I don't think I'd call it dead. They might get slow sometimes but this mall is pretty well kept, and a decent majority of the businesses here are still open. Have malls declined majorly in the last 10 years? yes, but by 2022 standards, this mall is doing fine

@@natedg78 I never went to that mall and only went to the ones on the Missouri side. I, two cousins and an aunt of ours went to the movie theater across the road from Antioch Mall and watched Ernest Goes to Camp. Also, an uncle of ours lived in Claycomo, which is pretty much down the road from Gladstone. I know the 1980s were far from entirely good, but I believe most of us that were alive back in that decade were better off than we are now. You can't even hang out with anyone most of the time anymore, or go to any social function without them having their nose stuck in their smartphone. I've known IC since the 1970s and it looks fantastic today! If you're going to have a mall, the IC design is a great one to have. Yes, malls are dying everywhere but this one is so well maintained that it seems attractive to retailers and shoppers. For all anyone cares, tear them down but IC looks like a keeper! Thank you for the look around today....I've not been there since the 1990s.

When I lived in independence as a kid, like 4 - 8 years old, my mom and i would sometimes go here and spend a couple of hours at the mall. I remember they had a little train that rode around the upper floor that kids could pay to get on and ride around in. They also had a really smelly petsmart near one of the parking lot exits and i would always hold my nose shut to block the smell until we got outside. If i remember correctly, there was also an indoor childrens playplace thing? Where kids could go to play and burn off energy while parents sat down on the benches (and tables?) Its been almost 10 years since ive been, so i can guarantee that some things have changed since 2010 - 2014.

It's not looking quite dead yet- the property is clearly taken care of, and it's not down to mallwakers dodging falling roof tiles. No mall right now is going at full capacity between COVID, a severely strained economy and the ever-present underpaying of the lower/middle class that fuel malls to begin with.

@@allieraquelYT Hillcrest Road near the Cerner Innovative Campus. That area was solid middle class up until the 1990s. As the OP stated, section 8 started spilling in, along with inner city bussing to the mall. My family lived in South KC until they decided to buy a property at Raintree Lake. My father is a liberal. His politics were responsible for the downfall of South Kansas City. He votes blue which destabilizes his own neighborhood and then he moves to a safer neighborhood, bringing his politics with him. It's like a virus. The host dies and the virus moves to a different one. We see it happening in California and NYC. A mass exodus due to liberal policies. Unfortunately they bring their politics with them to the red states.

Went there in early fall 2018 and things didn’t seem so bad. However based on somewhat recent research, it seemed even then, that property was already going through the similar crime/violence/reputation issues that the former Bannister Mall and even St. Louis’s former Northwest Plaza went through in the 90s & early 2000s… Reputation & perception aside, if/when someone gets shot INSIDE of the mall, at bare minimum, they could likely forget about EVER getting that place fully leased ever again, to put it lightly…

There was definitely a shooting in the mall a few years ago, I want to say it was either right before or right after the mall switched ownership. I keep thinking it happened over on the Sears side, but don't quote me on that. That was the first (and only) time I can remember that happening there. Now, Bannister Mall? Different story. The only way to save this mall is to remodel it and turn it into a luxury mall. This mall is surrounded by high income and there’s literally no luxury stores that’s the only way to turn that area around. Right now it just appeals to the hood because it’s full of shoe stores and jewelry stores.
