Vibes were amazing the whole time. Dave sitting in went so hard. I used to go on tour, so I seen so many shows, this one was special. Bless up/rip I love the pic of nip in the background

After Jerry Garcia passed, in 95, the Dead went through many different waves, with several different artists. Phil lesh, who played with the Original Dead band, worked with members of the Dead on Further, then struck out on a solo career away from the Dead. Bill Kreutzmann played drums for the original Grateful dead and was a part of several spin offs, until he went solo. Mickey Hart, who started with the Dead 2 years after they began, became a stalwart in music beyond the Dead (working midi implementation). He and Bill also performed the Rythm Devils. Hart has been a mainstay for the Dead and its offshoots after returning in 75. And Bobby Weir has been the mainstay of all mainstays beginning the Grateful Dead with Jerry, Phil, Billy and Keyboardist/singer Ron Pigpen McKernan. He has marched through more than 55 years of good vibes as the Dead continue at the Sphere in vegas.

"Dead & Company" are (in short): the "re-formed" Grateful Dead, after the death of primary lead guitarist, Jerry Garcia. Dead & Co. used tons of guest players, as well (fans of The Dead and, simply, friends and dedicated musicians, as well) ...but they employed (although, rarely, at the same time) the surviving members of The Grateful Dead: Guitarist/Vocalist: Bob Weir; Bassist: Phil Lesh; Drummers: Bill Kreutzmann [pronunciation: "kroitz-muhnn"] and Mickey Hart. ----It, also, seems that: you did not notice that: the organ/keys player (I don't have any idea who that is, myself, either. ---which is an EXTREME oddity, for me!), mimics Hendrix's guitar solo, on organ! Perfectly!

All along the watchtower was written and sung by Dylan. The most popular take on the song was from Jimi Hendrix. When the Dead and Dylan did their summer tour together a couple of Dead members played Watchtower with Dylan's band, before the Dead did their sets (or after, depending on the show). The Dave Matthews band is considered a jam band along the lines of the Grateful Dead. To have Dave and members of the original Dead together doing a Dylan song is something.

Dead and Company is comprised of three original members of the Grateful Dead, Bob Weir (rhythm guitar and vocals), Bill Kreutzmann (drums) and Mickey Hart (drums, percussion), together with Jeff Chimenti on keys, John Mayer on lead guitar and vocals and Oteil Burbridge on bass. Kreutzmann left the band on their last tour and was replaced by Bobby's drummer, Jay Lane. Some Deadheads are highly critical of this band. Not me! I think they have kept the fun and the spirit of the Grateful Dead music/shows alive for younger generations. Mayer is a genius guitar player and Oteil has played with the last lineup of the Allman Brothers Bnad and Tedeschi Trucks Band in their earlier days. Original bass player, Phil Lesh, is over 80 and still tours on occasion with Phil Lesh and Friends.

The DMB version of this song, often performed live, is great. His band with the violin and sax adds a lot. This is an interesting mashup with a Dead sound. Did I hear a bit of “Stairway to Heaven” in the instrumental break before the last chorus?

Jimi's version of Dylan's song, especially the studio version, is the best IMO. For energy and emotion Neil Young's live versions I prefer. Neil Young with Pearl Jam, N.Y. with Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young with Dave Matthews (acoustic), Neil Young with Booker T & The MG's, N.Y. with Willie Nelson, N.Y. with...you get the idea!

Just before Jerry Garcia died in 1995, the Grateful Dead played three shows in Las Vegas, and had an "unknown" band open for them. They had played Vegas the previous four years, and had legendary artists open for them... Santana, Steve Miller Band, Sting, and Traffic. So in 95, everyone was saying "Who is Dave Matthews?". Everyone was doing the Dead parking lot thing, and we went into the venue toward the end of DMB's set. The stadium was almost empty... They broke into Watchtower, and I was bummed, because I loved hearing the Dead play this song, and I knew then that they wouldn't be playing it. However, by the time DMB was finished, we said "Hey, these guys are pretty good! Who are they?" So this video is sort of a return to Dave's "big break"... 🤙😎

For anyone that isn't aware, the chord progressions in this song are the same as during and after the solo in Stairway. I personally think that was Jimmy Page's homage to Hendrix, who had died the previous year. 🤔

Great choice! Dead & Co. is the latest vehicle for original band members Bob Weir (Rhythm guitar / vocals) and Mickey Hart (Drums / Percussion) to carry on the tradition of the Live - Grateful Dead musical experience. John Mayer playing the Lead guitar (Jerry Garcia) part. Oteil Burbridge is incredible on Bass (Phil Lesh's part) and came from the last incarnation of the Allman Bros. band and also Jeff Chimenti (keyboards). The Dead's original drummer, Bill Kreutzman left the band last year and was replaced by that younger dude you saw, Jay Lane, who's been touring with weir as Bob Weir and the Wolf Brothers. The Grateful Dead do a great rendition of this Dylan song as well and you should check that out one day.

Dead and Company is Bobby Weir and Mickey Hart of The Grateful Dead with John Mayer on guitar and Oteil Burbridge on bass, Jeff Chimenti on keys and Jay Laine on the other drum kit. You mentioned the bass work and Oteil is responsible for that fine work! Oteil played the last 15 years or so with The Allman Brothers Band with Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks on guitars. I HIGHLY recommend checking out some of that late ABB with that lineup!! Anything from about 99-2014 will be that group. Dead and Company is in the midst of a residency at The Sphere in Vegas. Check out some of that stuff, the visuals are out of this world!
