I had to sit in the entrance foyer of B &Q (in England) in the mid 80s to get people's attention for the double glazing small firm I worked for - basically just used to do that and on other girl but lets say I never pushed it as not my style and hated it but was a bit of money but felt really awkward due to not being part of B&Q really! Suppose you do anything at 19!! 😬😝

I used to go to that mall with my grandparents before my mom moved us across the country. Last time I was there had to be 2006, I think, but I remember going to the Friendly's outside Boscov's with my family and my best friend. Years before, my aunt bought me this neat little version of Milo's journal from the Disney movie Atlantis from what used to be a Walden Books. I remember eating in the food court with my grandpa every other week, and my grandma shopping for Christmas presents at that Boscov's when Plymouth Meeting's was too packed. Since then, all those people are long gone, so I never went back - probably out of the fear for to crushing reality of time passing. The whole 'if I don't see it, it gets to stay as it was, willful ignorance' thing. It was a crappy little mall - and the old people mall, especially when King of Prussia was like an hour or so away, but it's still good to see after all this time. Thanks.
@kingjoe1394 Жыл бұрын
I remember that place, too. I worked in a couple of retail stores there, 1982- 1985. I also moved across the country, and have not been back for many years. The mall always had, to me, an empty, ephemeral feeling, an air of impermanence. And I'm not sure that the mall was ever financially robust; I'm surprised it hung on for as long as it did. I doubt I'll ever be back that way again, but its good to see the place one last time. It is depressing, though. If Sartre were alive today he'd say, "This is what I'm talking about."

I’m amazed that this place is still open, over 6 years after this video was made. As dead as it looks here, it must have almost NO stores remaining. I’m surprised that Amazon hasn’t swooped down and snatched this property up. All they would need to do is bulldoze it and build their center, just like what they’ve done with how many other dead malls.

Hi Dan, really fantastic series. I'm not from Pottstown but had a lot of friends in that area. Spent many Sundays there. My kids hanging out with our friend's kids. I agree with you on the decor, it was bad in the early 2000s. The corridor at the opposite end of Sears appeared like they just decided to stop construction and put up a wall. They had exits there but something was just not right aesthetically. The one store you questioned what it was, I believe it was a candy and maybe an cream store too.

These dead malls are sad to look at. I remember them back in the 80's when they were full of life and music and colors. The malls were our social media: we met up with friends, met new friends (more than a few marriages came from people meeting at the mall), and my favorite of all: people watching. I miss the vibe. Everything today is drab. Stores and restaurants are all earth tone browns and beiges- usually without any defining uniqueness. Even McDonald's is this coffee shop drab with nothing interesting about it anymore.
@zenithperigee74422 жыл бұрын
@Red Scorpion 6, "people watching", makes me think of "bird watching", lol... It is sad missing out on many things we enjoyed as kids. We used to always go to the local mall on the weekends as a family and sometimes we might go during the week and catch a movie or go shopping. Of course us kids always liked to head straight for the game arcade! Still it was nice seeing some of the car events where cars were inside the building sometimes on turntables. They also had the skating rink which was nice. You could either go out and skate or simply watch others skating and sometimes falling lol, all whilst having some good ole Chick-fil-A as the restaurant was right there and they often had an employee coming out to offer free nugget samples on little toothpicks! I can say, somehow back then those were actually better than nuggets at the local restaurant. Anyway, sometimes the skating rink would be closed temporarily whilst they brought out the Zamboni! Of course there were other snacks nearby. I remember the various peanuts, redskins, cashews, almonds etc., under the heat lamps for a warm snack. Then just beyond it was the "cookie factory" where they had rotating trays in a window displaying chocolate chip and other types of cookies from around 6+ inches in diameter! They were so chewy and melty, lol. Then you had the various dept., stores, Sears/Montgomery Ward, JC Penny etc. Eventually the nearby textile mills had been shut down mostly with only one operating at about half capacity for yrs then it was shut down. All for cheap labor in Mexico. Then after that shut down, Walmart was beginning to pop up and suddenly the mall started seeing businesses close and eventually the mall. The police dept., briefly took up some space there until it was sold, destroyed and of course a Walmart put up in it's place. Sad to see the mall which was more exciting with a variety of businesses/activities being replaced by a single store that is NOT "always lowest prices!!!" which keeps at least 5 related billionaires still living it up whilst dozens of other businesses closed their doors...
@tjsogmc2 жыл бұрын
@@zenithperigee7442 Thanks for sharing your memories. Apparently we had the same kind of teen years :) I miss hanging out with my friends at the mall. Seeing movies, eating pizza, playing in the arcade or mini-golf. And there was always something going on- like you say a car show, or a concert or art display. Always something happening. I miss the hair styles, the clothing and the colors of the 80's. I really do.

One of my favorite mall stories is my Mom and I went to JC penny at Arrowhead mall in Arizona. We went to the furniture section and looked around and as we were about to leave I noticed they had an oculus rift. They had it set up so you could visualize how the furniture would look in whatever space you have. We both got to experience VR for the first time this was in 2017 maybe. I barley go to any malls anymore, I forgot they had such a vibe

Stopped at an outdoor mall twice in past years. Got there 10 minutes before normal 10 AM store openings. I am retired and have bad feet & knees but have a handicap sign to park in handing cap spots. Both times every parking spot nearest the stores were filled with workers cars. I intended to spend at least $500 on clothes at my twice a year clothes shopping. Waited out in the cold for 20 minutes but nobody showed up to open the store that always has at least 3 workers. Will never return to that location.
