Sometimes, when a chip blows, like a SuperIO, it can send far more voltage to CPU vCore than expected and destroy the CPU. We had a MacBook at work with a hole in the charge chip, 20 volts went straight to the CPU and now the board is a paperweight.

Out of curiosity, why do we reball / repaste the chip to get the solder balls instead of using normal solder and making the balls with an iron?
@mecyanned8 ай бұрын
Same question
@SpreadingKnowledgeVlogs8 ай бұрын
Running a iron over the pads with some non leaded solder wouldn't leave behind enough solder for this use case. Dragging an iron with solder on it over pads only leaves a slight coating of solder, here you need a decent amount to bridge the gap between the chip and board especially if you have to account for surfaces not being perfectly flat. It's a very common technique with chips. You also can't just go back and add more solder if there isn't initially enough like you can do with exposed solder joints which are the type you can sometimes typically drag solder with a iron over to create a joint. With exposed joints or bridges if you don't initially have enough solder it's not a big deal as you can always reflow more solder into the joint or bridge as it is exposed but with these being under the chip that's basically impossible to do.

Balls needs to be same proper size
@filips71588 ай бұрын
It's doable, with lots of flux, a knife tip and with solder on it. Just touch every pad ever so slightly. Works 8/10 times. But has two problems : it can happen that the balls be deformed and different size, if you lost flux and forgot to add more. Very little heat is applied so you may have balls which are barely hanging. With some skill it can be doable. And third problem: you have to touch up on every individual pad! That's an enormous amount of work for this.

why dont you put the tape on the pads around the chip that you dont want to fill?
@SpreadingKnowledgeVlogs8 ай бұрын
Your kidding right? You realize how small these parts are right? Even if he could find tape small enough and thin enough it would be so finicky to work with and probably harder then the method he used. The solder won't stick if there's no pads the only worry is it pooling into solder balls next to it.

I have Hp Omen 15 dc gaming laptop 2018 model and after 3 years its gpu GTX 1060 went bad as the laptop screen flashes continuously on and off, so I disabled GPU from device manager and used it for 2 years now the CPU (i7 8750H) is also gone bad as told by local technician. As just 1 week ago GPU properties showed error code 43 and completely dead and now laptop running on cpu shows artifacts, technician says to replace motherboard. So can anyone confirm whether it’s just some short for both CPU and GPU / some VRAM fault/ MOSFET fault or the laptop’s motherboard is completely dead? as motherboard cost quoted by technician is very high. I would replace the motherboard if there is no other option left. so reply is appreciated from northridgefix and all of the viewers.
