Those stainless steel kitchen facilities are extremely expensive, very durable and able to be fully disinfected, making them ideal for reuse. I am afraid that people will take one look at them in a disgusting state and think that they are ruined when they are not. In fact they can be reused in animal breeding facilities and chemical labs not even involving food consumption.

the Granite Run Mall was a very hip place in the 70s and 80s but was in decline long before the 2000s. The KOP mall expanded and improved in the 80s and 90s... but the killing blow was the opening of the Blue Rt in the early '90s which made the KOP mall much easier to get to. It would take an hour or more from my house in Delaware County during the holidays to KOP - with the Blue Rt it takes about 15-20 minutes. The only thing keeping it alive for the last 20 years was Sears. I went to that Sears in 2001 to buy appliances and was shocked that it was 50% empty and the stores it did have were really bad, almost like a flea market, and that was 15 years before it closed.

Just finding out that this mall will be used for filming in the Kevin Smith flick "Mallbrats" (or "Mallrats 2" - known by both titles at present), the sequel to his 1995 flick "Mallrats". Apparently, Smith was supposed to be in pre-production of "Clerks 3" by now, but it's been shelved until 2016 in favor of "Mallbrats" due to this mall's impending demolition.

It's so weird to see that both escalators were running in center court...at any given time when I worked or shopped there one of them would be out of order. It was nice to see this, brought back so many great memories being in that mall....its completely changed w the exception of boscov's and sears still there. Thanks for documenting this mall.

I owned this shit in the 90s fyi. That is my childhood and adolescence right there. I now work at the hospital across the street and see the rubble and construction of whatever they're putting in there now. Sad.

Demolition is well underway. There's a big hole where the Ruby Tuesday used to be and that's for getting equipment in and out and removing large items. Boscov's mall doors have been walled over but Sears just has grates and tarps. The Sears is full of bangs and booms as the mall is slowly dismantled.

The ironic part about this mall is that it wasn't actually "dead" when the owners decided to demolish it (it was doing quite well financially), they purposely killed it so they could build the awful shopping center and apartment buildings that have replaced it. The new shopping center opened 5 years ago and is still more than half empty. I knew the woman who ran most of the kiosks in the mall and she said they flat out refused to renew her lease even though business was great and the mall was still lively and packed with shoppers. There was a deal in place to shoot Mallrats 2 there which fell through because the owners didn't want to push back development a few months. That being said, this was MY mall growing up. It was the place everyone in the area shopped. It was the place to meet up with kids from other schools before cell phones and social media. Practically every teenager I knew worked there at one point. I met my wife there, and lament the fact that the literal spot we met is now the back room of a store I can't access. I was also angry that they ended up closing it about a month before they were saying they would, so I never got to get my proper farewell.

Yep, same here, this mall was my childhood. The shopping center there now sucks. It was advertised as This big, beautiful, area where people can walk around and go to stores, it’s literally just a big open area with huge stores and parking.

I grew up going to this mall. Worked at the Babbages next to the Bains deli, then a couple more places. Literally watched the mall die from the inside and it was both surreal and very sad.

@@Rompler_Rocco: Sears Holdings Corp owns the footprint of many their stores, open or closed. Suburban Mall in Upper Darby is a prime example. When a major developer desired to renovate the property, Sears HC leveraged their anchor store position to gain advantageous terms, solely benefitting ESL Investment, the primary stakeholder in Sears. The building was reopened as a multi tenant facility. Transform Holdco, Sears newest owner, is determined to maximize real estate values on all properties, dead or alive. Eddie Lambert has consistently found a way to profit from zombie properties.

I remember Black Friday Christmas shopping at this mall in 1985, the place was a mad house with a sea of humanity, my wife and I still talk about how walking around this mall was like playing football, plus there was no place to park. It's amazing how bad management and changing times have an dramatic effect on things. Glad it was torn down and not just left to rot in the community.

It's so true! Honestly the greed, hubris and only looking out for number one is a big reason we're seeing this massive economic collapse in the first place - we should help each other and turn things around as much as possible.
@ruffus9108 жыл бұрын
Danny Poole This was tried with a mall near my parents property in Texas. The homeless ended up slowly tearing apart the mall for scrap until it began crumbling and had to be condemned. I understand you have a desire to see the better nature in everyone, but that's not reality. Nobody is going to pay for the upkeep of these massive structures to house homeless people, especially when theyd end up slowly tearing it apart.

Danny Poole you do realize you can't just "turn" a mall into a homeless shelter. Someone still owns the place. They'd have to sell it to someone who will make it a homeless shelter. And no one can afford to pay for a mall (cost millions) to turn it into a homeless shelter (zero profit, typically charity or gov run). This isn't how the world works, kid.

Danny Poole would never happen around here. it's a pretty nice area and people would flip if they allowed that to happen, sorry but it's the truth

I worked at Hamilton Luggage, bottom level near Gimbels/Boscovs, in high school and summers during college-1984-1986. Would walk the mall, visiting my friends at the other stores on my breaks! They certainly built that place to last, the floor tiles haven’t chipped or aged a bit! 😀

Meals at Farrell's, Der Dog Haus, Rustler, or Roy Rogers...shopping for books at Waldenbooks (1st floor) or B. Dalton (2nd floor)...albums at Listening Booth or (even better) Record Bar...snacking at Karmelkorn, Bavarian Pretzel, Baskin-Robbins, Orange Julius, or (in the early days) the Hansel & Gretel bakery. The fountains, the greenery, the bridge that crossed over the fountain down by Gimbels, that sunken theater area in the middle of the mall. To this day, I miss the glory days of the Granite Run Mall.
