Hi Johnny, love your content mate. With regards to what’s killed your doitsu purachina, I have lost a couple of my younger fish too in the past in similar scenarios. The truth is it really is a combination of things: 1. Cold weather = natural dip in immune system as you know. 2. Lack of food as a result of the cold = lack of energy to fight off illnesses. 3. = try and limit the water changes to a maximum of 30%, if you needed to fill it back up from losing half I would say split the added water up over 3/4 days just adding 10-15% at a time, it’s tedious but allows them to acclimate to the new water going in better. 4. Chillodenella for example are very active and dangerous at those sorts of temperatures so with regards to FMG treatments it’s always better to follow it up with a 2nd hit around 7 days after the first (I know it says not to on the bottle but the people who make the chemicals for parasites don’t actually keep koi themselves and the instructions regarding doses are always useless) most dealers will tell you the same. 5. When it comes to scraping, if you are struggling the best thing to do is buy a sedative, it seems scary to use if you are not used to them but it couldn’t be any safer and it’s almost impossible to overdose them to the point you kill them. Just get the koi into a bowl filled with water diluted with the sedative, they’ll slow right down and you’ll be able to use a credit card / or even a little scraping tool to get a good amount of mucus on the slide. Once you’ve got it under a microscope spend more time searching than you think you need, often there’s nothing on a slide and then you get to a random corner and find something like 3/4 flukes for example all clumped together so really make sure you explore every corner of the mucus scrape. Some of the best advice I ever got with regards to the koi is just simply leaving the pond for a while, it sounds like you’ve been using a fair few treatments and chemicals etc etc. although the ones you’ve mentioned are all beneficial for certain things, sometimes there’s no better cure than just to leave them and let them recover (unless they are seriously deteriorating infront of you of course) we can all be guilty of stepping in too early to protect our lovely fish. Interesting question regarding the weather, just keep them ticking over on small portions of wheat germ just to give them that energy and here’s to hoping we have a long hot summer 🥹 keep it up mate, nearly time we can sit back and enjoy our ponds without the spring stress 😂

No worries at all mate :) happy to share anything I can from what I’ve learnt. You’re a top bloke and your content is class regardless of what stage people are at in the hobby. The truth is, when it comes to koi keeping, we are all beginners really, there is no simple guide to follow and a million different answers for a million different problems so just keep putting your heart into it and eventually you’ll find what works for you :) regarding the microscope I don’t know if this will be helpful at all but the 10/0.25 (often yellow colour) is definitely the best level of magnification to see the majority of parasites.

You absolutely CAN overdose with sedative if used incorrectly. And you would be sedating any parasites as well which would make spotting the likes of Costia extremely difficult.

Im so dorry you lost one of your fish. That's a huge water change coming right out of winter. I know you had to do it, but i think that was your issue. They are so vulnerable, with little to no immunity, and hungry after their winters slumber. I'm just glad the rest recovered. It's a shame you couldn't have set up a make shift pond to hold and save the water during the repair. That way, you could have pumped it back in when you were done. I'm just glad you saved your beloved Shiro. ❤

Hi Johnny: lot's of good advise on other messages: i also lost fish because of too many and much water changes thinking i was doing right because of issues but after using PH powder every thing went well. Like you: im learning all the time and im not expert . Fish have been flashing a bit :spring time n all that but I've just left well alone as I've listened to a certain KZbinr who likes a more natural approach and puts down the way most pamper their koi : and to be honest i think he's right. Ive got mates with koi but aren't really koi hobbyists: do sod all about anything: other than a filter clean and that's only when they remember and they just seem to have no big problems as such : their koi aren't top draw and they feed poor quality food but they're all still here year after year. I don't know but just saying . Wish us all a happy season and beyond.

Hi Johnny I’ve just came across your channel and browsed through most of your videos. You may have had a lot of bad luck but you’ve learnt a lot in the past 2 years! When doing treatments it can case all good pond bacteria to die/crash. Also when lowering the water level for the leak drying out the top part of the liner also causes the bacteria living on the liner to die and it’s a massive surface area. So can cause water quality issues after doing the above things it would always be good to add beneficial bacteria to the pond! Also when you pond water went down after your holiday I remember thinking the volume of water you was topping up with the 3stage filter looked very high… and thought that it may not be filtering all the chlorine out of the water. That can cause flashing of the fish, Have you tested the water coming out of the filter for chlorine at the volume you run it at? I used to trickle fill my pond with my 3 stage filter so the flow was below the recommended flow rate. Also it would be good to see a general water test on you pond water, and see all results. KH was a major thing for me that I underestimated the importance of. Every time I topped up pond and on a weekly basis I would have to adjust the level as it’s used up by the beneficial bacteria and is a buffer against ph swings. It’s imperative that it’s maintained in the correct parameters as without it ph crashes can happen more and bacteria have no food which causes water quality issues. Bacteria won’t reproduce under 12-13°c so if it dies under those temps there not much opportunity for recovery until it warms up. Can’t say for sure what has caused the fish to die unfortunately it’s part of the hobby until you get everything dialled in, I’d say give it a few months towards end of summer or even next year before adding fish as warmer temperatures should show up if there are any more nastys living in there… koi shops run multiple temperature cycles on freshly imported fish to show up any problems so realistically if it heats up for summer (if we get 1 lol) cools for winter and heats up again next year you’d hopefully have seen issues if there was any, otherwise there is always the possibility of bringing something in with the new fish as you also have no quarantine tank. I’d also take a look at your pipework around your pond to make sure it’s all supported especially on them rubber connectors as you’ve had issues in the past and could prevent the for happening again in the future. Hopefully this give you some more information you find useful and stay positive! And if you do decide to get some fish maybe go for some small tosai, there cheaper, great to watch grow and if the worst happens there not too much money and you can even get a few extra incase and more issues happen in the future and if you end up with too many just sell a few

Love your down to earth honest videos. I’m in the states and I’ve been having a lot of issues in my pond. I lost 10 koi from March 14th to April 16th. I ended up having to heat my pond in January so I could treat/medicate it (still being heated). But, I still lost a few from ich, 2 from a bacterial infection and 4 that died had absolutely no signs of disease. Basically they were fine one day then they just declined for no apparent reason. Scrapes were ok, water was good. It’s a mystery I guess. The various treatments i was doing required a water change before dosing again. So, I was doing daily water changes from January thru February. The koi seemed to tolerate it fine. Otherwise I’d think they would have died during January and February when i had to do the daily water changes.

Hi Johnny love watching your videos, sorry that you have lost a koi. Having gone what you have over the past year or so I wouldn't be in such a rush to introduce new koi. I'm no expert but I would just bring on the koi that you have for twelve months to prove that you don't have any other issues. I have just gone through a similar situation with prolific parasite problems from 2021 to 2022 and then last year serious bacterial issues which I managed to get through without getting rid of all my koi using antibiotics etc. I did loose 40% of my koi over the three years. All this after introducing new fish. My koi now look the best that they have ever done (touch wood) and I don't intend to add any more koi this year. I now treat the pond with Vircon Aquatic every week at 5g per 1000 gallons split twice during the week after back flushing the K1 bead filter. Pond: 5000 gallons, drum filter, K1 micro bead filter, two bottom drains with air dome.

The one thing a lot of us forget is that a pond has its own eco system and by constantly adding chemicals and big water changes,we are upsetting the balance. Vircon is a disinfectant and will put your eco system back a lot. That's why keepers secret worked,it restored some of the eco system and that's the goal. To have a pond that runs without having to add chemicals. I personally only change water that goes to waste from cleaning the filter. Salt baths are also a much safer way to help poorly koi. With scraps, as mentioned, slow and steady is the only way to go and sedate is a must, less stressful for an already stressed koi and leaves it that you can scrape with ease. I always start the scrape just at the Gil plate and slightly under it,pick up Gil fluke that way and get a better scrape by going from there to the back of the koi. One thing to remember is that we only test for a fraction of what's in the water and charcoal is a great tool for filtering out a lot of what we can't see. Lastly, the more filtration the better, nexus plus shower has worked wonders for me and I've had no issues even now after the long winter and one with a spillway would look and sound great on your pond wall. Just an idea to give you the best chance of stabilizing your pond going forward. Best of luck and do scrapes even when not needed just so you are ready for when they are, practice makes perfect

Terry mate I have read this message about 10 times and love it. Thank you so so much. I agree with pretty much everything you say mate and you’re a huge contributor to my growth in knowledge. I know what you mean about virkon. At the minute I will continue to use it. Just as I just want a calm summer. But then the idea is to reduce the use of virkon, gently expose the koi to whatever is hanging around and build their immune system. I know it knocks filters back but I think just for this year it’s what I want to try. An old pond is a good pond, I never had any issue with my little sink one which is strange. Great points on scraping. The charcoal…. I don’t 💯 but would this make seeing the parasites easier? Just all round great mate and I know you won’t agree with my short term direction, but I will be going pretty much exactly as you have mentioned in the future. I’m thinking Bali shower where the blade is, when I have more koi in. I also hope to start garden office this summer. Cheers pal

Feel for you with this mate. Mine have been hiding or on the bottom for the last couple of weeks now with the temps. I've stopped feeding and am looking forward to it warming up next week. My pond temperature today was 8c in the middle of the day. Regards parasites and flicking, unless they are really bad, I just tend to leave them until temps start to get warmer in May. It does usually calm down by itself. Call me old fashioned, but I'm a bit funny about chucking detergents, poisons and chemicals into my pond.

@@koifishjohnny I’m not saying that this is your answer Johnny, but when I was having issues with Koi flashing, I had a good chat with Andy Finch, and he went in to a few things. Main points were, that even for my puddle, he felt I needed more than the small 3 stage to remove all chlorine from the water supply, as its a lot about how much carbon the water will pass through. The main point though, being the flow rates these units suggest they are capable of. They quote for the lowest levels of pollutants being in the water. But the water company’s do not use a consistent quantity of chemicals though, and especially the smaller units capability will be used up in a very short space of time. I am now running a medium sized Big Blue with carbon and then in to a 3-stage like yours that has bone char to remove metals. I also run it at a low 4 to 5 litres per minute when doing a water change to allow maximum retention time in the filter. Andy said even when using the big filters, this should be done, even although some bigger ones will quote much higher flow rate levels. I can only guess that when topping up a pond your size with the small 3 stage, you probably had it running at a good rate, or you would have been there for about a week. So it is just possible that your water is reaching the pond, pretty much still like tap water mate, and therefore, a large water change would not have been great for the pond or filters… Just a thought mate…. 🤔

I have had my koi for 20 yrs in the same pond and never put chemicals in except for the odd years I have had blanket weed.Non heated or covered in winter. No change in water only top up from mains hose when filter is flushed which is not very often.I keep KH around 6-7 and all is well with the fish.

Definitely down to water quality perhaps your cleaning your filter too often or you should go down the water plant's route for filtration 👍

i'm by know means an expert. but one of my koi has been clamped up for about 6 weeks. water parameters perfect, nothing on scrapes, baffled .As a last resort i thought i would add some clay. now he seems a lot better and is swimming about. i wonder if the cold and fluctuating weather has hit this particular koi hard and with the clay clouding the water has just made him feel safer and reduce whatever was stressing him out?. who knows?. seems strange that the same has happened to you.

Mat this is a mega comment. I think exactly the same, the long winter and immune system low. Then clay/ KMA making a positive effect. Glad Im not the only one, cheers pal

Hi Johnny. In all honesty I think alot of you koi blokes are all the same. They are their own worst enemy. You mollycoddle the fish too much. You feed, you water change, you scrape, you add treatments, you cover the pond in winter. Your trying to keep fish in a square box, sterile environment. The result is constant stress and a weakened immune system due to too much human interference. Then when we get unusual conditions as we have now you loose fish.
@koifishjohnny

I honestly think you speak a lot of truth with this. Like Dr Paula said to me a while back they are like kikds buiding their immune system so I agree mate. But with this I think the KMA helped boost them when they needed it

@koifishjohnny mate it's a nightmare I'm guilty of it too but my pool is more natural than the common rectangular raised foemal types. So for me the sterile environment situation is even more difficult to achieve. I love your content and admire your honesty enormously. You shared the tragedy you had will us on what got you into koi in the first place. I felt so upset for you and your poor wife. Not being married or having kids myself it's very alien to me but was very moved by your loss. I admire you both very much. You inspire me to keep going no matter what.

Is the pond water temperature 10 degrees Celsius? If it is at that water temperature, the usual norm is to leave it alone, without disinfecting it or disturbing it in any way. And if that water temperature is not expected to rise, there is nothing you can do. From there, there are a few things you can do as the water temperature changes, but...

@@koifishjohnny yeah thats not too bad at 8.1. If it was around 6.8 to 7. Then you dump too much bicarb in and it goes up to 8.4 8.5 it can affect them. But it's weird that it doesn't always affect all of them

@@bobbyknox9258 Its crazy mate, I think its the weather, I think I should have waited for the temp to increase to fix the leak. Therefore allowing them to eat more, boost their immunity. I think while they were weak I changed things too much and when I added KMA its helped the rest. Just IMO stuff mate but super appreciate your support and guidance on issues like this

Hi Johnny, I’m thinking that maybe the lower temperature could have effected the koi swim bladder. As this organ allows the koi to maintain natural buoyancy in water, that may well be the reason that the koi was lower down in the water and not able to keep up with the other koi in the pond. Using virkon can be an advantage when bad bacteria are present in order to lower the levels, but please remember it doesn’t just kill bad bacteria, but also kills good bacteria as well. An established pond is all about the good bacteria thriving enough to suppress the bad bacteria and when you use virkon, it levels the playing field and this may then provide the perfect opportunity for the bad bacteria to thrive faster than the good bacteria, thus tipping the balance in their favour. Better to allow the pond to do its own thing and I know it’s sometimes difficult to sit on you’re hands, but there really is no better environment for koi, than a stable, well established pond where the good bacteria are thriving. I’d definitely recommend using a type of clay and use sodium Thiosulphate just to keep the chlorine levels down, which in turn will help to reduce the koi’s stress levels and help keep their immune systems working at their best. Just my thoughts. Hope it’s of some use.
