My great great grandfather,Anderson Curby Crosson, Georgia’s 17th company “I” fought at Devil’s Den. He lost his life at Ft. Gilmore near Richmond on September 29, 1864. He lost all four of his brothers as well as his life in this miserable war. Only one of his siblings survived. This war will repeat itself unless we wake up.

Wow, I have 3 Union Grandfather's who served 1863 thru 1865. The 2 from New York survived. I'm told one was at Appomattox and the other saw the fall of Richmond! They were at Petersburg and the crater. And, yes let Freedom Ring for one and all! The third one came home too...

@@stephenhenion8304 great for you. We are from Ireland and one side of our family were indentured servants in Georgia and the other side was dropped off in North Carolina. The martins were slightly more affluent but not wealthy. Samuel Martin my 4 times great grandfather fought in both revolutionary wars……1774 until it was over and then again in the war of 1812.

I often say to myself the US politicians kept kicking an issue down the road for someone else to figure out. By 1860 the time arrived but too late to figure out a solution without rancor that led to war. As of today we are being led down a road astray by US politicians void from common sense or healthy solutions.

My heart goes out to this story and this soldier. My Grandfather was Col. Warren A Robinson who also served with the 79th Infantry Division 314th infantry. I’m so proud of these men especially the ones that made the ultimate sacrifice for us. May God remember them and bless them.

Even harder to imagine the 4th. Staggering humans, dazed and confused by the carnage, not knowing really if it was over or would flow back their way. So much to clean up and repair. I imagine for the residents at that time it stuck with them for life. My father was a WW2 vet and rarely talked about what he witnessed. In his late life(he lived to just shy of 94) I took him for a ride one Saturday, and as a daily church goer we were talking and I asked him if he was afraid of dying. He turned sharply to me and with wide eyes said "I have to answer for all those people I killed!. WOW!!! He carried that with him for 69 years. GOD bless all the soldiers. I don't know if war really is like hell, but it has to at least be in it's suburbs.

I live about 40 minutes from Gettysburg. It is such a serene place and am lucky to be able to access it on a regular basis. When you stand in places where decisions were made, small decisions, that ultimately determined what the USA looks like today, it's overwhelming. Had the slightest thing gone differently within those 3 days, we may be on a continent of several nations instead of one. Sometimes that's hard for me to wrap my head around.

Great job, JD and Jared. You showed EP Alexander's 12-pounder Napoleon cannons several times. Sometime you might want to mention the difference between the tubes on the same type of gun as used by the Union and the Confederates. The latter are straight all the way to the muzzle, whereas the former are more "ornamental, and flute outwards at the muzzle. With cannon-casting bronze a valuable resource, skipping the extra needed for the fluting saved metal toward more rebel cannons. You will see this all over the battlefield, for example guns on Confederate Avenue.

My family had a blacksmith shop on North East St in Carlisle Pa. When the Confederates came to town in late June 1863 the camped all around it being so close to the army post now the Army War College. They totally robbed the shop. Nothing was passed down though word of mouth to me about the Rebs looting the shop. I had friends that sat on the board of the Cumberland County historical Society that gave me a book in 1998 that had a article called The Invasion: Rebel Occupation ofCarlisle, 1863 by S.K. Donavin. The article listed The Principle Sufferers . My "Grandfathers" are listed as "Messrs James and John Bosler, Blacksmiths, were absolutely robbed. Their shop was entered and there large and varied stock of tools stolen. Every thing except there bellows and anvil was taken. This is one , if not the most serious of the losses, and these worthy mechanics are ill able to bear it." I still have the anvils from the shop. They're big weighing around 300 lbs. No wonder the Secesh left them. My Father retired as a Blacksmith. He was fifth generation in Carlisle.

The camera lingers for a moment on the headstone of a WWII casualty, Pvt Frank Materewicz of Dog Company, 506th PIR. It lists the date of his death as June 12, 1944. If I’m not mistaken this would have put him in the action around Carentan, likely familiar to many folks from Band of Brothers.

My G. G. Grandfather was at Gettysburg with the 1st Ohio Lt. Artillery, Co. H. He also fought @ Bull Run and other major Civil War battles. He survived & was mustered out on June 14, 1865. After the war, he became a Doctor and moved to West Liberty, IA. He died in West Liberty in 1943 @ the age of 96. He was the oldest and longest living Civil War veteran in the region.

Just wanted to add a comment about a woman who was baking biscuits in a kitchen and was killed by a bullet that came thru a wall she was the only civilian who was killed during the battle of Gettysburg no one ever says anything about her but when I went to Gettysburg I found out about her hope this helps you

Interesting history, and very cool presentation.. As a kid living in Fairfax/Manassas Va area in the early 1970s, I remember finding musket balls and other items in the woods around still present pits. Later on that decade got to spend two summers in Waerloo Belgium where I found a musket ball in an ancient oak stump and a WWI Geerman helmet buried next to a wall at Hougomont Farm using a kid's Radio Shack metal detector.

Just wanted to point out something here: The young man in the video thumbnail is not a casualty of Gettysburg, but is a casualty of Malvern Hill. His name is Edwin Francis Jemison who was 17 years old upon his death at Malvern Hill on July 1st, 1862. He was a part of Company C, 2nd Louisiana Infantry Regiment. His exact burial location is unknown with at least three suspected burial locations.

My 3rd great grandfather RN Ward of Albemarle Co Virginia was on the other side behind the canons of Poages Battalion. He later surrended at Appomattox with Lee and died in 1928, just before the stock market crashed.

At the end you focus, intentionally or inadvertently, on the head stone of a soldier from Pennsylvania of Polish decent….very common in Pennsylvania, by more so, of the infamous 506th PIR who died perhaps in combat related to D-Day, on June 14, 1944. Pvt. Frank Materewicz, May 11, 1923. Do you have any further information about him? Interesting series and it’s so wonderful to see the stellar work being done by the US park service and others…to take us back as best they can, to those three hot July days in 1863! Magnificent!
