This place was my childhood. Before Annapolis Mall became the hangout for people in the mid 2000s, this is where people would go. I still remember the KB toys with the mat in front of it that was interactive, the Sbarro was the first place i ever tried pizza in my life (and it still looks exactly the same today!). Also Marley station mall used to have this little Hallmark like store (they had a hallmark at one point but it wasn’t a hallmark?) which was the only place in the area that sold Webkinz in 2006 at the height of popularity. Everyone in my elementary school would go there and spend our allowances on Webkinz (I was from Severna park) I also remember there was a Kohr Brothers Ice cream right above the children’s play area, and also an A&W hot dog shop next to the play area. I would always get the corn dog nuggets!! So good. And in the food court there was a Taco Bell, and my personal favorite, Boardwalk Fries 💖 it also had the first chick fil a in the area, which is still there btw! And there was a Disney store up near the part of the mall with the blue carpet and the cool metal elevator. Marley Station was my early childhood. Too bad I missed out on the friendlys tho! (I’m 22 for reference, I went here when I was about 3-7 years old!)

I remember when it opened, I was in elementary school then, & it was all the rage. Not surprised that it's dying out though, because they hiked rent up way too high. I still remember Jumpers Hole Mall, Glen Burnie Mall, and the mall that they had in Severna Park, which is long gone. I grew up in Glen Burnie, so I remember a lot of it. I was bummed when Harundale Mall went under, but I wasn't surprised. Once Marley Station came in, Harundale started going under. My friends and I used to hang out at Marley Station in the mid to late 90s, but we all got run off. I miss those days.

A few extra facts: the mall has two sculptures: "WiSH" by William Crutchfield, who had other sculpts currently at two other Taubman malls (Westfarms, Short Hills Mall, formerly Beverly Center) and the twisty "Bias Warp" by Ted Jonsson near Macy's. The trashcans are original relics from the opening and were featured at other Taubman malls. It's also one of the only former Taubman malls with no fountain, ever. Been here twice myself, it's a special place!
@VGHSyntheticOrchestra
@VGHSyntheticOrchestra 3 жыл бұрын
It actually did have a fountain ages ago. Someone has a home video posted of some Christmas from the 80s at Marley Station and it was at this mall. The fountain was where the WiSH sculpture is, right below in in that awkward sitting/walkthorugh valley.

Excellent video, and THIS is how malls should look: light, color, different decor, the NEON (The NEON can still work today. Can be part nostalga from the 80s/90s and part because it brings some life to malls.) Simon malls are three tone dark color, bland, little light. Simon knows how to manage malls and get people in. I rather go for a mall like Marley Station because it has LIFE! Marley can survive if they can get other anchors like Kohls (there's one in my mall that's very successful,) PriMark (Irish Department Store,) Nordstrom Rack (or the main Nordstrom,) Any of the Marshalls/Home Goods brands. And I like it has a funky looking movie theatre and video arcade. Maybe even put in a good restaurant or two in the vacant Boscovs space (I suspect with the big closings they will scoop up a few spaces for its store.) Only complaint, and it's directed at ME, is I miss the live viewings because I"m working :(

So many fond memories of this mall, I used to love it and the movie theatre there. Now that I think about it, I don't think I've been inside in like 15 years. I just found out Laurel Mall was demolished in 2012 (I've been living under a rock for the last decade) so I'm glad Marley Station is still up for now. I pretty much only go to Columbia Mall and Arundel Mills nowadays.

I have been working on a short film that takes place in a mall. It has a 90's kind of nostalgia/horror vibe. I am building the mall in 3D and using a green screen studio. I'm not sure where I'm going with it, but I have been binging your playlist for the last two weeks and it continues to inspire me. Thank you for doing the work you do!

My grandparents would bring us to this mall when I was a kid. My mom and dad did also. When my mom and dad got divorced, on the weekend, my dad would bring my brother and I here to see a movie. That was the late 90s early 2000. I remember it like it was yesterday. The mall was so packed with people. There would be lines coming out of the restaurants with an hour wait time. All the tables would be full on the outside. Movies would be sold out. Wow, how things change. This was always the mall on my mind when I was a teen. I remember in 7th grade, sitting there and seeing this mall in my mind and wondering what was happening in it at that time. The Chinese food place is still there. JCPenny, Macys and maybe that is all. The theater is, but they redid all that. My mom told me that my aunt tagged her to something on Facebook. Upon looking, this mall is up for auction again. Who knows if it will remain or not? It seems a bunch of places like this are going up for auction. I still like JCPenny. They have cool kitchen stuff. The cloths are for young kids mostly. I am 35. haha I love the book store in the mall and the Chinese place. But, what else does the place have? Most stores now are closed when you go in. I think, they have places trying to sell perfume in the walkway. Cell phone stores, shoe stores and that is pretty much it. This is one of the places that i can look at now and see what time can do. You know what I mean? Other malls have way more people. But, still, they have the same stores after so many. It's like being on the boardwalk in Ocean City. If the mall closes, it will really be a shame. So many people will loose their jobs.

I grew up literally directly across the street from this mall and still love it til this day! I used to walk over in the summertime everyday to hit the arcade that was huge back then. Also in our Middle School years this is where kids from everywhere would go on Friday and Saturday nights to just walk in circles trying to look as cool as possible or literally just drive laps around the mall entrances, with neons on and bass and blaring out the trunk. There was a time when this mall was everything. I've fought in that mall. I had sex in that mall. Lmao, good times! It's downfall was when they built and opened a MUCH bigger and modern mall called Arundel Mills like 15 miles away. I still always choose Marley when I need some shoes or sumn and will continue to until she's completely gone.

I grew up in Glen Burnie and one of the biggest hits to the place was Arundel Mills Mall. Plus the Mall in Glen Burnie had always been slight competition but they are about tanked. I remember going to see my girlfriend at the Hot Topic there all the time and hanging out there when I was a teenager. Now when I visit Glen Burnie and go back to this mall once or twice a year, it's pretty empty. Lots of foreign stores and cheap knock offs. Sad to see what's it's become.

Most Taubman Center developed malls seem to have very similar asthetics and architecture. I live a few miles from one, Twelve Oaks in Novi, MI and it has a very simiar feel. The only major differences are that Twelve Oaks doesn't have nearly as much neon and seems to be both much larger and much busier in business.

BoratWanksta I think I have only been to Fairlane once before. Taubman sold that property, didn't they? They do still own Twelve Oaks and it seems to be doing very well for them. Seeing all the dead malls, the amount of traffic that Twelve Oaks gets surprizes me.

Yeah, one of the "big" malls in my area has had a stretch of bad luck; the Macy's closed down(a few years after its former life as a Daytons, The the Herbergers which just moved into the space(after leaving it tiny mid mall location) Closes as well(what was the point?), and now the Sears is going(going, Gone(soon)). The people who were holding up the "Going out of Business" along the nearby roads switched from Herbergers to Sears(at least there is 'some' economic gain(?)). Previously this mall has lost RadioShack(was working in the mall across from ol'Tandy) and can't seem to fill out its Foodcourt(a 'recent' addition and it's even lost Rocky Rococos) with Chicken Now and Nosh failing totally. Even long time "original" retailer DEB closed a while back. The Hallmark Store couldn't stay afloat either. Valley View is pretty still soldiering on though.

What is going to save this mall is that its 30 years old, but yet the interior is in no need for a refresh. Luck was on their side where the design and decor chosen has both passed the test of time, and is on its way back. So.... No huge debt and loans necessary in their future. Get some marble and tile polishing machines, And that public area will be better than new. How about a chuck e cheese, an escape room, and a pool hall and billards

I live in the area as well. It's sad to see the mall struggling like this the Boscov wing has nothing left or soon to be nothing left there as the Dollar Ocean is closing at the far end. I'm surprised they survived as long as they did. There's no retail to fill these big anchor areas. The malls need to be re-imagine. Sure you have some of your core smaller stores, mom and pop shops. However once these anchor's goes, nobody will be coming to this place. The idea of the mall was to be a social hang out and a place to shop. Online shopping has taken that away and so has social media. So why not bring people back with stuff that they can't do at home. Put in a laser tag and some indoor entertainment. Move the theater to the empty boscov's and do a big two story theater and rival Arundel Mills for a place to come to. People still love going to see movies. With the theater out of the food court wing, then you could bring in more places to eat. Pokemon, Yugi-Oh, and Magic the Gathering is still huge and have daily tournaments bring in a card shop like MTG first and have them come to the mall so that way they have a huge place to hold the events. This will bring daily traffic and allow the food court to grow and add more food options. Plus while there people may go out and shop at stores like Hot Topic, Spencers, or GameStop since they are already in the mall. The key thing is getting people out of the house and by offering entertainment and a mix of stores to shop at then the malls have a chance.

If I lived in Glen Burnie, I would definitely be hangin out at Marley Station Mall, it has a gorgeous futuristic aesthetic and neon, in fact it looks similar to current japanese malls. The "anchor" stores have nothing to do with it. Arundel Mills killed Marley, and I hate it. I live 5 minutes from Marley and my first job was 30 years ago as an usher in the movie theater. Good times.
