The Grateful Dead started before I was born. They were "Classic Rock" by the time I discovered them, but not like the other classic rock bands. They were still touring - not doing reunion tours but still touring, & an incredible energy crackled in the air whenever anyone talked about them. Going to a Dead show was understood as a right of passage. When the Dead were in town, shit was jumping off. People became more alive, life turned full color. It was never about the past or recapturing the spirit of the sixties. It was contemporary as hell. It was about NOW. Kids from every generation get excited about The Grateful Dead. To me, that seems like a positive given the state of our society today. D & C might be nice for misty - eyed old farts who want to cling to some nostalgia, but it's killing the music & all the things that make it exciting & that get people listening. I don't think they're too old. I get the strong impression that they just don't care.

Glad all of you still enjoy this. Watching Mickey play (@ 1/2 speed) with mallets, no cymbals and completely removed from the mix makes me want to cry.. 😥Also, If Billy missed the 2nd set because of a pulled muscle and this tour just started? I think the writing is on the wall.

@@lornestein7248 Then don't watch them. Pretty simple. I've been watching them for 50 years. If they are drumming for other people's enjoyment as well as their own why would you want that to end?

@@jeffjewell9770 This conversation is taking place everywhere on YT in regards to aged rock stars still performing right now - Bon Jovi, Yes, McCartney, The Who, Elton, Phil Collins..etc. 90% of all occupations retire once proficiency/competency becomes an issue. Why do you believe they should be exempt from this.

@@lornestein7248 Mickey’s been out to lunch for years. Billy can still jam a bit, but yeah, if he’s pulling muscles and missing shows. From what I’ve heard, the tempo is all Bob. At least they’re not wearing over the ear headphones and singing like SRV on American Idol after a bee just stung their tongue. But Jeff, the typical “don’t shatter my nostalgic illusion” responder to critique, is right though. Don’t watch. It’s not a disaster, it’s just lame. Let it go, let it be, it’s not for you or me.

It's a funny thing about artists, as they move forward with their craft, the audience is reflecting on their earlier work, asking for them to go back to where they were. A liberal view tends to be more able to appreciate the art, the artists, and the dynamics of physical space and time marching forward, where a conservative perspective retreats to what was, trying to inexorably, futilely hanging on to some personal opinion, around which creative artists and their art are unable to adhere...Stretch your wings, live a little more at least in the present, Be Kind, and accepting if not appreciative of what is. I derived value, continue to derive value, and anticipate gathering additional value from the moments we shared there, and continue to interweave across the social fabric among viewers and listeners from the art. 🎹🎸🥁🥁🎸🎻🔌📽💻
