I personally see it as the “quiet internet” the real/living part is us, things created by the individual, then there’s the loud internet, ads, bots, algorithms etc etc. There’s still a lot of us but it’s overshadowed by the “machines” but eventually, the dead internet theory will be true and even sadder, once we get far enough most KZbin comments will be bots and eventually all of them

I never update my iPhone. Partially not caring, partially paranoid since Apple was caught slowing old models down purposefully with them. I don't trust apple. We are headed towards the grim reality of AI's allure of granting us Godhood. Eve took from the Tree of Knowledge to become more like God. She took the apple. Semi convinced Steve Jobs was self-aware with this little cute naming. Apple may just be the next Apple. We'll repeat the Original Sin.

I just recently finished an information systems course that was taught by a dude that didn't really understand how the internet works anymore, mainly basing the course on systems that died over a decade ago. It was interesting to hear him explain how the internet and information might "advance" in the future, knowing that he probably wrote his lectures 15 years ago. The net has been cannibalized for the sake of convenience, and I wonder where exactly the logical conclusion to all this ends up.

Totally curated by AI and controled BY the creators of said AI, the highest bidder, and possibly a 1 government. One example of this: I remember when google stole the internet by leveraging ''convenience'' and then using rich snippets to basically make all internet yield information to them. Now the website that used to be frequented to find information in gives the information up for free to google with a chance to be favored in positions, but 99% of the people who use the information get it on Google results on top, without ever even visiting the website where this information is. They give props to google, without giving props to the authors.

I think the internet died when it became mainstream, around the time smartphones became publicly available. Prior to this the internet, computers, and geek culture as a whole was the realm of nerds, who were often looked down upon or at least seen unfavorably. Once everyone, even your grandma, began using the Internet, corporations moved in, bought everything or made replacements for everything, thus monopolizing it, sanitized it, and then monetized it, leading to the "dead" feeling of nowadays internet. I mean 10 years ago I had a ton of forums I used to browse, nowadays all but one are dead, and all those people either moved on or flocked to Reddit.
@reck0n3r

Exactly. And this phenomenon seems to impact all aspects of human life. If we consider when anything becomes mainstream, it seems to die/loses its creative or living aspects. Zombies ruin everything. Movies, video games, music, literature, science, religion, spirituality...pretty much everything. Seems like all those zombie/vampire apocalypse stories were trying to tell us something.

i think you're onto something here! the internet used to be a place you'd have to *go* to (eg "i'm going to turn on the computer and go online"), but because of phones, the internet has become our permanent residence. edited to add: and because of the prevalence of phone-based internet instead of computer-based internet, websites that developed phone apps were able to survive, whereas those that still depended on being a website wasted away because mobile browsing feels bad.

I remember a time when everyone would come home from school, get on Myspace, MSN Messenger, and talk. Now that everyone has smart phones in their pockets that light up when someone messages mean that few people are "on the internet" for long hours like they once were, aside from scrolling tik toks during downtime at work. I've definitely seen the same people in different corners of the internet many times and thought "small world." Sometimes I pop onto Omegle to try to relive the good old days of typing at a computer, but "The Inversion" seems to have definitely occurred there, spamming genuine users with CAPTCHAs while the majority of connections made are bots.

Something happened circa 2009. I was running an activist website as a personal hobby before it received some negative attention freeom savvy, elusive factions. Anyway, I have since given up on the effort as the time and technical commitment became greater than I had patience for. The main takeaway is that during a period of impending crisis, deepening paranoia and chaos with the whole swine flu (2009 H1N1) outbreak, the WHO was on the verge of announcing global pandemic alert level 5. I was covering the play by play on my website. Then *POOF* nothing happened and no one seemed to talk about it ever again. Most people missed it, but exactly the same time a 5000+ force of Mexican Federales were entering Juarez to confront the menacing cartel situation.... That too was never talked about again.... The Google news search algorithms never worked the same again. There seemed to be a massive sterilization effort of the Internet. Things just have never been the same since... 😢😮😢 ... Back in 2004 I was a big posted on gamefaqs PotD, and several offshoots, then I suddenly disappeared. I quit doing it. I realized it was a waste of time, I filled my life with more fulfilling things, and talking to lonely strangers who are all lonely for a reason lost it’s appeal. Then at point 6 “everything is fake except anime” I of course cringed. There is no reason anime would be more real than anything else.

My feeling is that internet is quite empty, especially when it comes to human content. There is more of information, and knowledge. It was still relatively easy to make new friends five years ago. Not anymore. Is it all because the algorithm, I don't know. I feel that people are not so social anymore. They are more demanding, and perfectionist - and this demand can be more easily met by bots, than real human beings, who always have funny noses, hair pointing out in different directions, and perhaps with dubious personal hygiene. The personal hygiene points were already in full swing in social media in 2005 onwards. There was a general feeling that humans are unreliable, and somehow faulty. Maybe algorithms know all this and are merely trying to please the human users, mirror in neutral way, the desired outcome?

I've been using the internet since 2005 and it has changed significantly. I use to be able to find detailed personal websites on how to do things or personal passion projects with loads of good info. Slowly, it changed and now the first few results are advertisements and most are Best or Top 10 "product" of " insert month and year". I never so badly whish websites had a downvote, upvote feedback option. I absolutely hate these results, which almost always link to random Amazon products.

Is kind of a reflection of the real world. Most people will die without doing 'something' with their lives. And from the ones that do, you won't hear about most of them. Out of all the things you do, only a handful of things are actually meaningful to you. At the same time you can't pay attention to absolutely everything that's happening in your surroundings, let alone your city, your house, your country, the world. The 80/20 rule applies in so many contexts. But on the internet, the phrase 'sea of irrelevance' fits perfectly, sadly.

At every stage people had the choice to put in a bit more effort and reject the most the obnoxious forms of this shit, and at every point a majority have chosen the path of least resistance. People want to be able to know nothing, put in as little effort as possible and still have a website, push out KZbin content, be a dev, etc. Geocities and Myspace was too technical for most, Facebook and Twitter made it braindead, while limiting people to pushing polarising opinions because there is no tooling to create unique pages of content.

This was a terrifying video... I'm not sure if it was covered because for long stretched of the video I was in existential crisis from the last segment as it played, but given how much of real world social phenomena, trends and even policy is based on online discourse, the prospect that that discourse is not just automated in a brain-dead sense, but actively corrupt or effectively cancerous, is horrifying.

Okay, here we go; every point made in this 'theory' is more easily explained through known phenomena, so it doesnt pass Occams Razor. This is much better explained through something similar to Urbanization. IRL, we started off with villages, homesteads, and unique comunities, then, as we became more industrialized, we began moving to city centers. This is very similar to how the internet is today. Each large website can be likened to a city-state, and our search engines are essentially highways or other rail-lines. These larger websites have sub-communities, many of which are from whole communities migrating to them at some point in the past. The bots? They are technology; sometimes they are infrastructure, sometimes they are weapons, and sometimes they are that annoying flashing billboard that blinds you while on the road. As for the design similarities, well IRL architecture does this too. Common design archetypes are going to reflect its use. There *are* still small communities still around, forums and personal websites and blogs are *still* a thing. Just, like with rural areas in the real world, they will mainly be trafficked by those who live there. If you have a niche interest or hobby, you will likely find them in these smaller communities, and may take some old-school web serfing to find. For instance; Toki Pona is a constructed language, and a lot of its community congregate around niche forums and personal websites and blogs. People also use forums for posting stories and fanfiction, such as space-battles and sufficient velocity, which are almost sister-sites. Many web serials have their own websites that they post to, and you often find them from random links found on forums. Indie games, often start on forums and personal websites, and then only later wind up on distribution platforms like steam or humble, and many continue to host their websites. Their steam pages will often link to their websites too. I frequently browse the dwarf-fortress forums, for instance. If you want to escape the sameness of the web the solution is simple; leave the crowded cities. There is plenty of life out there, you just have to find it. As for the p*rn, well more people using the internet mean that there will naturally be more of it being made, and in greater veriety. The internet is not dead; you are just living in the mega-cities.

I think "the web" now feels like Minecraft's 2b2t server, where 75% of the players are TAS bots. If you just log on to do casual stuff the way the web intended, you'll be bombarded, overrun, and looted. There is beauty and genuine community out there but you have to search and work hard to find it, play smart and strategic keep it, but sooner or later a bot is gonna find you and destroy your base and community. We've learned that the only way to survive online these days is to live like nomad. It's worth settling down anywhere to and try to grow something that can withstand eternal optimization

This theory makes me think of the Simulated Reality Theory where it both proves and disproves itself. Also, things like this prove to me that people need to be educated what artificial intelligence is and isn't. One example that most people fail to understand and will be surprised if someone tries to argue against this is that A.I. can create original ideas and art. It cannot. A.I. by design requires a basis to generate things and make certain conclusions. Also, making an A.I. mimic human emotions and personalities to pass the Turing Test 100% of the time requires perfect understanding of how emotions are triggered, how emotions can lead to each other, be experienced simultaneously, have different intensities, are not always consistent due to experience, and how emotions affect behavior and decision making.

I feel like the answer is that the internet is, like you said, not exactly dead but hollow. The internet used to be much more lively and active with hundreds, if not, thousands of sites being used and visited but now, depending on the country, you've only got 5-6 websites being widely used. Some a little more, some a little less. It's.. honestly, kind of depressing since a lot of us were around when the internet used to be much more lively, much less corporate and much more fun to be on.

Only 36 718 views right now. The more the internet tries to centralize information, the more lifeless the internet feels. I argue that, in fact, the internet should present people with more diversity, in terms of both information promoted by the algorithms and their owners&creators, and information suggested by the actual users. If the facebook feed only shows us content from 10-20 people after we like enough of their posts, then we will never know what everyone else has to say. That is how echo chambers are formed, and echo-chambers feel lifeless because the people in those echo-chambers act like a hive-mind, pushing a certain narrative using many different ways to phrase it, but the essence of the things said remains the same.

To those who don't see a centralized Internet as an issue... No one should hold total control of Data Flux, or how it is offered, if one party has the monopoly of necessities (real or invented) they hold all the terms of how they solve that necessity (price, quality, etc). That's not good by any way you look at it, since no one but the monopoly gets to establish the terms in everything (from what is and what isn't right or wrong data, to prices, to availability). That's the new tiranny in the disguise of corporations (both online and in real world)
