I bought a $6 "JB Well Waterwell" epoxy part from home depot and I put that into the holes on the non-rust side and rusted side of the metal plate and it worked out for me well. No more leaking. That is what epoxy steel stick is made for this kind of problem. Simple fix and no need for welding or anything,

Last December I bought a brand new 1HP Waste King on sale from Amazon for $80, but I have not installed it yet because the temporary fixed 1/2HP InSinkErator is still working great, I couldn't believe it and I used mine every day.

Planned obsolesence in action. Make a vital part so badly and cheaply that when it goes, the whole unit's kaput. The windings on that looked pristine, but, with water ingress, it's still a dump it job.

That looks a lot like an InSinkerator and I've had 4 or 5 of them fail that way in a row. I hate them, but my friends keep giving them to me for free when they remodel or have to remove one for a home inspection (some places don't allow them and some inspectors will write them up if the house has a septic tank). The more expensive InSinkerators have more stainless steel, so they are not all bad, but the fact that they are willing to put their name on these rust-buckets makes me want to avoid them. Even if they made their cheap models out of heavy plastic, I suspect they would last longer, since the plastic grind chambers I've seen seem to last forever; it's only the steel bottom plate that leaks. The next time I have to buy one new, I'll try a Waste King, since I haven't heard of them rusting out.

That's my thing with ISE. Their evolution models are great, IMO superior to WK, but man, the badgers are absolutely awful. ISE really needs to either discontinue the Badgers or at the very freaking least make them SS, as even a $50 cheap ass waste king is SS. If it came down to badger or waste king, I'd 100% go waste king. If it's Evolution or waste king, it would be a harder decision.

I've done the same to get an extra year, but it seems that once the water gets into the motor, its life is limited. They sometimes reach a point where they won't start by themselves, though you can get them going with a drill, so either the start switch or the capacitors go bad. Maybe if I seal one up before it starts leaking, I'll have better luck.

my badger is rusty like yours but the leak is from the upper plastic housing which has several cracks. It is missing one of the macerator teeth so it vibrated & cracked the housing. I'm gonna go get some JB Weld at fix. For now I won't turn on the disposal but hopefully I can fix the cracks until I can afford a new one. I put this unit in about 15 years ago so I guess I got my money's worth, hahaha.

My Badger 5 (1/2 horsepower) garbage disposal is 3 years old and the flywheel is completely rusted. Is that typical? I can't tell if it's thinning, but I couldn't get it to work twice in the last 2 weeks. I hit the reset button the first time and got it running again, but the 2nd time I had to insert the handle end of a plunger in it to get it moving again. I'm guessing some of the rust may be flaking off and jamming it? What do you think?

If a wooden broom (plunger, etc) handle doesn't unjam an old unit then my advice is throw it out. Disposals wear out and it's not worth the time and effort to keep fighting it. (this is assuming you hear the "humming" noise but it doesn't grind).

I've got one that I don't think is fixable either. Here is the problem. The motor runs beautifully, however, the grinding plate doesn't turn at all as if it were completely disconnected from the motor shaft. Is this fixable? Mine does not seem to have a nut in the center of the grinding mechanism plate, and it pivots from side to side if I push down on it. I don't think it is supposed to do that. Perhaps I should just replace it since it is about 30 years old. :)

My disposal was leaking from the bottom. My teeth seem to be ok. There is plenty of rust, but there don't seem to be any holes that go all the say through, but I can't get the grinding unit separated fwrom the motor, to see what is going on. +Donald Wiggins Well I guess yes you can do that but it is at the end of its life and not worth the risk of all that water damage that can soon occur as well as the electrical hazard it creates. The metal is worn thin and is not something that I would ever recommend patching. It will fail again soon.

Induction motors need to be started up, a lot like a car engine, or they just hum, so the centrifugal switch on the motor shaft connects up the "start" capacitor. If the switch gets stuck in the run position, the start circuit never gets activated and if it gets stuck in the start position, the start capacitor burns out.

i have a question! I just moved into a house about 6 weeks ago. About 1 week after moving in I put potato peels down the disposal. I know I shouldnt but my old one was a good disposal and it didnt have a problem with peels, so I didnt realize it would be a problem. So it clogged the disposal, but I pushed the reset button and waiting a while and ran hot water. then it unclogged and has worked fine ever since. I barely use it so I dont clog it again, but now its leaking regularly from the bottom. My landlord said that if they find that I am the reason for the leak then they will charge me $85 for the plumber, so my question is, do you think that the potato peel insident is the cause of the leak? I dont think so based on what I have researched. Its definately coming from the bottom reset button area, not the flange or anything outside the disposal.
@AdamDIY
@AdamDIY 8 жыл бұрын
I put peels down the disposal all the time. By no means would that ever cause a disposal to leak from the bottom or any other part. It's 100% not your fault. Most likely the disposal is bad and it needs to be replaced. Disposals wear out and need replacing after a while. What's model do you have?

High probability that the Unit was already leaking from the bottom when the last tenants were there and they knew that they would be charged for the repair so they pulled a cheap dirty deed and chose not to report the leaking disposal flood under the kitchen sink and let the next renters take the blame.. dirty.. just dirty.

The sawtooth around the permiter is rust-jacked against the spinning disk. If you trun hard enough, it's bound to break free but the disposal is about done due to rust. Either replace it or replumb your sink to eliminate the disposal.
